The HP 34f Curved Display monitors up to 34 inches in size. It is pretty much an extra-wide monitor with its extremely gentle curve. This roomy Monitor provides a nice work space for multitasking, and its good mix of colors makes watching videos nice or preparing a photo for upload. (This covers almost all of the sRGB color space.)
Large-wingspan screen
The 34f is of matte black color with a silver base and silver lower bezel. Despite having a decently wide lower bezel of 2.5cm, the top and side bezels are very slim and so make for a good multi-monitor combination.
With a stand, the 34f is 45 x 72 x 19 cm (HWD) and weighs 7 kg. The case rests upon a shorter body attached to the bottom of a rectangular metal ring with a leg measurement of 26 x 18 cm. The interior of the ring can work as a “pad,” where USB drives, hard drives, or other small peripherals could be gathered. The screen supports tilt adjustments, from 5 degrees forward to 25 degrees backward, but no height or swivel adjustment.
The 34f utilizes a 34-inch Monitor (measuring diagonally) with a native resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 pixels (Ultrawide QHD, UQHD, or UWQHD), giving it a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio. The Monitor is of the IPS-type, featuring a high contrast ratio, deep blacks, and good off-axis viewing. This means the pixel density will vary up to 110 pixels per inch (PPI) and should be decently sharp from a distance given the size of the screen.
The rest of the basic specifications are similar to what we’ve seen in the 34-inch Asus PA34VC, Dell U3419W, and Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W monitors. In fact, the U3419W is a direct upgrade to U3417W, with the addition of a USB Type-C port, but it is actually being sold for less than the older model. Dell’s other 34-inch ultra-wide-display monitor, the P3418HW, has the same aspect ratio but a lower resolution (2,560 x 1,080 pixels), which results in a relatively low pixel density (82ppi).
HP doesn’t provide a curvature measure of the 34f, but it’s similar to the Dell mentioned above and Asus monitors, providing a gentle curve. In contrast, many recent console models have screens with sharper curves.
The 34f’s port selection includes two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort, one USB 3.0 Type B upstream (for connecting to a computer), and three downstream USB 3.0 Type-A ports, which charge small devices or connect external devices. The 34f lacks an audio out or speaker jack, so you’ll have to get audio from a computer or other input source.
It also lacks USB Type-C connectivity; as mentioned, the Dell U3419W has a USB-C port, while the Asus PA34VC has two.
All ports on the 34f are rear and facing out, which is also the case with the HP Pavilion 32 QHD 32-inch Display and other HP monitors we’ve reviewed recently. I want at least some USB on the side, but it’s much better than the downward-facing ports hidden behind the kickstand, which is something that too many monitors force you to deal. With the 34f, you can rotate the display to add a cable to the port of your choice.
You access the HP 34f’s virtual display (OSD) using a set of small buttons on the bottom-right edge of the Monitor. The rightmost button turns the screen on and off, while the other buttons let you navigate the OSD. It’s not as intuitive as the little four-way joystick controller found on the HP 32 QHD, but it gets the job done.
From the 34f’s main menu, you can access Brightness, Color, Picture, and Input settings. Color settings include Warm, Neutral, Cool, Natural, Custom RGB, and a range of preset picture modes.
These include Low Blue Light, Night, Reading, HP Enhance+ (a noise reduction feature), Games, Movies, Photos, and Custom. The menu choices are nearly identical with the 32 QHD; it’s just a different navigation method.
Accurate color
I performed color, brightness, and black level tests on the HP 34f using a regular Klein K10-A colorimeter, a Murideo Six-G signal generator, and the SpectraCal CalMAN 5 software. HP evaluates the brightness of the HP 34f screen (i.e., brightness per unit area) at 300 candelas per meter squared (nits), and it hit just that (281 nits) in testing. I calculated the contrast ratio at 1,112:1, which is slightly better than its 1,000:1 rating.
HP claims that the 34f covers more than 99% of the sRGB color space, and according to my tests, CalMAN showed 99.5%. That makes it suitable for image processing for the web, where sRGB is the standard color space. In the chart, the white triangle area represents the sRGB color space, while my data points for coverage are represented by the circles.
I also viewed numerous test videos and standard sample photos on the HP 34f. The videos produced rich colors and excellent detail. Pretty bright images and true colors.
The most gamer-friendly option to come with the 34f is a support-free sync adaptive sync from AMD. FreeSync lowers screen tears when the monitor is paired with a PC with a supported AMD Radeon graphics card by adjusting the Monitor refresh rate to match the frame rate output of the card. The 34f had refresh rate pixel at 60Hz, the standard non-roaming refresh rate. This Monitor suits casual gamers and offers very immersive curved-screen experience, though serious gamers will want to get a monitor with gaming-specific features.
Even so, the ultra-widescreen makes the HP 34f a good choice for multitasking. The Monitor includes HP’s My Display Smart software, which allows you to partition the screen so that multiple application windows can be opened simultaneously and allows you to save your favorite user settings for easy startup.
I’d like to see HP do better on this Monitor and with similar boards — with warranty coverage, specifically length. The company only offers a one-year plan for the 34f out of the box. Most other display manufacturers warrant their products for at least three years. Such is the case with the Asus PA34VC and Dell U3419W mentioned earlier.
Super-wide and pricewise satisfactory
As a comparatively cheap 34-inch monitor, the HP 34f Curved Display excludes some features (for example, USB-C connectivity, height adjustment, swivel adjustment, some 3-year warranty, etc.) claimed by the Asus PA34VC and Dell U3419W. On the other hand, its roomy, gently curved screen is perfect for multitasking. Our tests confirmed good colors and coverage of over 99% of the sRGB color space. It has been tested well in rendering our test shots, and to watch the video was a pleasure (whereas widescreen videos cannot fill the entire ultra-wide screen and are black-barred on the sides).
