Design and build

Slim, and it looks it — 3.8 x 2.4 x 0.8 inches, 4.3 ounces, brushed metal that feels a cut above the plastic most compacts had at this price. Comes in a few colors.

Front’s a big lens with 3x zoom, laid out cleanly. Back is mostly the 3.0-inch LCD — bright, clear, makes framing and reviewing shots easy. Feels solid in hand. Controls sit where you’d expect, dedicated buttons for power, shutter, menu, nothing buried three menus deep.

Key features

12MP off a CCD sensor — plenty of detail for prints or sharing online, sharp enough that fine detail actually survives. The 3x zoom (35-105mm equivalent, f/2.8-f/5.1) covers everyday shooting fine, and that wider aperture helps a little indoors. Screen’s 3.0 inches, 230,000 dots — big enough that framing feels easy and the menus don’t feel cramped.

Stabilization is optical, which means it’s actually countering shake, not faking it digitally, and it helps noticeably at higher zoom or in dim rooms. Video’s VGA at 30fps — nothing close to a real camcorder, fine for a quick clip. Face detection spots faces and adjusts focus and exposure on its own, which helps portraits and group shots come out right. Scene modes cover Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Sports.

EasyShare is Kodak’s whole pitch here — USB and PictBridge for transfer and printing, bundled software for organizing and uploading. It does what it says.

Performance

Good light, this camera’s solid: sharp, accurate color, detail that holds up. Low light is where it struggles — the aperture and sensor both work against it, so even with stabilization helping the shake, noise shows up and it won’t touch a pricier camera in the dark.

Autofocus is responsive in good light with single and multi-point modes, shutter lag’s minimal. Battery gets several hundred shots a charge — a full day of casual shooting, less if you’re heavy on the screen or shooting video.

Using it

Interface is easy — clear labels, a menu you don’t need instructions for, helpful prompts when something’s not obvious. The bundled software matches that simplicity for organizing and sharing once the photos are off the camera.

What works and what doesn’t

Good-looking design, solid 12MP resolution, real stabilization, an interface anyone can pick up cold, face detection that actually helps.

Zoom’s limited if you want more reach, low light performance takes a hit from the aperture and sensor, video’s stuck at VGA when other cameras had already moved past it.

Bottom line

It looks good and it’s easy to use, and the parts under the hood stabilization, face detection, a decent sensor back that up rather than just being marketing copy. It won’t compete on zoom reach or low light, but for someone who wants something straightforward and good-looking that just works, it does the job.
