Available in matte black, high-gloss white, or natural bamboo finishes (for $569 instead of $499), the A5+ wireless speaker features rounded edges and a classic bookshelf look. Each is 27.5cm high and 18cm wide. At 23 cm, the left speaker is a bit deeper than the right (19.8 cm) because it houses the controls and connections and the heatsink protruding from the back. It is also heavier, at 6.9 kg compared to 4.3 kg on the right. When unboxing the speaker system, it’s presented luxuriously — each with its own gray velcro zipper protection pocket and a smaller pocket for cables.

The acoustic guitar strike and higher register percussion tracks also benefit from high mids and highs. There isn’t any aspect of the audible frequency range that is much more favored than others. In other words, this is pretty close to the flat-style frequency response that many audiophiles look for, which is rare in the wireless speaker arena.

In Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum ring has many mid-high tones—enough to accentuate the attack and propel the loop’s punch forward in the mix—but it doesn’t seem overly dexterous or puffy. Sub-bass synth hits that interrupt the beat may sound a bit backtracked — there’s a depth we didn’t quite hear, but a connected subwoofer can handle this. Orchestral tracks, such as the opening scene in John Adams’ Other Gospels by Our Lady, sound beautiful over the A5 + Wireless. The lower register gauge has a strong, full presence that doesn’t seem much enhanced — just full, round, and precise. The same can be said about the higher register strings, brass and vocals – there is a lot of crisp, bright sound here, but none invented by the driver – which is quite close to the actual sound of the recording.

Do I choose a subwoofer? Well, I have to admit that I like sub-bass and what it can do in a mix when applied sparingly. I don’t feel the need for a sub here, but if you know you like the rumble and bang it can deliver, the A5+ Wireless should sound great with a well-balanced unit.
