Overview
The Sony DSC-HX7V is a pocket compact with a 10x zoom. It’s a point-and-shoot for people who want more reach than a phone gives them, without carrying anything big. There’s no viewfinder, so you frame every shot on the rear screen.
Sensor and Lens
The sensor is a 16.2-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS, paired with Sony’s BIONZ processor. The back-illuminated design helps in dim light, and photos come out sharp with accurate color in normal conditions.
The lens is a 10x optical zoom covering 25 to 250mm (35mm equivalent). That’s wide enough for a room or a landscape and long enough for a stage or a distant building. Optical SteadyShot helps reduce blur from shake, most noticeably at the long end and indoors.
Screen
The 3.0-inch screen has about 921,000 dots, which is sharp and bright for a camera of this size. It also shows the menus and shooting information. Without a viewfinder, you’ll find it hard to see in bright sun.
Shooting
Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto: the camera reads the scene and picks the settings. Superior Auto combines several frames in tricky light for a cleaner result.
Scene modes: portrait, landscape, night scene, sports and others.
Sweep Panorama: sweep the camera across a scene and it stitches the frames into one wide image.
3D mode: takes 3D stills that you can view on a compatible 3D TV.
Face detection and Smile Shutter: the camera fires automatically when it sees a smile.
Image Quality and Speed
Photos are clean up to about ISO 800. Above that, noise becomes noticeable, though noise reduction keeps the results acceptable for casual use. Autofocus is quick, and the burst mode is fast enough for spontaneous shots, though I wouldn’t count on it for sports.
Video
The camera records 1080 video at 60i, and there’s a dedicated movie button for starting a clip quickly. Detail is good, and the stereo microphone captures clear audio, though it picks up ambient noise. There’s no manual exposure control and no external microphone input, so it isn’t a camera for serious video work.
Connectivity and Battery
An HDMI port lets you show pictures and video on a TV. The battery is rated at about 300 shots per charge, which covers a day of ordinary use. Carry a spare if you’re traveling or filming a lot.
Strengths
Small body with a 10x zoom
Back-illuminated sensor that helps in dim light
Effective image stabilization
Simple menus and controls
Weaknesses
No viewfinder, and a screen that’s hard to see in bright light
Noise above ISO 800
Basic video features, with no manual control or microphone input
Verdict
The HX7V is a good pocket camera for travel and everyday snapshots. It zooms much further than a phone can, it works well in dim rooms for its size, and it’s easy to use. It isn’t the right choice for serious video, and you’ll struggle with the screen in strong sun. If you want a simple camera with plenty of reach, it does that job.
