Did you know that FPS is one of the “forever young” game genres? No, I do not mention the age of this genre, but the FPS games that are considered “classic” are completely able to stand on the same level (sometimes beat) modern products when Just talking about the game’s design. That is 2018, but the modding community of the first Doom version is still growing!
Painkiller, one of the classic FPS, and sometimes referred to by the phrase “a colorless Polish version of Serious Sam,” brought developer People Can Fly into Epic Games’ sights. The afterlife of the “flying Warsaw people” was tied to the Gears of War. So tight that their next standalone product was a game created to promote Gears of War 3 – That is Bulletstorm, one of the most “low” FPS titles in console generation 7, but possesses a community of passionate fans.
Seven years later, the relationship between People Can Fly and Epic Games was removed. Gearbox Software opened its game publishing division by bringing Bulletstorm to the modern public with a remastered version, with a name that seems to want to tease those familiar with guns – Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition. However, unlike classic FPS games, maybe time makes Bulletstorm more or less blurred.
The original Bulletstorm came out in 2011. I looked forward to it for many different reasons – because it came from Painkiller’s developer, it looked “cool,” it was self-explanatory, claiming to be a high-paced shooter title. In opposition to the bullshit military shooter trend that’s prevalent at the moment due to the explosion of Call of Duty.
We’re talking about a timeline that DICE also tried to put in Battlefield 3, a single-player so badly that the biggest scrap yard on Earth does not want to harbor it. So the novelty Bulletstorm brings is impossible controversy – especially when Epic Games and People Can Fly are so confident they have released a small “game” parodying this trend called Duty Calls.
But that is the story of 2011. Many FPS products with classic style began to “emerge” on the ground, and do not forget to modernize for the trend (in which there is a remake of Painkiller called Hell & Damnation). Most importantly: they “make money” on a lot of factors besides the main “shit.” That is the slippage point of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, especially in the “hypocrisy” of People Can Fly when making fun of stereotypical features of the military shooting genre, but they use them into Bulletstorm.
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is an extremely linear FPS game with a length of 7 hours, but the pace is so poorly balanced that the 2 hours near the end of the game can be removed and not affected. Nothing to the plot. Wait, the story? Yes, if you take the motifs of clichés of revenge and play pranks on each other, the bad conversation with only a few highlights lies in the clever use of vulgar words, the ridiculous narration. What’s in it, and the humorous style suitable for children under the age of 12 who qualify to be called a “storyline,” perhaps Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition can satisfy you. Looking for some sense of humor in an FPS game? Enjoy two versions of the Shadow Warrior of Flying Wild Hog; Lo Wang alone is enough to shatter the cardboard labeled “character” in Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition.
There are many elements in the gameplay of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition that even if you play in 2011 or 2018, they can’t hide their old nature and poor design. The whole game collects extremely linear regions of polarity tied together with quirky vacation arrangements, sometimes forcing you to dig into narrow paths between expansive shooting zones. You can’t jump (you can only hold the Space button to climb over obstacles), but there is a lower button (Crouch); although it does not serve the gameplay, the number of invisible walls filling the screen. Playing is incalculable; the game QTE abuses as much as any military shooting game …
And especially the point that annoys the writer the most: the animations are performed automatically – you want to jump to the ground from an elevated area? Press the R button. That can only exist in FPS games that were released around 2011, and the player’s arsenal in Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is just a good deal. The Peacemaker Carbine automatic rifle is also a really basic weapon that’s too trivial and not worth taking the main gun position (you can’t swap it for another gun) – only really pretty decent if you use it. Using “gong” shooting mode; The Head Hunter sniper rifle stands out only because it allows the player to adjust 1/3 of the bullet’s flight path. And this is the most contradictory feature in the main design style of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition. The game offers players six guns (7 if including the whip), and each weapon has a “gong” shooting mode that uses a different number of bullets. The problem is that after unlocking the gong mode, the player has no more interesting “toys” to open, causing the last 1/3 of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition to become innocuous taste and boring.
After unlocking the Penetrator as your ultimate weapon, all the SP points you win seem to do one thing only: deliver ammo.
That makes the gameplay of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition entangled in a boring vicious loop: you perform a beautiful Skillshot to get SP, use SP to buy bullets, use guns to continue to do more Skillshot, and then use that SP to buy more shots, and so on again until the end of the game. That is a big shortcoming in a game that favors the action because the bullets are the worst reward anyone can trade in “cool shooting” scenes to get.
Suppose People Can Fly cannot find a way to reward players for creating continuous Skillshot sequences. In that case, it is better to disassemble the upgrade system and let players explore Skillshot by themselves.
In the end, even if you’re a “hard” fan of this game, its $ 40 price tag is really … unacceptable.
Except for the appearance of the FOV bar and no Mouse Smoothing “feature,” the difference between Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition and the original is probably as small as a grain of rice.
The game graphics are extremely beautiful; the remastered version does not bring any significant upgrade (not an anti-aliasing mode); poor mixing quality makes the character’s voice in many of the cutscene was “bouncing.”
It can be said that this is the most temporary remaster version that players have the opportunity to enjoy since the 8th generation of consoles launched so far.
If I have to find a point to praise, it is not full of game errors.
I must say it again, although many aspects of Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition become obsolete in 2018, the gameplay core of the game remains unchanged.
The shooting mechanism is still very compact and feels as refreshing as ever, especially because we do not always have the opportunity to touch a gun like Screamer.
The Skillshot system may not be well designed (as mentioned above), but it would be a heavy lie if it is said that “mischief” with the challenges that Skillshot proposed is not interesting (sometimes when also quite funny).
And of course, up to now, Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition still retains the position of the game with the function to release the most creative charges in the FPS game genre up to the present time.
