Sitting in Nintendo’s office in Redwood, California, I got to know the initial details of the new OLED Switch model. It has a larger 7-inch OLED screen, an improved base, and increased internal storage, and the rest of it hasn’t changed too much. It’s not the Switch Pro we’ve all been waiting for.

However, after being on hand and experiencing more than half an hour with the game Mario Kart and Breath of the Wild. The new OLED Switch has somewhat surpassed my initial expectations. And perhaps the $350 price tag is well worth what it brings.

The most obvious change is in the display, the screen is larger and looks more vibrant than the original Switch version. Contrast and the same color are significantly improved when playing Rainbow Road in Mario Kart. I’ve been using the Switch Lite for the past year and a half in comparison. The version launched in 2019 looks a lot dimmer.

One thing that worries me is that with the larger screen size, the resolution remains the same at 720p. Images with blurred and flared edges will likely appear. But nothing seemed to be the same, so I stopped playing for a while and began to pay close attention to the details of the lawn at the Great Plateau in Breath of the wild. All very sharp, and smooth. The images are anti-aliased to a great extent. The visual experience with the 7inch OLED screen is very impressive.

The stand of this new Switch is a very significant improvement over its predecessors. In previous Switch models, users complained a lot about the fact that the stand that Nintendo put on the game console was useless. Most people have to go buy third-party accessories for a better desktop experience. Now, this will not happen again when Nintendo has made the stand more solid throughout the length of the machine. From there easily adjust the angle to suit the light in the room.

The last significant change to mention is the speaker, it is true that the sound is improved and clearer than the Switch Lite that I am using. This allows me to hold or place the device further away from my eyes and still hear what’s going on.

There are also some minor changes in the exterior design such as the ventilation fan placed below instead of behind, and the border around the screen being glossy black instead of matte black as before. The microSD card slot is located elsewhere.

I have not experienced the TV with docking mode but perhaps nothing has changed much. The new Switch’s processor remains the same, and the output resolution remains the same at 1080p. There is a big problem that most users encounter which is drifting analog joy-con, which is currently unknown. For this one, only time will tell.

In general, Nintendo has made quite noticeable improvements to its new game console. A small toy with better finishing quality. However, there are many opinions that the price of Switch OLED is not worth the lack of experience of a next-gen console. Not too much new, just a bigger and better version. This probably depends on the opinion and personal perspective of each user. We have to wait until October when the OLED Switch is officially on sale before we have much more to discuss.
