Design

The Gigabyte GV-N960G1 Gaming-2GD (N960G1 Gaming) is based on the new GM206 graphics core and is overclocked to a GPU clocked at higher clock speeds than the standard Nvidia announced. Specifically, the default clock speed of the GPU is 1.241 MHz and can accelerate to 1,304 MHz in GPU Boost mode. The card is also equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory with 1.752 MHz clock and 128-bit memory interface.

The WindForce 3x cooling system incorporates a Triangle Cool technology incorporating three 80mm cooling fans and large copper heatpipes that directly touch the GPU surface, not only to increase heat dissipation efficiency, Noise generated but also supports better overclocking due to lower GPU temperature than standard heat sink.

In addition, the N960G1 Gaming is equipped with Ultra Durable VGA technology, similar technology that the company applied on motherboard products.

According to Gigabyte, the application of Ultra Durable technology lowers card temperatures, saving power consumption while delivering up to 30% better overclocking than previous generations.

The card also supports 4-monitor video output to display 4K super-resolution images for gaming, movie playback, or multi-tasking applications. Unlike the older generation, the Gigabyte GTX 960 offers up to three DisplayPort ports that produce standard 4K resolution video signals without the need for a conversion cable when used.

The N960G1 Gaming requires two 8-pin and 6-pin 12V PCIe power lines with a capacity of 10A (equivalent to 120W) and a power supply of 400W or more to meet system requirements.

The Gigabyte GTX 960 uses the new GM206 graphics core, which is half the specifications of the GV-N980G1 Gaming-4GD (GM204). Still, in terms of performance, this midrange card still has the ability to process Full HD video at up to 60 fps, twice as high as the “standard” 30 fps of the popurlar card line.

Specifically, the Maxwell GM206 graphics core has a total of 1,024 CUDA cores divided into eight Streaming Multiprocessor (SMM), GPU texture mapping unit (TMU) 64 and 32 processors ROP (Raster Operation Unit). The N960G1 Gaming also features 2GB of GDDR5 memory, a clock speed of 1,752 MHz with a 128-bit memory bandwidth.

As mentioned above, the N960G1 Gaming design is based on the second-generation Maxwell GPU architecture, which implicitly inherits some noteworthy features such as the shadows and light path processing features of Voxel Global Illumination ( VXGI) helps images interact with light to show more realistic, images in-game will be brighter and sharper.

The Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) feature enables the GPU to output 4K video signals on Full HD screen resolution by filtering and enhancing pixel quality. DSR will be rendered in high resolution, in greater detail, and will automatically adjust to match the screen resolution of the output signal.

Performance

For performance evaluation, Test Lab uses a Haswell base configuration test with the GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 motherboard, Intel Core i7-4770K processor, 240GB SS Corsair Force GS and Windows 7 operating system sp1.

In addition to the overall performance benchmarking tools 3DMark 11 and Heaven DX11 Benchmark 4.0, Test Lab also uses a number of games to test the game’s ability to battle the system at a resolution of 1,280×720 pixels (HD 720p) and 1,920×1,080 pixels (Full HD) like Alien Vs Predator, Tom Raider and especially Resident Evil require higher card processing power.

Specifically in the evaluation of multi-threaded graphics processing 3DMark Fire Strike, the trial configuration reached 6,718 overall points and graphics alone reached 7,667 points. Similarly, the Cloud Gate test scored 23,650 points overall, Graphic being 50,788 points.

With the Heaven Benchmark, the graphics test has many similarities with 3DMark but emphasizes Tessellation, GV-N960G1 Gaming-2GD technology achieving 808 points and rendering capabilities at 32.1 fps at resolution. 1,920×1,080 pixel resolution with Extreme graphics setup.

For test games, the GV-N960G1 Gaming-2GD still demonstrates its power through the number of processing frames and no lag occurring during testing.

Temperature, power consumption

Test the graphics card thermal capabilities and test configuration power consumption (not including the monitor) through 3DMark 11 graphics tests, temperature and system capacity recorded through GPU-z software and Logger Lite in the environment about 28 degrees C.

In idling mode, the GPU temperature fluctuates at 41 degrees Celsius, the power consumption of the test configuration is 54.7 W, calculated on the average. In 3DMark graphics tests and gaming, the use of the unique WindForce 3x heatsink helps keep the system running smoothly and efficiently. Specifically, GPU temperatures fluctuate around 65 degrees Celsius, about 5 degrees C lower than GV-N970WF3OC-4GD in the same test and 211.4W system power.
