Open the box:

The box of the ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps OC on my hand today almost no change compared to the 10Gbps version except the 11Gbps GDDR5X insisted that the memory chip has been upgraded.

As the highest end product line of ASUS, the GTX 1080 11Gbps is in favor of two-pack packaging. Inside the packaging, the product information is black with the Strix logo. Open the lid, we have a small box containing the driver disk and the instruction manual is placed neatly in the middle of the protective foam.

The GTX 1080 11Gbps is packaged exactly like the 10Gbps version with the thick foam around to provide the best protection. In addition to the user manual and driver discs, ASUS also offers gamers a port forward as well as two cable ties with the Republic of Gamers logo. This is almost standard on all ROG Strix graphics cards.

The front and rear of the product are no different from their predecessors, while still being equipped with a large 3-fan cooling system. The LED RGB part is also decorated quite delicate with two strips of light running along the sides of the fan. The scratch-resistant aluminum backplate is also enhanced with ROG logo incorporating RGB LEDs. As such, with this type of graphics card turned down in most computer cases, this card will stand out with the ROG logo shining.

The top and bottom of the GTX 1080 11Gpbs is nothing short of outstanding, but we can see how thick the copper heat dissipation of this card is. The ROG logo at the top is illuminated by the RGB LED strip on the front of the card so it is not possible to customize the color separately. The GeForce GTX backlight logo is still a minus point, though most AIB manufacturers such as MSI, Gigabyte, do not even have the backlight for this logo, even for the most advanced cards. In addition, we can also see that the source configuration of the GTX 1080 is 8 + 6pin, quite overwhelmed to overclock if needed thanks to the total power can provide up to 300W.

The 2 sides are also standard equipment like the GTX 1080 10Gbps with 2 PWM fans to provide the best cooling effect through the two blowers on the front of the case. Standard output ports with two DisplayPort ports, two HDMI 2.0 ports and one DVI-D port are available for all screen configurations.

Inside the product:

The disassembly of the Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps is not easy because ASUS has designed a plastic frame to support the product to help it less shabby because of the light weight. This frame also acts as a conductor of heat from the memory chips to the radiator so that they can achieve the highest performance.

The heart of the GTX 1080 11Gbps is the Nvidia GP104-410-A1 GPU, which ranks third in the Pascal family. Surrounded by 8 1-GB Micron memory chips with up to 11Gbps upgraded bandwidth, equivalent to GTX 1080 Ti memory chips. Power supplies for the GPU and memory chips are assured through a 10-phase VRM system.

In turn, from left to right are the power pins for the fan heatsink, RGB LED pins and two PWM fans that the user can use to power the fan on the front of the case. As advertised by ASUS, these two fan feet will help optimize the card’s cooling performance by adjusting the fan to GPU temperature.

With a high-end graphics card, the dismantling is complicated. After you have removed the heat dissipation, you will have to remove six more screws to open the backplate. The ROG logo section is also directly connected to the board for easy navigation through AURA Sync.

The bulky heatsink weighs around 6-700g, ensuring the best heat dissipation for the GPU and related components. All copper or copper conductors are nickel-plated to indicate the level of the product. The GPU’s exposed surface is also polished like an eyeglass.

Due to the LED, both the top and bottom are available, the Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps can stand out in any case.

Performance:

The gaming capabilities of any GTX 1080 are unquestionable. With the powerful GP104 GPU and up to 8GB of internal memory, this graphics card is ready to battle in any resolution of 4K or below. However, if you want to be smoother, 2K is still a more secure option. Temporary 4K is still the sanctuary of GTX 1080 Ti or higher. However, what we are more interested in in evaluating performance is probably the difference between the 11Gbps and 10Gbps versions.

The graphics score in the 3DMark TimeSpy’s test tool is 7482 points. Compared to the graphics of the GT 1030 that I have the opportunity to write a review recently, it is more than seven times. One point to keep in mind is that because of the experimental configuration using the Ryzen CPU, the results may be slightly affected by the software developer’s optimization capabilities.

With the GPGPU tool of the AIDA64 software suite, we can see that the read-write speed has increased significantly compared to its predecessor. The computing performance is almost unchanged by the GPU remains unchanged.

The Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps also scores pretty impressive at the extreme 1080p setting of the Unigine Superposition. This is not surprising, as the GTX 1080 is only marginally better than the GTX 1080 Ti and TITAN Xp.

Actual test, ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps scores slightly better than its predecessor. However, at this very high FPS level, the difference is that only a few FPS are too difficult to recognize.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided can be considered a very popular game for hardware testing thanks to its very intuitive benchmarking engine. Again, the difference in average FPS and minimum FPS is almost nonexistent. With a minimum FPS margin of just 2, I find this may even be a mistake in the testing process.

At 1080p, game titles like Doom can not be a problem for a graphics monster like the GTX 1080. Therefore, the maximum FPS level – 200 is also the average FPS of the game. Of course, sometimes in scenes with large environments and lots of freaks, FPS can be a bit tilted, but it’s still hard to recognize on the 144-o’clock display.

In another game Hitman with a variety of benchmark tools also shows us that to make it difficult for the GTX 1080 is a pretty impossible task at 1080p resolution. In this test, we again see the performance of the GTX 1080 11Gbps is a bit more, but not significantly compared to the 10Gbps.

GTA V is similar to setting max settings at 1080p resolution. It’s hard to deny the difference between the new and old versions of the GTX 1080, but the difference is too small.

In addition, I also enlisted in DotA 2 with this card. At 4K resolution, memory bandwidth seems to have helped FPS to be a little more stable. However, the average FPS also does not show the superiority of the 11Gbps version. Indeed, DotA 2 at 4K resolution has given me a whole new experience of the sharpness of items or illustrations of items in the game.

Additional features:

As with all other ROG graphics cards, the Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps is also equipped with LED RGB system with 7 all effects. However, a minus point is that the radiator fan strip and the ROG logo on the backplate can not be independently tuned but always have to be synched to make the personalization of the system shrink a bit.

However, when put on a full RGB engine like my bench test, the LED light is still outstanding and makes it easy to see that this is a Republic of Gamers graphics card.

One plus point of the ROG graphics card is the part where the LEDs indicate the source connection. When unplugged or unplugged, the lights will turn red. When the power cord is fixed, the luminaire will have white light. The laptops have even appeared on lower-end cards like the Strix RX570.

Temperature and power consumption:

The results after 15 minutes of running Furmark showed that the heat dissipation of the Strix GTX 1080 11Gbps is extremely impressive. The highest temperature is only 65W while the fan start temperature is 55 degrees. The power consumption of this card when running at full capacity only stopped at 200W. No matter which version of Founders Edition requires only one 8-pin power source, it’s enough to put aside the power required for the heat sink and light bulb, so that the user is able to overclock slightly. The card itself is OC, so overclocking does not really make sense. So, with a one-card system, real power 500W is the minimum you need to build your machine.

Conclude:

ASUS ROG Strix 1080 11Gbps OC is a powerful graphics card with enhanced memory chips as well as overclocked. Performance on games with AAA resolution of 2K or less is probably unquestionable. Upgraded memory chips also help to squeeze some extra performance out of the GP104 GPUs. However, this difference is not so obvious for a person who owns a GTX 1080 10Gbps to think about the upgrade. Not to mention, this is the moment that the virtual fever has not shown signs of cooling not only AMD GPU but also Nvidia severe scarcity, which means that the retail price will be slightly higher than normal. If there is a chance, I would advise people to buy the 11Gbps version to get the best performance for the same amount of money. But if the available or second-hand buy the 10Gbps version will not disappoint you.
