Razer isn’t known as a company that makes gaming monitors — mainly because it hasn’t made one before. The Raptor 27 gives exceptional color results, ultra-low input lag, and a unique, all- Razer design.

A smart design

In terms of design, everything about this 2560 x 1440 pixel IPS panel stands out from anything I’ve seen in the world of gaming monitors before. (It also has a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz.)

First, it’s the stand, which is both wider and heavier than any other monitor I’ve tested in this category. That’s not a bad thing, though, and it just adds to the durability and overall rugged configuration of this 11.5 kg monitor. As long as you have a sturdy table, you won’t have to witness screen wobbling during your gaming session.

The rectangular kickstand is housed in a lock with the screen’s horizontal plane, who needs to hold their keyboard at an off-angle to play effectively will be forced to move the screen back to their desk slightly to set it up for optimal multiplayer.

Next, there’s the unique back, where the stand also acts as a cable manager. The monitor’s rear panel is covered with fabric – another first in gaming monitors – and although it does take some getting used to, I’m very pleased with this option. It just has an indescribable luxury, something that needs to be seen and felt to understand.

Finally, while I’m not usually a fan of RGB lighting on gaming monitors due to its tendency to be too bright and distract from the screen, I do like the restraint Razer has shown in the department. A single subtle RGB LED strip surrounds the stand, and it reflects softly off your desk. You can program it to any custom pattern you want; it is controlled through the Razer Synapse 3 software suite.

The monitor is vertically adjustable, with a maximum distance of 13.3 cm from the bottom of the screen to the desk, and the stand supports a large tilt range: up to 90 degrees. Why so far away? Well, here comes one of the display’s best design aspects: for easy access to ports.

Because the monitor needs to place a circuit board inside, on most monitor frames, most of the video inputs and USB ports are located below the display, facing down. That can naturally make it complicated to plug the cable into the mains.

Razer’s solution to this problem? Leave the tilting screen completely flat, perpendicular to your desk. That allows all ports to face straight out and makes it easier than ever to plug in any port you need.

As for that port mix? The Raptor 27 supports just enough, with DisplayPort 1.4b and HDMI 2.0 inputs, one USB Type-C input (with DisplayPort 1.4 support and USB upstream capability), and two USB 3.0 ports. There’s no headphone jack here, which is a small disappointment but not big enough to beat the Raptor 27.

Five paths are in one direction.

With so many solid choices made in the design of the Raptor 27 chassis, I guess I wouldn’t be surprised to see Razer chose the best way to navigate through the on-screen display (OSD) menus: a five-way joystick.

Using this joystick, you can change many of the settings provided, including adjusting brightness and contrast; switch between different color modes, and enable Overspeed response time and motion blur reduction. This monitor also supports both picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture functionality, in case you’re doubling the Raptor 27 as a business or productivity monitor and want to connect multiple PCs or other video sources with it at the same time.

One catch here: Unlike on many other gaming monitors, you can’t control OSD settings through the Razer Synapse 3 software. That could change in the future (again, here’s the monitor). Razer’s first gaming monitor), but for now, if you want to change any settings, you’ll have to do it only through the OSD. At least you have a joystick.

Unexpected things

First of all, as a gaming monitor, I don’t put any heavy expectations on the color reproduction for the Raptor 27. So you can imagine my shock when the monitor started posting the color’s highest score from left to right.

The first is the sRGB result, nailing the top of the curve with a 100 percent perfect score. sRGB largely determines how well a display will handle internet-based content, and in this test, the Raptor 27 needed no help to get to the top of the list.

Next, there’s the Adobe RGB measurement, which typically tells you how well (or poorly) the display will perform when handling content creation tasks like video or photo editing or 3D modeling. Here, the screen faltered a bit, reaching 89.2% of the overall coverage. Still, it’s the highest end for a gaming monitor, if a bit low for professional monitors in this segment.

Next is the DCI-P3 test, which measures how accurately a monitor will display movies and TV show content. Razer rates the monitor at 95% of DCI-P3 coverage, and it was short-lived in our review, at 94%. Not a huge omission, and again still far above the level set by any other gaming monitor we’ve tested this year.

Then there is the brightness and contrast test, where the Raptor 27 continues to exceed expectations. While it’s only rated as an HDR400 display (with a peak brightness of 420 nits, according to the company), the display has already crossed that threshold to deliver 453 nits in HDR mode; At the same time, the SDR results are decent; a more reasonable reading is 358 nits. Against a black level of 0.27, Razer has once again surpassed its contrast ratio rating (1,000:1) to deliver a contrast ratio of 1,678:1.

Finally, using our HDFury 4K Diva to test input lag. We recorded a near-record input-latency time – as low as just 1.7 milliseconds, making the Raptor 27 feel like a pain Bear with the HP Omen X 25f and just short of our record holder to date, the MSI Optix MPG341CQR, with a result of 1.4ms.

Basic test

As I do with every gaming monitor, I put the Razer Raptor 27 through its paces for a few rounds of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to test the acceleration, adaptive sync, and reduced features. How good the motion blur adds to my multiplayer experience. Here, I found no issues with screen tearing or lag, and the display is well equipped to do what it’s supposed to: get your gaming at 144Hz as fast as your finger and convulsive response allows you.

We tested AMD’s FreeSync and Nvidia’s G-Sync adaptive sync technology on the Razer Raptor 27, using both an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti card, and in each case, the display. No signs of tearing or slowing the action. According to Razer, this console supports AMD’s FreeSync, but Nvidia has also designated the Raptor 27 as G-Sync Compatible. (It doesn’t have Nvidia’s dedicated G-Sync circuitry inside, but it operates functionally identical to those of monitors with the full “G-Sync Certified” badge.)

The HDR video test is also great. While the 27-inch is a bit small for the screen, I’d recommend watching most of my movies on; it can still be temporarily subpar for a larger HDR TV while playing a suitable game; it is really necessary.

Razer!

Razer has a bit of a reputation in the gaming community. Depending on which side of the Razer fence you put your foot on, the company’s products tend to be all successes or mostly failures.

Even though I’m a passionate PC gamer, I haven’t purchased a Razer product in over a decade. But if the Raptor 27 is the kind of accessory I missed out on, it’s a huge regret on my part. Given that this is the first gaming monitor Razer has produced, I didn’t expect the world to be without this monitor, which is why I was more than amazed when I saw a timer for the first time. Works far beyond other monitors. Razer burst out with spectacular gaming monitors here, showing that the company listens to gamers.

At $699, the monitor is right near the bottom of what you should spend on a monitor with similar specs at 27-inch screen size. But for me, it’s worth it. With a functional design, stunning color results, and smooth gaming performance, the Raptor 27 goes above. It may be Razer’s first (and only) gaming monitor to date. Still, suppose the company continues to maintain this level of quality and innovation with future monitors. In that case, this will be the only monitor in the industry figure in a series of awards.
