APU Richland for desktops still focus on improving performance by integrating the Radeon HD 8000 series graphics.

Not long ago, AMD introduced the first third-generation (first codename Richland) APU chip for laptops and hybrid devices while low-voltage (TDP 17W) and computer chips Table (TDP 100W) was released at the end of last quarter II.

Basically, APU Richland is considered a refreshing upgrade from the Trinity chip with its Piledriver microarchitecture design and 32nm High-K Metal Gate SOI manufacturing technology. Despite the same power consumption (TDP), Richland has a higher clock core and works better than Trinity. In addition, Richland APUs with integrated graphics processor Radeon HD 8000 series also contribute significantly to improve graphics processing power.

The concept of APU (Graphics Acceleration Processor) was introduced in 2009 by introducing the Fusion platform, but this project lasted until mid-2010, launching the first Fusion APU at Computex. In spite of this, in fact, AMD’s breakthroughs started with the second-generation A-series graphics processor (code-named Trinity). The Trinity APU is based on the 32nm Piledriver microarchitecture, designed to target the popular notebook and desktop computers.

Richland currently has five desktop-based APUs, ranging from popular to high-end, with the highest performance model being the A10-6700 with 65W power consumption (TDP) and APU sample does not lock coefficient A10-6800K, TDP 100W. In addition, the Richland APU models also use FM2 – 904 pins socket, compatible with AMD A55, A75 and A85X chipset motherboards. Thus, users do not have to change the whole new hardware platform when upgrading from Trinity to Richland.

Performance

For reference, Test Lab conducted two APU Richland chips including A10-6800K, A8-6600K and performance comparison with Trinity A10-5800K chips. The top three APU designs are based on the Piledriver microarchitecture, equipped with 4 cores with no lock multiplier, 4MB L2 cache memory and 100W power consumption (TDP).

The difference is that the A10-6800K runs at 4.1GHz and can accelerate to 4.4GHz thanks to Turbo Core technology. The processor also supports dual-channel DDR3 memory up to 2133GHz, integrated graphics (iGPU) HD 8670D at 844MHz, with 384 stream processing units, 24 units Texture texture and 8 color ROP units.

The midrange processor A8-6600K has a slightly lower clock speed than the A10-6800K, which defaults to 3.9GHz and reaches 4.2GHz when accelerated. The A8-6600K supports dual-channel DDR3 bus 1866GHz, integrated HD 8570D graphics at 844MHz but only 256 stream processing units, 16 texture units and 8 color ROP units.

Similarly, the Trinity A10-5800K chipset also runs at a default clock rate of 3.9GHz and 4.2GHz when accelerated, supporting 1866GHz dual-channel DDR3 buses. Integrated graphics (iGPU) The HD 7660D runs at 800MHz, has 384 stream processing units, 24 texture units and 8 color ROP units.

The A10-6800K with high processor cores, powerful integrated graphics, scores were superior to the other two APUs in the tests. Specifically with the 3DMark 11 graphics test, the Performance mode (resolution 1280×720 pixels), the Richland A10-6800K is 2.1% higher than the Trinity A10-5800K and higher than the A8-6600K to 21.2%. With Cinebench evaluating the multi-threaded performance of the CPU, the A10-6800K is 8.1% and 6.5% higher than the A10-5800K and A8-6600K, respectively. In the overall evaluation of the test configuration with PCMark 8, the Richland A10-6800K continues to demonstrate overall strength with a higher score of 2.5% and 8.8%, respectively, than the other APUs.

On the A8-6600K side, boosting the CPU clock to a higher level and integrating the 8570D HD graphics core significantly improves overall performance and mid-range APU performance. With Cinebench, the A8-6600K reached 3.38 points, slightly higher than the A10-5800K’s 3.33. Similar to the 3DMark 11 and 3DMark Fire Strike tests, the Physic score shows that the CPU performance of the A8-6600K is no less than that of the A10-5800K.

Power consumtion

Test the power consumption of the test configuration (not including the monitor) through the 3DMark 11 graphics test, the system power is recorded using GPU-z software and Logger Lite in normal environment (about 30 – 31 degrees Celsius).

In idling mode, the test configuration capacity of all three APU samples was not significantly different, with the highest of A10-6800K reaching 56.3W and lowest of A8-6600K with 53.6W (calculated By average value). However, in the 3DMark 11, A10-6800K and A8-6600K graphics tests have power consumption 150.5W and 148.5W, respectively, higher than 140.2W of A10-5800K.

Considering power consumption, the APU Richland 2 models have no “improvement” over the previous generation. This also reflects the fact that AMD’s processors are still focused on improving performance, while Intel’s Haswell chips have shifted to mobile direction, better controlling the energy use of components in the chip.

General assessment

The test results show that each processor has the opportunity to show its own advantages. In addition, 3DMark results and DirectX 11 games such as DiRT 3, Alien Vs. Predator 1.03 also shows the graphics performance of the test APUs quite impressive, can play well the current heavy games at 1280×720 pixel resolution with good graphics quality, even with some specific games as DiRT 3 runs smoothly at pushing the resolution up to 1920×1080 pixels, setting the 2xAA anti-aliasing mode. This is also good news for users when the cost is not too large, relative performance, suitable for learning, work and entertainment.
