DJI has recently launched Osmo Action, its first action camera rival GoPro, especially the Hero 7 Black. We are usually familiar with DJI’s drones with unquestionable quality and video recording capabilities. Still, this time the company has launched its first action camera, entering a place where GoPro almost dominates. Will it make its opponents wary or not?

Bonus point

There is a screen on the front

HDR video recording available

Has excellent anti-vibration mode

Minus point:

No GPS

Limited enhanced resolution mode

Basic social networking and editing features

If you put DJI’s Osmo Action next to GoPro’s Hero 7 Black, you’ll realize that the two have many similar design points. Right from the moment you look at the Osmo Action, you will know it is an action camera and may mistake it for GoPro; perhaps DJI wants to entice more users this way.

The difference on Osmo Action is the front screen; this is a simple LED screen, and the reason DJI equips Osmo Action is as simple as that. That is to help users film themselves better. The 1.4-inch size is relatively small to see what is being recorded, so don’t get too attached to it. This secondary screen is not touch-sensitive like the rear screen; you have to tap on the rear screen to switch. Relatively inconvenient if you are using the front screen.

There are three physical keys on the Osmo Action, a start/stop button, a power button, and a mode switch. The camera has a button that pushes the battery out; the Osmo Action’s 1,300 mAh battery is slightly larger than the Hero 7 Black.

The interface of Osmo Action is also slow like other dash cams; the function menu system is not too special. Most menus are accessible by swiping from each edge. However, when recording and image stabilization are enabled, there is a noticeable lag between the camera monitor’s display and the lens’s front.

In terms of video recording capabilities, Osmo Action also owns several recording resolutions similar to Hero 7 Black, such as 4K 60FPS, or 30FPS and 24FPS. Other resolutions also have a 60/30/24FPS option, but unfortunately, Osmo Action does not have 120FPS recording at 2.7K resolution like the Hero 7 Black. Osmo Action also lacks some of the user-favorite recording resolutions such as 1440p, 960p, or SuperView. In addition to the optional 240, 200, 120, and 100 FPS frames offered by Osmo Action, DJI also integrates 50, 48, and 25 FPS at most resolutions. In addition, DJI also integrates HDR video recording for Osmo Action, but to use it, you must turn off image stabilization.

Unfortunately, DJI does not equip the Osmo Action with HDR capture but instead has AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing). AEB takes multiple photos at different exposures, such as continuous shooting. Osmo Action does not composite them into one high dynamic range image; it’s just that you have four differently exposed shots on the memory card.

In terms of colors when shooting, with default/auto exposure settings, Hero 7 Black delivers a slightly more saturated image; Osmo Action is a bit pale but more natural. When it comes to image stabilization, it’s hard to choose because RockSteady on Osmo Action offers good stabilization like HyperSmooth on Hero 7 Black.

Two unfortunate shortcomings of Osmo Action are GPS and quickly editing videos posted on social networks. As for the lack of GPS, it is difficult for users to comb the videos shot at a certain location, or it is impossible to know where the video was shot. As for the ability to edit videos quickly, many short videos with music are currently popular, but Osmo Action is not integrated. If you want to edit and post on social networks, you must export videos only.

Summarizing Osmo Action, with many similarities, it is still not as good as Hero 7 Black. Besides, this is DJI’s first action camera, so shortcomings are inevitable. However, the fact that the first product is close to the quality of a device honed by GoPro’s many user feedback also shows the possibility that DJI will become a big concern for GoPro in the future.
