The AirTag 2 and AirTag 1 models maintain their original design elements but still possess identifiable differences between their two versions. The design of AirTag 2 maintains its original design from the previous model according to my observations of its visual elements. The two products share compact dimensions which they package in a combination of glossy plastic and premium metal materials. I can use my existing keychains and accessories from the first generation because this feature allows me to reuse all my previous purchases.

The two items showed one special feature which I discovered through their direct comparison because their letters appear on their shiny finishes. AirTag 2 displays all its characters in uppercase letters. The first version of Apple used lowercase and uppercase letters for their product name selection.

Testing Precision Finding

I tested the AirTag 2 upgrades by using the system inside AirTag 2 at the company basement for my academic research. The area contains multiple obstacles which create difficulties for normal signal reception because of its enclosed nature. The first-generation AirTag connected to my iPhone 17 Pro Max while I connected my iPhone 17 to the AirTag 2.

I tested the range of the devices by placing them inside a secured backpack which I left in a parking garage corner before walking backward to the gate. The actual results showed that AirTag 1 lost its tracking ability at 20 meters because it could no longer detect signals from the nearby area. The new Ultra Wideband 2 chip enables AirTag 2 to track movements while providing precise directional information to users.

The search range has been expanded by 50% according to Apple’s specifications which lets me locate objects and my motorbike more easily in expansive parking garages.

Real-world location and search experience with Apple Watch

In the second test, I asked a friend to hold both devices and run around the playground and small alleys near the company. The searching process began after ten minutes because the devices remained stationary.

My phone map showed both AirTags to be located in the adjacent alley with high location accuracy. AirTag 2 achieved faster signal acquisition while maintaining a strong connection from a distance when I activated the directional feature.

The AirTag 2 upgrade enables users to find their belongings through direct tracking on Apple Watch Series 9 or later models and Apple Watch Ultra 2. The experience of using the watch to locate items proved to be outstanding according to my personal experience. The watch required extra time for signal detection compared to the phone yet I could view directional information through my wrist device which allowed me to maintain hand freedom without needing to carry the large iPhone. The first-generation AirTag did not provide this function.

Speaker Volume and Resonance Assessment

According to Apple the current speaker volume exceeds the previous level by 50%. I conducted verification testing by using two devices which I placed under pillows to test resonance at both 5m and 10m distances while I measured sound levels with a specialized noise meter.

The actual volume difference between the two measurements seems to me to be smaller than the 50% measurement which I estimate only to show a 20% difference. Apple increased the treble range which made the ringtone sound louder and clearer. The AirTag 2 produces sounds which I can use to locate keys that became stuck deep in sofa cushions and to track my wallet which got mixed with other belongings.

The AirTag 2 provides users with a major advantage because of its perfect compatibility with all Apple devices. The device can still send its location to you through the Find My network which uses nearby Apple devices even when you are outside the phone’s Bluetooth range.

I also appreciate the feature of temporarily sharing the location of items. SITA reported that their location sharing system has helped airlines achieve baggage delay reductions which reach 26%. Apple protects your location data by implementing advanced security systems that include end-to-end encryption and tracking alert systems which prevent unauthorized access to your location information.

I discovered through real-world testing that AirTag 2 represents a valuable upgrade which I have been looking forward to since the first announcement. The single tag costs $35 while the pack of four tags costs about $115 which shows that the current price matches the first generation cost but the Apple Watch now supports longer connection distance and better search abilities.
