The LG 38GL950G-B makes a dream ultra-wide gaming monitor with its stunning 38-inch display, boasting a short 1 millisecond response time, 144Hz refresh rate, and Nvidia G-Sync support.

The LG 38GL950G-B UltraGear curved gaming monitor has all the right boxes for gaming and it looks great doing it. The highlight here is the 38-inch, 3840 x 1600-resolution Nano IPS display that boasts Nvidia G-Sync, 1 millisecond response time, and 144Hz refresh rate, a feature set that makes it one of the best gaming monitors.

It looks even better from the back, thanks to a glowing ring of light that casts RGB colors throughout the room. But for the price, the 38GL950G-B is a serious investment, on top of which would benefit from built-in speakers and a USB-C port.

Design

Sleek, radiant, and powerful with RGB lighting at the back, the 38GL950G-B is proof enough that LG meets the needs of gamers. Ideally, I couldn’t decide what’s more appealing here, the 38-inch curved screen, the display’s 3840 x 1600 resolution, or the mesmerizing LED lighting on the rear of the panel. Whatever interests you, friends, and colleagues will have something to say about the 38GL950G-B, whether they go in front of or behind the screen.

The soft lights (LG calls them Sphere Lighting 2.0) are on the rear of the 38GL950G-B, so you can see them. However, the light is bright enough to bounce off nearby walls and even the surface of your desk.

In addition to the colored strobe light, the display’s frame is constructed from textured black plastic, while the cylindrical handle is premium metal. It measures 35.3 x 22.2 x 10.2 inches with a stand. Even with a modern design, the curved screen is still quite thick, with its widest point being 2.3 inches.

The monitor offers tilt adjustment, so you can adjust the vertical angle both up and down. Unfortunately, it doesn’t rotate, which means you’ll have to sit right in front of it for the best viewing experience. LG’s marketing material claims that the 38GL950G-B is rotatable, but you’ll only be lucky enough to rotate it a few more degrees.

Ports & Interfaces

On the LG 38GL950G-B, you find an HDMI port and a full-size DisplayPort for video output on the back of the monitor. You can connect your PC to your monitor via the upstream (type B) USB 3.0 port, and you also get a pair of downstream USB 3.0 ports for charging smartphones and other peripherals.

All of these USB ports are located on the back of the monitor, next to HDMI and DisplayPort, which makes it a bit difficult to use. There’s also a headphone/mic jack that gives you the convenience of plugging your gaming headset directly into the monitor. But keep in mind that there are no dedicated headphones and microphone jacks, so for streaming you might need a splitter.

Performance

The 38GL950G-B is a premium monitor designed for professional gamers and creatives alike, and it easily works like one. It’s a 38-inch, curved Nano IPS display with a dense 3840 x 1600 (WQHD+) resolution. If you don’t care, you could easily mistake this monitor for a TV, especially because of the 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, which displays content on a wide but narrow frame.

Playing the Resident Evil 2 remake is fun as the screen makes the zombies – the slow, shaky, groaning kind – come back amazingly. You’re easily lost in the bloodied flesh tumbling down, and the somersaults through the broken windows and down from the darkness are made more vivid than before. And in a game that’s the opposite in tone and color taste, the Scavenger looks fantastic, with all of them blue and fluid in motion. Simply put, no matter what game you throw at this screen, it looks amazing.

The incredible gaming performance is not only due to the 144Hz refresh rate, but it has been pushed down to just 1ms, meaning that even the fastest online games won’t be hindered by a single screen’s ordinary shape. Here, you get great picture quality and fast performance – all you have to deal with is the high price.

In addition to its gaming capabilities, the LG 38GL950G-B is also a G-Sync panel, which makes a lot of sense at such a high resolution. In some games like Metro Exodus, you’ll get around 50fps, but thanks to G-Sync, everything feels like you’re playing at the original frame rate. G-Sync, as long as you have a compatible Nvidia graphics card, is the same as cheating and it’s the way we all love it.

Productivity

When not gaming, this monitor will allow you to do some side work. With Ultrawide resolution, you can open two large browser windows side-by-side without having to switch to an alternate tab on your PC. You save a lot of time, and at this point, we easily recommend Ultrawide monitors to anyone who normally has a lot of work to do on their computer.

All in all, the 38GL950G-B is a super powerful high-end Ultrawide monitor that delivers excellent picture quality – although its hefty price tag puts most users on a tight budget. More affordable 34-inch alternatives include our Editors’ Choice Alienware AW3420DW and ASUS ROG Swift PG349Q, sure, you’ll spend less but you’ll lose money on the high-end design level (especially the rear LED) and short response speed – which corresponds to one of the two alternatives. So, if you want the best of the best and don’t mind the price, the LG 38GL950G-B has made a convincing statement for itself.

Conclusion

The LG 38GL950G-B makes a dream ultra-wide gaming monitor with its stunning 38-inch display boasting a short 1 millisecond response time, 144Hz refresh rate, and Nvidia G-Sync support. Unlike the Alienware AW3420DW, this 38-inch monitor has a pixel resolution (3840 x 1600), which matches its size perfectly. Now, combine that great feature set with powerful performance and a beautiful aesthetic – all with great RGB lighting – and it’s hard not to love the 38GL950G-B (as long as you can afford it).

But when you spend less than two thousand dollars on a monitor, you should expect perfection, which the 38GL950G-B falls short of. As if not having a built-in speaker wasn’t bad enough, LG went ahead and ditched USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to future-proof this investment.
