SMOKIN BUDS

Recently, Skullcandy has launched a series of new products including two completely opposite extremes: Crusher ANC 2 headphones are the latest version of the company’s flagship line of active noise-canceling headphones, and Smokin Buds is the ‘youngest brother’ – a pair of True Wireless headphones positioned at an accessible price range. Despite the low price, Smokin Buds still retain the ‘quality’ of Skullcandy and will definitely please fans of the ‘skull’ brand.

The case of this pair of headphones is very small, with two main colors: black and neon green.

The front introduces a few features of the headphones including 20 hours of use (with charging case), IPX4 water resistance and is made of 50% recycled plastic – an effort by Skullcandy to protect the living environment.

The inner box packaging also aims to protect the environment when rubber cushions are placed in paper boxes instead of plastic bags.

All accessories in the box include a short USB type-C charging cable and 2 rubber cushions.

Both the rubber mattress and the strap are ‘private’ products with Skullcandy’s logo – a very commendable tradition of the ‘skull’ company.

My first impression is that the headset’s charging box is quite small, the volume is very close to the Apple AirPods pair. Because the charging box is small, the headphones do not have an outstanding usage time (20 hours), but will comfortably use for 3-4 days before needing to be charged. In addition, there is fast charging technology to continue using 2 hours with only 10 minutes of charging.

The box has a quite unique design as the lid opens upward, cutting diagonally across the box rather than sliding straight. The good thing about this design is that it helps users easily take the headphones out of the box, but still has strong enough magnets to not let the headphones fall to the ground.

Coming to the headphones, Skullcandy Smokin Buds are designed in the form of a tail, but the tail will protrude and run straight through the body of the headset, unlike Apple AirPods.

The outside of the headset has a touch screen, which helps control music, volume and receive/reject incoming calls.

As mentioned, the headphones have an IPX4 water resistance standard to prevent damage when splashed with water, and are resistant to the user’s sweat when worn for exercise but will not be immersed in water.

As a wireless headset at an accessible price range, Smokin Buds is unfortunately not equipped with ANC active noise cancellation. However, the headphones are reasonably designed, giving good fit, so the natural noise canceling ability is also quite good. I used it in an office with a lot of keyboard and talking noise, but Smokin Buds still blocked it effectively, not causing distraction while working.

How is the sound quality of this pair of headphones?

Smokin Buds possesses Skullcandy’s signature sound style at the present time, which is still vibrant and powerful due to a lot of bass but does not boost the treble to avoid unpleasant glare. This is the sound quality for those whose music taste ranges from basshead to ‘mixed’ listening. It will not be too suitable for gentle music with a lot of vocals but still not too ‘out of tune’.

The most prominent sound range is none other than the bass range, there is always a prominent playing position in the sound quality of Smokin Buds. Try the song No days off by Wxrdie, the intense bass sounds are clearly expressed by Smokin Buds, focusing more on the mid bass but also reaching the sub bass range so it doesn’t feel like it’s (bloated) uncomfortable. As mentioned, this is not the most optimal pair of headphones for vocal songs, because the bass is already powerful enough to take over the performance of the singer’s voice.

The mid and treble ranges follow the same motif: thick, warm and slightly backward so that the bass range is best expressed. The voices of Pentatonix group members are bold, thick and warm and tend to be more relaxed than bright and straight forward. The high-mid and treble sections do not reach the highest frequencies, so the sibilance phenomenon will never occur, but that is also the reason why female singers’ voices, or instruments that need brightness such as guitars and violins, will Lacks a bit of ‘sharpness’.

This does not greatly affect Pop, Rap, and Dance songs because the singer’s voice will also have a little autotune to become more prominent. As in the song My head & My heart, Ava Max’s voice still harmonizes with the surrounding beat, creating a vibrant and explosive atmosphere while still clearly hearing what the singer is singing.

Not too modern but has ‘Skullcandy quality’

Skullcandy is now much more ‘modern’ than before, integrating a series of new technologies for its expensive products. Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds is not among these as it lacks two technologies that Skullcandy often uses: active noise cancellation ANC and Tile search chip. However, when using this pair of headphones, we can still see the ‘Skullcandy quality’ in the exterior design and especially its rich, rich sound quality. With a selling price of only about $30, we can hardly ask for more!
