Apple Music Lossless Overview
Apple Music currently uses AAC files. Thanks to its better features, this format has become an alternative to the old mp3 format. However, this is still a lossy format, also known as compressed music files that do not preserve data, so compared to lossless or hi-res files, the amount of information in the song in this format is lost a lot. Apple has decided to upgrade its service quality to Lossless will certainly bring a better experience.
What is Lossless?
Lossless (CD quality) has two types, including Uncompressed (Wav and AIFF) and Compressed (Flac, APE, ALAC formats). Uncompressed files will usually have a larger capacity than Compressed files, so they are less common. Normally, lossless files will be 5-6 times larger than lossy files, so streaming and storing music files of this type will consume more resources.
What is Hi-Res?
Hi-res is a concept to refer to music files with higher quality than CD quality (16bit/44.1kHz). The familiar formats that we often encounter are WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, and DSD. There are two concepts that we often encounter: Hi-res Music and Hi-Res Audio. The logo on the right was created by the association of Japanese brands (led by Sony) in 2013. The logo on the left is created by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and several organizations. Other organizations such as CEA, DEG, and Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing launched in 2014 to set the standard for high-resolution music (aka hi-res music).
Other record labels and music publishers adopt this logo within the US, Canada, and Europe. Related services include music downloads and streaming of both singles and albums. Thus, the RIAA has established the Hi-Res Music standard to compete with the Hi-Res Audio standard. The Hi-Res Music standard is easier to calculate because it requires music to reach 20bit-48kHz or more. Hi-Res Audio inherently requires 24bit/96kHz or higher. However, both of these standards are already higher than the 16bit/44.1kHz level of CDs.
Apple Music Lossless Format
Apple Music Lossless will use the ALAC format with quality from 16bit -44kHz to 24-bit -192kHz. In essence, this is a Hi-res file. To experience this music quality, especially on phones, you will need to invest in more DAC/Amp to experience it fully.
