About Dell Gaming Laptop G7 Series

A year ago when the Dell G7 was released, we can see it has been mentioned many times, but it is still inferior to Nitro, Strix G, or TUF. Once it was because Dell’s previous G versions were not impressive, since then, the user’s view of the product became blurred.

Design

It is no longer a bulky and heavy block, but instead a smaller and more luxurious design. In the design of the Dell G7, I can see that it has the scent of an alien spaceship, not a cargo ship anymore. Honestly, I feel an extremely good impression of the design of Dell.

Several details make the Dell G7 Series quite different from its predecessors, such as the heat outlet no longer has the honeycomb shape, the logo no longer glows, the RGB LED strip does not pulse around the machine but moves to the chassis, … And most importantly, the RGB LED part has made the G7 more Gaming-like than ever.

Next is the surface of the machine is made of aluminum, to the touch, it feels a strong rough feeling, not smooth, and weak. The refresh rate of the screen reaches 144Hz for a smooth image suitable for gamers who show their blood skills. As for the effect of the screen refresh rate, I’m sure you already know too much, so I also take the liberty of not mentioning too much detail.

Keyboard

The keyboard part of the G7 2020 gives users a keyboard that removes the number key, is soft-covered and has a larger layout than previous versions. This is the point that makes me feel satisfied with Dell’s keyboard when before it was the keyboard that disappointed me with the feeling of cheap typing, the small keys were wrong and hard.

Although there have been changes, the keystroke is not deep, this is the minus point that I have for the Dell G7, I was very hopeful and then disappointed when typing.

In addition, Dell has completely brought the fan key to the outside, completely separate from the keyboard. Now I don’t have to waste time rummaging through these fan key function keys anymore.

As for the keyboard LED, the machine is equipped with 4-zone RGB LEDs, so having to pay for RGB LEDs for each key is not too beautiful. However, we should not be too demanding, with 4-zone RGB LEDs also making the keyboard look better and more gaming-like.

Configuration

Dell G7 2020 uses Intel Core i7-10750H with 6 cores 12 threads, 16GB DDR4 Dual RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, and NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB VRAM graphics card. Although at present with Alder-Lake or the upcoming Raptor-Lake, this configuration seems to be too weak, gamers with little money can still be assured of this configuration.

In this version of G7 2020, Dell still seems to drop the door to let the hardware absorb power and heat but compensate for high performance. However, the temperature seems to be fine at 85 – 90 degrees Celsius compared to over 90 degrees Celsius in previous versions. When it is too hot, you can use the Turbo fan key to help reduce it from 1-2 degrees, but in return, the fan is quite noisy.

The Core i7-10750H CPU has a high clock speed (4.5GHz maximum, stable at 4.3GHz) and consumes a lot of power (70W) when running heavily. In terms of the ability to perform basic tasks, I also used PCMark10 to test and obtained quite positive scores.

As for the RTX 2060, although it is outdated, its performance parameters are still quite good, eating 80W of power and giving gamers quite good frames of AAA games. At present, the RTX 2060 is still a pretty good choice for gamers with little money but who want to smoothly experience their favorite games.

Internal memory

Dell’s perennial problem is overheating of the internal memory, but the Dell G7 no longer appears in this condition. Overheating of the internal memory can lead to a reduction in the life of other components inside the machine.

In the Dell G7 2020 version, we have a 512GB NVMe SSD from KIOXIA – a sub-brand of Toshiba.
