What’s new?

When we reviewed the original RT-AC66U Router in 2012, it won for its performance and features. The latest version, the RT-AC66U B1, uses the same textured black housing but offers several upgrades in the form of a newer, more powerful chipset, the addition of a USB 3.0 port, AiProtection powered by Trend Micro, and compatibility with Asus AiMesh Technology, allowing you to create networks by combining different Asus Router models.

This device measures 1.7 x 8.5 x 5.8 inches (HWD) and has three adjustable antennas. The back panel houses four gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, a USB 2.0 port, the power jack, the power, reset, and WPS buttons. A USB 3.0 port can be found on the front edge, and there’s an activity LED at the top for power, internet, all four LAN ports, and both radio bands.

RT-AC66U B1 is equipped with a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 128 MB flash memory, and 256 MB RAM. It is a 3×3 AC1750 Router that can reach maximum speeds of up to 450Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1,300Mbps on the 5GHz band. It supports beamforming, which transmits signals directly to the client, but does not transmit MU-MIMO concurrent data.

The RT-AC66U B1 is managed using the web-based AsusWRT control panel or the Asus Router app for iOS and Android devices. The panel opens to a screen with a network map in the center. A system status panel on the right and the General and Advanced menu on the left. The General menu contains the USB and Guest Network applications and a Traffic Analyzer that displays guest network usage by date and time.

In AiProtection settings, you can configure Trend Micro’s network protection utilities, including Malicious Website Blocking, Bidirectional IPS (Intrusion Prevention System), Infected Device Protection, and Security Assessment Router password.

Other General settings include Adaptive QoS, which allows you to specify application-based network priorities easily and includes Gaming, Media Streaming, Surfing, and custom presets. Here you can also view the history of the visited web pages of the client and the allowed bandwidth limit. Use AiCloud settings to connect and manage the Router from anywhere via the internet.

In the Advanced menu, you can configure settings for MAC filtering, Radius Server, and Wireless Bridge, as well as professional settings such as RTS Threshold, Signaling Interval, Beam Format, and WPS connections. Other Advanced options allow you to configure VPN, IPv6, and Firewall settings, as well as view Syslog, upgrade firmware, and backup your Router settings.

Good performance for the price

Routers these days are usually very easy to set up and configure, and the RT-AC66U B1 is no different. I started by connecting the Router to my desktop and my cable modem and waited a minute or two to get an IP address and connect to the internet. I typed http://router.asus.com into the address bar of my browser, which automatically launches the Quick Settings utility. I verified my IP address, changed the Router username and password, changed the SSID and password for both radio bands, and it’s done.

The RT-AC66U B1 performed better than other low-cost routers we tested. Its score of 97Mbps on our 2.4GHz proximity test (in the same room) is faster than its predecessors, the RT-AC66U and D-Link DIR-859. It also beats the TP-Archer C7 V2, if only by 6Mbps. On the 30-foot 2.4GHz test, the RT-AC66U B1’s 65Mbps score surpassed older RT-AC66U and the Archer C7 V2 by a bit but was more than twice as fast as the D-Link DIR-859.

The transfer rate of the RT-AC66U B1 on the 5GHz band is significantly better than what we saw with the original RT-AC66U. It achieved 551Mbps in the proximity test compared to the older Router’s 129Mbps score. The D-Link DIR-859 and Archer C7 V2 also trailed the RT-AC66U B1 in this test. At 30 feet, the RT-AC66U B1 clocked in at 230Mbps, nearly double the score of the 2012 version and the D-Link DIR-859. Archer C7 V2 leads the way with 250Mbps.

We moved a 1.5GB folder containing a mix of music, video, photo, and document files between a USB drive and a wired desktop to test file-transfer performance based on reading speed and its record. The RT-AC66U B1 hit 34MBps in the written test and 38MBps in the reading test, beating the TP-Link Archer C7 V2, which scored 27MBps in both tests.
