Design

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is huge. While that’s clear from the packaging and the fact that it’s a 49-inch screen, it only catches your eye when you take it out of the box and are ready to put it on your desk. If you have a small desk space, this does not apply, this is large and it needs enough desk space. The sheer size can be intimidating at first, but that size comes in handy if you need an immersive gaming experience.

As you sit in front of the Odyssey Neo G9 and play a game – maybe Cyberpunk 2077 – the game takes up almost your entire field of view, drawing you closer to the moment. You don’t get any distractions unless you want them to, but if you need to immerse yourself, the wide field of view will do wonders.

The screen doesn’t have the thinnest bezels around, they’re visible on the sides and top, but the bottom is more obvious. However, that’s not a big deal daily, thanks to the large size of the screen. The only logo you’ll find on the front of the Neo G9 is the Nvidia G-Sync logo, don’t want to be there – funnily enough, the monitor has G-Sync.

Like its predecessor, the LS49AG952NNXZA has a slightly centered key/button combo at the bottom of the screen. It allows you to interact with the on-screen menu, where you can adjust most aspects of the screen such as brightness and contrast. Besides the joystick, there are three recessed buttons that you can use to save specific settings for up to three different games, which is useful if you keep switching between different types of games.

While the front of the display doesn’t look like much, the back looks great, pretty much the same as last year’s model. It’s a beautiful colorway with some nice designs etched into it. Samsung has finally brought back the RGB circle around where the click stand is at the back.

Cable management is a priority as they all go into a small compartment at the bottom of the screen, and you also get a large plastic control panel so you can slide in where all the cables go enter. It supports standard VESA-compatible mounts, but the large weight of the monitor will require a sturdy stand/stand to handle it.

The connectivity options are useful, but not the best, we’ve seen better on monitors that cost much less. This monitor has two USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-B cable (used for USB pass-through), two HMI 2.1 ports, and one DisplayPort. Samsung includes both an HDMI 2.1 cable and a DisplayPort cable, but if you want to take advantage of the b240Hz refresh rate, you’ll have to use HDMI 2.1, as the refresh rate will be limited to 120Hz over DP.

Just a little disappointing to have such limited input on such a great gaming monitor. Remember, one of the coolest things about this monitor is its ability to emulate two 27-inch 1440p monitors, which means it makes more sense to connect a variety of devices. For example, it would be nice to connect the PS5, which has some extra ports for the PC, and also connects the Nintendo Switch, so you can better swap all those devices. Well, maybe Samsung will look into that in next year’s model.

We can’t overstate how impressive this gaming monitor is, but it’s full of firsts in the widescreen gaming segment. With the Neo G9, Samsung somehow doubled the peak brightness per 1,000 nits of last year’s model to 2,000 in this model. That gives it an HDR 2000 rating, which is the best HDR you’ll find outside of PC gaming on a high-end OLED TV.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 has a 5,120 x 1,440 display, usually 4K. Even if you’re going to use this monitor with a gaming PC equipped with an NVidia GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card, there won’t be many games hitting 120fps on this monitor, much less 240. For example, mid-range gaming monitors like Deathloop typically hover around 110 fps, sometimes dropping to 100 or 90 fps. That’s a really fast frame rate, don’t get us wrong, but there’s still a long way to go to be able to take advantage of this monitor’s full potential.
