With an unrivaled user experience, great apps, and potentially life-saving health and fitness features, the Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch you can buy.

Series 6 (starts at $399), Apple builds on its flagship smartwatch with the addition of a blood oxygen saturation sensor that calculates your SpO2 levels on demand and records measurements periodically measure the background when you are sleeping and inactive. This technology to consumer wearables has never been more important than during the global COVID-19 pandemic. It shows how your circulatory and respiratory systems deliver oxygenated blood to your body. How good your body is and can help you gauge whether you need to go to the hospital. Plus, Apple’s changes include a faster processor, an always-on altimeter that lets you go. See your elevation in real-time, and the screen brightness increases when your wrist is bent. These enhancements, plus many new additions in watchOS 7, including a 20-second hand wash timer and sleep tracking capabilities, make the Apple Watch Series 6 the company’s best smartwatch.

Valuation

Apple introduced two new smartwatches this year — the flagship Series 6 and the more affordable Watch SE. The Series 6 starts at $399 for the GPS-only model and over $100 for the GPS and cellular versions.
The Watch SE shares design elements with the Series 6 and key health and safety features like fall detection, start at $279 for the GPS-only model or $329 for the GPS and cellular version motion. It lacks an always-on display, as well as blood oxygen saturation and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings — we go into detail about the differences between the two here.

The GPS-only Series 3 is still on sale for just $199 as another budget-friendly option. All models require an iPhone to be paired, so Android users are out of luck.
The Series 6 comes in 40mm and 44mm case sizes and three different materials: 100% recycled aluminum, polished stainless steel, or brushed titanium. Apple is also giving you some new jewelry colors to choose from this year.

WatchOS 7 includes several new watch faces, including this one, called Artist, which features a dynamic portrait created in collaboration with artist Geoff McFetridge.
Series 6 aluminum comes in new navy blue and red colors and gold, silver, and space gray.

The stainless steel model has a classic yellow gold tone, a black-gray color called graphite, and silver. The titanium model comes in natural titanium and space black.
Strap changes are a big part of the Apple Watch experience for many people, and this year Apple debuted some great new options, including the $49 Solo Loop (which you can choose to purchase with the watch because the default Sport Loop) and the $99 Braided Solo Loop. Both have no clasps, buckles, or overlapping parts and come in a variety of colors. They stretch over your wrist and come in nine different sizes to ensure a snug fit. Solo Loop is made of liquid silicone rubber, while the Braided version is made of 100% post-consumer recycled yarn braided around a thin silicone thread.

For this review, I tested the 40mm GPS and the six series mobile phones with blue aluminum housing and Deep Blue Sports Loop. Apple also sent a size 4 Atlantic Blue Braided Solo Loop strap, which perfectly fits my wrist. Between the $499 watch and the $99 extra strap, the total cost of the watch pictured below is $598.

The new Braided Solo Loop looks classy yet sophisticated and casual. It feels secure and is easy to get on and off, but its $99 price tag is hard to swallow. For comparison, the fancy Milanese Loop is also $99.
Apple includes a charging cable in the box with the watch, but you don’t get a USB power adapter. Apple says it decided to help the environment and have the same impact as removing 50,000 cars from the roads.

Design

Like it or not, the Series 6 has the distinctive square design with rounded corners that the Apple Watch is known. The 40mm model measures 1.56 x 1.35 x 0.42 inches (HWD), while the 44mm model is slightly taller and wider but the same thickness, at 1.73 x 1.48 x 0. 42 inches.

Looking at the Series 6 next to the Series 5, it’s hard to tell the difference beyond the color and strap. Indeed, Apple hasn’t made any changes to the screen’s size or resolution. Finally, the 40mm model has a 1.57-inch display with 394 x 324 pixels, while the 44mm Series 6 has a 1.73-inch display with 448 x 368 pixels.

The Series 6 is light and comfortable on my wrist, even when I wear it to bed. The 40mm and 44mm aluminum models weigh in at 1.07 ounces and 1.28 ounces without the strap. The heaviest stainless steel models are 1.40 ounces and 1.66 ounces, and the titanium models weigh 1.22 ounces and 1.45 ounces.

The Series 6 is water-resistant to a depth of 165 feet. Apple says it’s safe for shallow-water activities like swimming. You can also wear it in showers and hot tubs. However, you shouldn’t wear it while scuba diving, water skiing, or “other activities involving high-speed water or deep diving,” Apple says.

Setup and interface

The Series 6 is partially charged, and as soon as you take it out of the box and turn it on, a screen will appear on your iPhone asking if you want to set up the watch for yourself or someone else using the Family Setup service. Apple’s new family does not. It will then instruct you to put on your watch, hold it to your phone’s camera, and align the watch face with the on-screen viewfinder to pair. As soon as I do this, it says the Apple Watch is paired and asks if I want to restore from a backup or set it up as a new watch. I regularly use Series 5, so I chose to restore from that device.

You have the option to enable the Blood Oxygen app during setup, which allows you to check your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels and measure them throughout the day (you can also enable this later). Next, you can optionally enable automatic updates; if you do, you’ll get a notification before installing the update. It then asks if you want to set up Apple Pay.

Next, it goes through emergency SOS and fall detection features. To call emergency services, press and hold the side button. Doing so will also send a message to your emergency contacts. The watch will automatically call emergency services with fall detection enabled if it detects you’ve fallen hard. You can turn this off in the Apple Watch app if you want.

If you have a mobile model, it goes into the mobile setup. With this feature, you can make and receive calls and access apps using cellular data when your Apple Watch is not connected to your iPhone. When you click Set up cellular, it brings up a new page that lets you sign in with your carrier and add your Apple Watch to your plan (usually an additional monthly charge on your bill mobile application). Next, it flips through the watch faces, noting that you can change them later in the app or the watch itself.

As with other Apple Watch models, you navigate the Series 6 with swipes to scroll and move and taps to select. To see your notifications, swipe down from the top edge of the screen. To see your battery level and access additional controls like Do Not Disturb, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

The Series 6 also has Apple’s signature digital crown on the top right. Please press this button to return to the watch face; long-press it to talk to Siri; or rotate it to scroll, zoom, or adjust.
Below the digital crown on the right side of the screen is a button with various functions. You can tap it to access your open apps quickly; double-tap it to get Apple Pay; or long-press it for Medical ID, Emergency SOS, and power.

Blood oxygen index

Here, the standout feature is a new sensor that can measure your blood oxygen saturation, also known as SpO2. The indicator shows how circulatory and respiratory systems are delivering oxygenated blood to the body. A reading of your SpO2 alone cannot diagnose COVID-19, but as Yale Medical School advises, a reading below 90 percent can warrant you must go to an emergency room.

The Series 6 uses the same technology as a pulse oximeter — the device they clip to your finger at the doctor’s office — to measure the oxygen saturation of your blood. Its SpO2 sensor shines red and infrared light through your skin, into the blood vessels in your wrist, and measures the color of your blood, indicating how much oxygen is available. Bright red blood is usually more saturated, and dark red blood is less. Changes in your body or altitude can affect your blood oxygen levels.

The meter can calculate your SpO2 level in 15 seconds, whenever you want. The sensor also records background measurements periodically when you are asleep and inactive.
The first time you open the Blood Oxygen app on your watch, you’ll see some helpful tips for getting a good reading. Apple says your watch band should fit snugly but comfortably, and to make sure the watch isn’t too low on your wrist. You should keep the watch facing up and try not to move during the reading. Placing your arm on a table can be helpful.

When the blood oxygen scan starts, you will see a 15-second countdown timer on the screen along with a relaxing blue and red image. After 15 seconds, your blood oxygen saturation percentage will appear on the screen. You can also view blood oxygen measurements in the Health app on your iPhone.

The meter provides information about this metric to help you interpret your data. It says most people have blood oxygen levels between 95 and 100 percent. The first time I used this feature, Series 6 said my blood oxygen saturation was 99 percent. The second time I took the reading, it was after a three-mile run on the beach, and I was happy to see my SpO2 level was 100 percent.

In the Health app on your iPhone, you can see a record of all your measurements and see a graph of your blood oxygen levels for the day, week, month, or year. It also shows your daily range and average, and you can filter the data to only show your SpO2 levels in high-altitude environments or during sleep.

That isn’t a novel feature, as many other fitness trackers and smartwatches can measure your SpO2 levels, including the Garmin Vivoactive 4, Samsung Galaxy Watch3, and Fitbit Sense. However, Fitbit Sense only automatically measures your blood oxygen saturation when you wear it to bed, and you need a specific watch face activated for it to work. It also took a full two minutes.

Performance improvements

On the inside, the Series 6 has 32GB of storage and Apple’s new dual-core S6 System in a Package (SiP), which it says delivers 20% faster performance than the S5 chip in the Series 5 and Watch SE. The S6 also allows for improved screen brightness — the display still has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, but it gets brighter in ambient mode when you’re looking down at your wrist.

Apple says it has increased the display’s maximum brightness from 200 nits to 500 nits when your wrist is bent, making it easier to see in bright sunlight. It’s a welcome addition for me personally since I live in Florida and spend a lot of time at the beach. I can attest that the Series 6’s display is significantly easier to read when walking the dog outside and looking down.

Series 6 also has a new antenna with twice the spectrum of Series 5, allowing it to support 5GHz Wi-Fi for the first time. That can help free up congested 2.4GHz bands while also allowing access to faster 5GHz bands.

According to Apple, the Series 6 offers the same 18 hours of battery life as the Series 5 but consumes less battery when streaming music and tracking certain workouts like indoor and outdoor runs. In testing, this watch surprisingly beat Apple’s estimates. After wearing it for a full 24 hours, it still has 14% battery left. During that time, I turned on the always-on display and used the watch to track 37 minutes of running with GPS. I also use Do Not Disturb mode most of the time, so I don’t get notifications, extending battery life. After almost 25.5 hours, I got the message that the battery had dropped to 10 percent, so I finally put it on the charger.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 offered similar battery life in the test, but the Fitbit Sense lasted about three days.
One interesting improvement is that the Series 6 charges faster than the Series 5, taking about two hours to charge fully. Series 6 charges to 80 percent in about an hour and 100 percent in 90 minutes.

An altimeter is always on

The Series 6 features an always-on altimeter, making it easy to check your altitude indoors and outdoors in real-time (this feature is also available on the cheaper Watch SE). This feature is especially useful for hikers and downhill skiers.

The watch uses data from barometric pressure sensors, GPS, and nearby Wi-Fi networks to determine your exact location and update your altitude on the go. You can also add your elevation as a complication on the watch face.

I find this feature useful, even in flat Florida. I added an altitude complication to my watch face, and it’s interesting to see it change in real-time, especially when I get closer to the beach near my house, in certain areas below sea level, according to Series 6.
I may find this feature particularly useful during hurricane season and in the future when I’m looking for a new home. Series 6 tells me my current home is about 35 feet above sea level, so if a storm hits me with a tidal forecast greater than that, I’ll know how to get out of town. When I start house hunting in the future, I will use my Apple Watch to check the elevation of potential properties to make a more informed decision.

WatchOS7

The latest version of Apple’s smartwatch operating system, watchOS 7, offers several useful features, including automatic hand wash detection with a 20-second countdown timer, sleep tracking, patterns, New workouts, and cycling directions in select cities. WatchOS 7 also has some new watch faces.
You don’t need a Series 6 to take advantage of these features. WatchOS 7 is also available on Apple’s Series 3, 4, and 5 watches and the new Watch SE.

After beta testing watchOS 7 on my Series 5 for over a month, the hand wash countdown timer has become necessary in my life, especially with COVID-19. The watch uses a motion sensor to detect hand washing movements and a microphone to listen for running water. When it detects you’re washing your hands, it shows a 20-second timer on the screen, so you don’t have to hum Happy Birthday twice in your head. When you’re done, the watch vibrates slightly and puts your thumb up on the screen.
I like this feature, and I miss it every time I wash my hands when I test other wearables. I find that the countdown timer is sometimes triggered when I’m washing fruits and vegetables in the sink, but I take that as a cue to rinse again.

Apple is late to the game with sleep tracking, as most smartwatches and fitness trackers already offer the feature, and Apple’s version is still pretty basic. After you put your Apple Watch to bed, the Health app on your iPhone shows when you fell asleep, woke up, and spent the total time in bed and asleep during the night. It also displays a graph of your heart rate, with maximum and minimum beats recorded per minute. It charts your sleep for the week and month and displays your average time in bed and your average sleep time.

More wearables, including the $150 Fitbit Charge 4, track more stats like your deep, light sleep and REM; give a graph showing when you sleep and stay awake throughout the night; and gives you a sleep score that can help you quickly gauge the quality and recovery value of your shuteye. If you plan to use your Apple Watch to track your sleep, you’ll probably need to modify your charging habits due to its battery life. Instead of charging at night, I recommend charging it quickly in the morning when you’re getting ready for work or in the evening when you’re getting ready for bed.

Another notable addition to watchOS 7 is Family Setup, a feature that lets you use your own iPhone to set up an Apple Watch for your child or another family member. Parents can use Family Setup to approve the contacts their kids can communicate. The service also provides automatic location notifications, so you can, for example, receive an alert when your child gets home from school. The user you’re setting up with will have their account and phone number through a separate mobile plan (this feature is only available on mobile watch models).

Health Extras

The Series 6 has all the great health, safety, and lifestyle features of its predecessor. These include ECG readings, high and low heart rate notifications, irregular heartbeat notifications, menstrual cycle monitoring, fall detection, high decibel alerts, emergency SOS and international emergency calls. The Watch’s Move, Exercise, and Stand rings are a personal favorite, as they help keep me active and cheer me up while doing it.

Before the end of the year, Apple plans to launch Fitness+, a $9.99 monthly or $79.99 annual at-home fitness service. Fitness+, which requires an Apple Watch Series 3 or later paired with an iPhone, promises to deliver a range of workouts led by world-class coaches for the comfort and safety of your home. When you stream Fitness + workouts on your iPhone or iPad, metrics from your Apple Watch, including workout duration, heart rate, and calories burned, as well as your Activity Loop, will appear on the screen.
Later this year, Apple also plans to add a Low Cardio Fitness feature to notify you if your VO2 Max falls to the low end.

Application

Additional Apple Watch features that I’ve found useful include Apple Pay for contactless payments, Siri language translation, and an overall messaging and calling experience, including the ability to read text responses and view written images on the watch’s display.
Perhaps the watch’s strongest point is still the App Store, which lets you browse and install apps right on the watch itself. With over 20,000 Apple Watch apps available, it easily has the largest, highest quality third-party selection of any wearable.

In addition to downloading apps and swapping bands, changing watch faces is a fun way to customize your device, and Apple has some new options for you to choose. WatchOS 7 includes seven new watch faces: GMT, which shows multiple time zones at once; Countdown, allowing you to keep track of elapsed time; Chronograph Pro, chronograph with tachymeter; Typograph, which offers three customizable styles; Artist, featuring a dynamic portrait created in collaboration with artist Geoff McFetridge; Memoji, featuring animated Apple characters; and stripes; Can be customized based on what you’re wearing, your support for a goal or your favorite sports team.

Compare and conclude

Since the Apple Watch first launched five years ago, one of its main functions has been to help you keep track of your health. Series 6 offers two key features that build on this and can help keep you safe in the age of COVID-19 — SpO2 sensor allows you to monitor blood oxygen saturation levels, and a counter reverse helps you be honest when washing your hand. The Series 6 impresses even more with its faster processor, always brighter display, and an improved altimeter that can track your elevation changes in real-time.

It easily outperforms Google Wear OS-based watches like the Moto 360 and offers a much more complete smartwatch experience than Fitbit’s health-focused models. If you already own a Series 5, the Series 6 is only really worth the upgrade if you absolutely must have an altimeter or always-on SpO2. But between advanced Fitness and health tracking, safety and lifestyle features, and a wide selection of downloadable apps, the Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch on the market and our editors’ choice.

That said, if the $399 starting price is over your budget, the new Apple Watch SE offers many of the same features as the Series 6 — including a hand wash timer, sleep tracking, cadence notifications heart, etc. — for $120 less. However, it lacks the always-on display and some of the more advanced health features of the Series 6, including the ability to take an electrocardiogram and measure your blood oxygen saturation. It’s a powerful alternative to the Series 6 if you don’t mind a less health-focused experience.

Advantages

Always-on altimeter for real-time altitude tracking
Improve screen brightness from the wrist down
WatchOS 7 adds a hand wash countdown timer and sleep tracking
