The Redmi Buds 6 maintain their design through their charging case which keeps its rectangular form that allows users to open and close the case with its smooth and quiet functioning lid. The case features a matte finish for its top and bottom sections while its side edges display a glossy appearance.

The case front displays the USB-C charging port together with the status LED indicator. The LED strip displays battery level through a series of left-to-right lights that show the remaining battery power and the current charging state. The case contains the pairing button which users can find on its rightside border. The object appears to disappear into the existing side casing because its design matches that of the original structure.

The earbuds present a new design which maintains the existing glossy strip on their outer-facing edge. The design elements of the AirPods Pro remain present throughout the rest of the device which includes all components except for the viewable area from the interior. The earbuds possess an IP54 rating which protects against dust and splash damage. The charging case does not have this protective feature.

The earbuds become completely invisible when users wear them because they deliver outstanding comfort for our ears. The design allows users to remove and insert the device into their ears without creating pressure in their inner ear area which enables comfortable use of the device throughout multiple hours.

Software

The Redmi Buds 6 are compatible with the Xiaomi Earbuds app available on the Android and iOS app stores. Through the app, we can control features such as sound effects, gestures, and also select active noise cancellation (ANC) mode or fine-tune individual options.

Unfortunately, the app still has some annoying flaws. There’s a huge banner ad for a free three-month Spotify subscription that can’t be removed. Furthermore, the subscription isn’t even available when clicked. The app also requires you to log in to your Xiaomi account to update the firmware on the earbuds, which is an added nuisance. The app also switches to full-screen mode on Android phones for no reason, which hides the status bar at the top. And finally, there’s the alignment issue with the ANC buttons, as the middle button isn’t even centered.

The Xiaomi Earbuds app offers sound settings, including four sound settings and an 8-band custom EQ. There’s also a surround sound feature, similar to Spatial Audio, which works with any source.

If you pair the earbuds with a Xiaomi phone, you don’t need to install the app as the options are built into the Bluetooth settings. However, things are slightly different here compared to the app.

While most features are the same, the app has a personalized sound feature instead of standard EQ or custom EQ presets. This allows you to listen to audio clips and select your preferred sound to create a custom profile. However, during our testing, the profiles created after calibration consistently sounded very different from what we heard beforehand, making this feature almost useless.

These options are also tied to the sound settings on Xiaomi phones. If you have Atmos enabled on your phone, these options will be unavailable in the Bluetooth settings for no apparent reason. Additionally, if you select “Native Sound” in your phone’s settings, the sound options will be available in the headphone settings, but in reality, they won’t have any effect as mentioned above. We had to enable the Xiaomi Sound effect on the phone for the headphone settings to take effect, all of which can be unnecessarily confusing and complicated.

Overall, the software experience here isn’t very good, and both the Xiaomi Earbuds app and the native experience on Xiaomi phones need improvement in future updates.

Sound Quality

The Redmi Buds 6 use a dual-driver system which includes a 12.4mm titanium-coated dynamic driver that produces mid-bass sounds and a 5.5mm piezoelectric driver that generates high-frequency sounds. The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.4 for wireless connection which allows them to play audio through both SBC and AAC codecs.

We’ll start by discussing sound quality with ANC off, and then you’ll see why. The Redmi Buds 6 offer good sound quality through their ANC off mode which also provides adjustable sound settings that require no additional effort to set up.

The overall sound signature features a forward-leaning mid-bass which produces strong bass tones that maintain their warmth without becoming too loud. The midrange showed us strong performance which allowed the singer to deliver complete vocal sounds with accurate tonal reproduction. The high frequencies of sound produce a loss of brightness which makes details appear less pronounced. Although we expected the piezoelectric drivers to improve performance the system fails to use its dual-driver system properly in its default operating mode.

The Redmi Buds 6 provide balanced audio performance which enables users to enjoy various music styles and different types of media content.

The activation of ANC creates a drastic change in sound which results in an artificial tonal experience that sounds completely unfamiliar. The sound appears to have increased compression while the bass tones present a hollow quality. The sound becomes complete and transparent with enhanced spatial dimension when ANC is disabled.

The testing process demonstrated that the activation of ANC and EQ and personalized sound features always produced sounds that sounded more synthetic and had inferior tonal characteristics. The audio processing system used by Xiaomi fails to produce effective results because its system lacks necessary advanced technology and its chipset system operates below required real-time processing speeds. The sound from these earbuds is at its best when all effects and features are disabled. The Transparency mode exists as the sole exception which maintains good sound quality when it is activated.

Microphone

The Redmi Buds 6 have very good microphone performance. The testing process evaluated voice quality in a silent area which showed that voices produced clear natural sound without any visible noise reduction effects. The testing process showed that people could still understand spoken words which resulted in effective voice comprehension despite the loud sounds present in the environment.

Noise Cancellation

The Redmi Buds 6 provide exceptional noise cancellation abilities which exceed typical performance for products within this price category. The earbuds successfully completed most tests which used common household sounds that included fans and air conditioners and air purifiers. The product only has one limitation which prevents it from reducing high-frequency sounds, which allows certain sounds like running water and particular machinery noise to pass through.

The Redmi Buds 6 show poor performance when they need to block wind sounds. The earbuds need more time to adjust to high winds which exceeds the duration needed by other earbuds and they require the same period to restore their normal function after the wind stops.

The Redmi Buds 6 Transparency mode provides an adjustable system which enables you to create your own Voice and Ambient Sound and Balance mode settings. The Voice mode does not effectively show nearby voices because it does not meet our expectations and the Balance mode produces a distorted sound because it blocks certain frequencies while allowing other sounds to come through. The Ambient Sound mode appears to be the most effective of the three choices which we will use as our main option.

Latency

The Redmi Buds 6 produce high latency problems which exist from their initial installation. The Xiaomi phones benefit from low-latency mode which improves performance although users cannot adjust this feature through the Xiaomi Earbuds application on non-Xiaomi devices.

Connectivity

The Redmi Buds 6 maintain solid connectivity performance while their users experience no problems during the pairing process. The earbuds enable users to connect with two devices at once and they function correctly when listening to both devices together. You can connect your earbuds to both your phone and laptop which lets you use your phone app to manage audio settings while your laptop plays audio.

Battery Life

The Redmi Buds 6 have a claimed battery life of 10 hours with ANC off and 6.5 hours with ANC on

The company also claims a 10-minute charge from a completely empty battery provides 4 hours of playback with ANC off

The Redmi Buds 6 test results showed 10 hours and 28 minutes of playback time when they played back audio without ANC during standardized testing which exceeded the expected performance. The earbuds operated for 3 hours and 56 minutes when tested with a 10-minute charge from a completely empty battery which almost matched the expected performance. The Redmi Buds 6 headphones provide users extended battery life during their usage period.

Conclusion

The Redmi Buds 6 are an affordable pair of earbuds The headphone package includes comfortable design features which provide decent sound reproduction when ANC is disabled and users receive excellent microphone performance together with effective active noise cancelling technology and outstanding battery performance.

The sound quality becomes unacceptable when users enable ANC while the software interface contains multiple problems and the audio latency remains unsatisfactory because users need Xiaomi phones to access the low-latency feature.

Some issues become easier to ignore when the product price drops below $40. Users deserve access to sound quality that matches the headphones primary features but we expect Xiaomi to correct this problem through future updates that will improve ANC sound quality.
