Microsoft Surface Pro 8 (model EEB-00001) is the best Surface ever released. It has a powerful 11th Gen Intel CPU and a vibrant 13-inch display, making it a good 2-in-1 for everyday use and a worthy update to the Microsoft Surface line.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is a long-awaited update that refreshes the old design of the Surface Pro line, especially the Surface Pro 7 that we reviewed in November 2019, which we summed up as a “necessary urgent upgrade”. The redesigned Pro 8 is thus a thorough recap of the Pro, more like a rewarming in terms of the Pro 6’s aesthetic, as it only updates the internals and nothing about the design.

Surface Pro 8 can be recognized as part of Microsoft’s flagship line of Windows tablets. However, it feels like a new generation with a few design changes, and Microsoft ties in with some of the fastest hardware we’ve ever seen in a Windows tablet.

While we’re lamenting the loss of some legacy ports, this is the best Surface Pro we’ve seen in years. It comes with the new Windows 11 operating system pre-installed, and that’s worth a lot.

While we’re excited about these much-needed improvements, they will come with a slight price increase. With a starting price of ~$1,099 (tested model – $1599, at the time of writing this review), the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 costs quite a bit more than its predecessor, the Surface Pro 7 starting at point ~$749 – but that price is justified by the design and newer components.

Those looking to upgrade from the Surface Pro 7 or those looking for the best 2-in-1 laptop should seriously consider the Surface Pro 8. It features a fresh, stylish design and comes with the latest hardware including includes an 11th Gen Core i5 processor, a 13-inch touchscreen, and Intel Iris Xe graphics.

Introduce

With the eighth-generation Surface Pro, Microsoft has gone deeper with a more comprehensive update, so this isn’t just the new silicon, it’s also some of the core bits of the package, from the display to the incoming port’s overall design.

However, that doesn’t mean Microsoft has completely overhauled the Surface Pro. All the strengths of the traditional Surface Pro remain intact, including the productivity-oriented 3:2 aspect ratio display, the superb Alcantara-coated Surface Pro Signature keyboard, and the innovative adjustable kickstand.

Design And Features

The Surface Pro lineup has started to stagnate, especially with the last few versions. Microsoft just updated the specs for both Surface Pro 6 and Surface Pro 7, which isn’t a bad thing, but now it needs a complete redesign. That’s especially true in the face of the new Apple iPad Pro, which Microsoft has pretty much neglected since its release, but is now starting to gain traction in the portable tablet market.

In response to the iPad Pro, the Surface Pro 8 now delivers some much-needed design highlights and enhanced performance as well. In terms of design, the obvious change is the new graphite color, which simply looks stunning. Microsoft has recently focused on lighter colors for its devices, but the switch to darker colors in this year’s lineup looks great.

The Surface Pro’s chassis is also refined with more rounded edges, making it more comfortable to hold for long periods, much better than flat surfaces with sharper corners.

The display has a smaller bezel than ever before, and this is the final design that makes the Surface pro look like a brand-new device. Now the screen looks much bigger and the device looks more premium than ever – which is welcome as the device is also more expensive than ever.

Finally, Microsoft has also changed the ports. For years, Microsoft refused to use Thunderbolt citing security concerns. Looks like they’ve finally found a workaround as the new Surface 8 now fully supports Thunderbolt 4. In total, the Surface Pro 8 has two USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 4) ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Surface Connector. However, it loses the USB 3.0 Type-A port that the Surface Pro 7 has, we’re just fine with that, it’s a tablet.

Display And Sound

Thin bezels do more than just add a premium look to the device: they allow for an 11% larger screen. The result is a 13-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,920; it’s right between 1440p and 4K, and being a 13-inch screen, that’s amazing. What makes this monitor better is that along with its larger size, it also has a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s not a gaming device to be sure, but having such a high refresh rate makes everyday computing pure, especially if you’re upgrading from a low-resolution device.

The display is configured to 60Hz out of the box, mostly in the aspect of increasing battery life, but you can always switch it back at any time by going into your monitor settings. On the Surface Pro 8, the display hits 1-3% of the sRGB spectrum and peaks at 467 nits, which makes this display incredibly stunning. Everything you want to watch on this thing, whether it’s Halftime on Netflix or Terminal List on Main Video, all looks incredible.

The sound quality on the Pro 8 isn’t as strong as what this device offers in terms of visuals, but it’s far from the worst audio we’ve ever heard on a laptop. Listening to Beyonce’s ‘Break My Soul’, the highs were clear, but the bass was somehow consumed in the background. There’s not much room for the speakers, though, so the sound comes out better than we expected. Simply put, you should use a pair of headphones.

Keyboard, Trackpad, and Webcam

Usually, Microsoft launches a new Surface Pro alongside a whole new range of Surface accessories, like a new pen and Type Cover. This time around, however, Microsoft is sticking with the same Case that debuted with the Microsoft Surface Pro X, which was hugely popular. That means you may not need a new Type Cover if you upgrade, which is good because Microsoft doesn’t include it in the box, it’s sold separately.

Although sold separately, the Type Cover is still great because it’s the same type used on the Surface Pro X. It has handy little wireless charging for the Surface Pen, surprisingly deep key travel, and key spacing. Wide means you’re always comfortable while typing. The only place the Type Cover lacks is its touchpad, which is mediocre at best. But given that the device is vastly superior to a touch device, it doesn’t have much of a problem.

At a time when video conferencing is more important than ever, owning a laptop or tablet with a suitable webcam, as we all want to look good during our meetings. Luckily, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 has one of the best webcams we’ve ever seen in a mobile computing device.

It’s a 1080p problem here, and it offers a sharp, colorful video feed even in low light, and supports Windows Hello facial recognition login. There’s also a 10MP camera on the rear, which works great, and that adds to the Pro 8’s cool features.

Performance has always been a difficult trade-off for a mobile device like the Surface Pro 8. On the one hand, you want it to be as fast as possible, but on the other hand, you don’t want to push it too hard. Battery life drains in minutes and it becomes a sore thumb to handle.

Microsoft seems to have put a lot of effort into the hardware redesign of the Surface Pro 8, which allows the company to pack a processor with a higher TDP than previous iterations of the tablet – bumping it up to 23W instead of 15W like on Surface Pro 7’s processor.

That won’t make a discernible difference, but combine that with how much faster Tiger Lake is, compared to the low-power Ice Lake chips in previous models, and you’ll get a feel for what Microsoft is doing claims to be twice the performance increase. Somehow it lives up to that bold claim.

Our review unit (model EEB-00001) comes with an 11th generation quad-core Intel Core i7-1185G7 processor and 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD storage, making it twice as fast as the Surface Pro 7 closest according to Microsoft. Whether it’s browsing the web, watching YouTube videos, or listening to Spotify, the Surface Pro 8 handles it all smoothly. The pre-installed Windows 11 operating system is a big boost to the 2-in-1’s impressive performance.

In the Geekbench 5.4 overall performance test, the Surface Pro 8 scored 5,351; this is lower than the Dell XPS 13 with a score of 5,671 and not anywhere close to the M1-powered Apple iPad Pro 2021’s score of 7,294.

Unfortunately, gaming is less than excellent on the Surface 8 Pro, but that’s completely understandable since it’s not a gaming device. Just reduce the resolution to 1440p and set the graphics to medium, you get a pretty steady 60fps.

Battery life

One of our biggest issues with the Surface Pro 7 is its battery life, which lasted a meager 3 hours and 16 minutes on the PCMark 8 battery test. Since we upgraded to PCMark 10, but Surface The Pro 8 broke that figure with 8 hours and 26 minutes, making it the device you can use at work without a charger.

This is probably largely due to Microsoft’s decision to stick to the Intel Evo program and limit the refresh rate to 60Hz by default, although it maxes out at 120Hz. Considering how portable the Surface Pro 8 is, it’s good to make sure it doesn’t run out of battery within a few hours, as the charger can add up to a massive amount of capacity.

Identify

While Microsoft intended to offer a refreshed device in its 2-in-1 lineup, they accidentally delivered a brand new device with Microsoft Surface Pro 8, like a next-gen device in every aspect. It has an exceptional display that makes watching videos enjoyable, and a powerful CPU ensures you won’t run out of power when browsing the webcam to watch videos or perform other everyday tasks. With Windows 11 pre-installed, the whole experience feels like an operating system designed specifically for the device.

Elsewhere, gaming performance on the Surface Pro 8 is lackluster and falls short of what we’d expect, and battery life doesn’t last as long as Microsoft claims (up to 16 hours). Also, the Surface Slim Pen 2 and Surface Pro accessories go great with the device, but you’ll have to spend extra on them.

Having said all that, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 despite its few shortcomings is a solid Windows 11 2-in-1 tablet that is a gratifying upgrade over the Surface Pro 7 – in fact, it’s the best Surface Pro ever released.
