In addition to IronWolf for home and small office networking, Seagate is also introducing its IronWolf Pro drive to data centers, enterprise storage systems. Highlights of the product are good load bearing capacity, high reliability compared to other hard disk drives. In addition, the IronWolf Pro 10TB helps users better resolve large volumes of structured data, improve density and increase resource utilization rates in system management.

Basic technical parameter

Design standard: 3.5 inches.

Capacity: 10TB.

Communication: SATA 3.0.

Rotational speed: 7,200 rpm.

Reliability: 1.2 million hours of use.

Load capacity: 300 TB per year.

Featured Technology: AgileArray, Recovery service.

Power consumption: 4.42 – 6.8W.

Design

IronWolf Pro still uses the standard 3.5-inch form factor with capacities ranging from 2TB to 10TB, and SATA 3.0 interface offers more options for users. Product design for enterprise-class NAS (network attached storage) is more bearable and reliable than the desktop hard drive.

Specifically, the product’s durability is about 1.2 million hours with the same load capacity of up to 300 terabytes per year. Compared to the IronWolf model, the load capacity is only 180 terabytes and its durability is about 1 million hours of use. For you to imagine the MTBF (mean time between failures), ie the average number of hours between failures. This is a statistical measure to predict the failure rate of a hard drive or SSD. The calculation is usually made on 1,000 hard drives to record the average number of hours between each failure.

Of course, these are just reference numbers, but you can use comparisons to see the different uses of each product line. The greater the MTBF value, the more reliable the system. Thus, it is used as an indicator for reliability (“R” in RASIS).

One issue that needs to be addressed is the vibration, especially in multi-drive NAS systems like the QNAP TS-451A used in the test model. With IronWolf Pro, Seagate is also equipped with AgileArray technology to optimize the performance of hard drives in the NAS environment. This technology has the ability to automatically adjust the balance of the dual-plane balance, incorporating a rotational vibration sensor that monitors the linearity of the vibration of the hard drive to avoid damage caused by vibration during operation 24/7.

Structurally, there are seven discs stacked on top of each other and 14 read heads move across the disk surface horizontally to read / write data on each cluster. According to Seagate, IronWolf Pro uses traditional PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) technology. However, the data access speed of the product can reach 200 MB / s, the random access time from 5 to 8ms and this is also the highest speed of traditional hard disk drive today.

In addition, Seagate uses helium instead of air to cool discs inside IronWolf Pro, reducing vibration in data retrieval and heat dissipation.

Included is a free Seagate Recovery Services (SRS) data recovery package for the first 2 years of use. This saves users peace of mind, avoids data loss in case of accidental deletion, hard drive virus infection or even malfunction in natural disasters.

Performance evaluation

To test the performance of IronWolf Pro, I set up a simple networking system for data sharing between the QNAP TS-451A and the external SSDs, the Samsung T3 in RAID 0 and RAID 1. Note the tests. Below is a review of the hard drive’s data access capabilities, but not all of its features, especially its durability, stability and consistency throughout 24/7.

The results below show that IronWolf Pro’s data access speeds are nearly double that of traditional 3.5-inch hard drives. Even in terms of reading speed, it can compare the same number of popular SSDs we tested.

Specifically, in the attempt to replicate 10GB of composite data between the Samsung T3 and TS-451A running in RAID 0 mode, the test configuration took about 1 minute 14 seconds to complete the data copy at an average write speed is 138.4 MB / s. In the reverse operation, 10GB of data from hard disk drive to SSD is significantly faster, taking just 1 minute 2 seconds with average reading speed of IronWolf Pro is 165.2 MB / s.

Similar to a single 10GB file, the Seagate hard drive takes only 52 seconds at an average speed of 196.9 MB / s and takes 41 seconds to burn data to SSDs at read speeds of up to 249.8 MB. /S. Compared to the aggregate data retrieval task, the write speed is 42.3% faster and the reading speed is 51.2% faster.

The latter is a basic RAID in which data is written to both identical hard disks. In case one of the hard drives is damaged, the remaining drive will continue to operate, ensuring user data security. With the above configuration, I realized that IronWolf Pro’s data access speed decreased slightly but was not significantly lower than that of RAID 0.
