amazon Sony MDR XB950BT reviews
The Sony MDR-XB950BT is a great choice for those who love to dance or EDM with high-pitched bass, or use Bluetooth and do not be afraid to carry a large size headset with you.
– Advantage:
Ear cushions soft, noise-resistant
Long battery life
Fast NFC support
Bass thick, strong
– Disadvantages:
Plastic cover
Bass Boost slightly over other bands
Design
After a few days of use, I just found one minus point, the only small surface that is easy to grip fingerprints and hard to clean, the rest of the XB950BT nothing to criticize about design, whether This slightly nostalgic style may not be suitable for many users’ tastes.
The controls of the XB950BT are located in a very reasonable position, allowing users to manipulate easily with just two thumbs, metal headband is high elasticity, placed on the head quietly, not offensive. XB950BT has a difference compared to the other models in the same line that does not fold into the compact and only rotate, easily into the bag or briefcase but still takes up a lot of space.
Function
The XB950BT supports both line-in and Bluetooth 4.0 (with aptX), but some features will be limited to users with a 3.5mm jack, such as a controller, a microphone for voice Or Bass Boost. This is a rather shortage of quirks, especially the controller and microphone that is extremely necessary when used with smartphones.
When connected via Bluetooth, the features that are “unlocked” include the Bass Booster, music controls, volume, microphone and NFC. I personally highly appreciate that Sony always brings NFC to its wireless products, as it reduces the waiting time to just a few seconds and is also compatible with many types of products today.
To enable the XB950BT, users simply hold down the power key for a few seconds, keeping it longer to switch to Bluetooth standby. The Bass Boost key is getting bigger, sinking closer to the power button of the Sony Xperia XZ. The Joystick music player is easy to use but feels a bit tight, and the volume buttons are similar to smartphones.
There is one thing I do not like about using the XB950BT, as it does not tell the user whether it’s connected to a particular device or not with audio, so it takes me more time to check it again on phone or computer.
Sound quality
Identifying the “big brother” of the Extra Bass headphones, the XB950BT delivers impressive bass and volume in both passive and active modes. Furthermore, unlike the juniors, the XB950BT’s bass strips do not dominate the other two bands, keeping the detail and smoothness needed for the music. The XB950BT’s advantage lies in its own dedicated Bass Boost button, allowing users to choose whether they want to hear more bass, which is useful if you listen to more music than just Dance or EDM.
The difference between turning on and off the Bass Boost is clear, when the bass volume is several times higher than normal, emphasizing the Bass Guitar sound and the drum, making the listener want to “enjoy” right away. However, a little bit of low-mid is affected if the Bass Boost is activated, sometimes causing the vocals to be affected, especially with the male voice of Troy Sivan’s FOOLS or The Chainsmokers Closer.
When off the Bass Boost, the XB950BT’s strings are quite balanced, still emphasizing the bass but the mid and treb are perfectly responsive to the ballads or pop, soul so deep. Treble sounds are not as good as other “normal” headsets, but they are not compressed or disappear in both Bass modes, while the midrange is still harmonious, smooth to tone up. The biggest minus of MDR XB950BT probably lies in the not too wide range of sound, which is a bit of a mystery in some cases.
Pin
Sony promised about 20 hours of battery life for the MDR XB950BT, but in my tests the numbers were a bit skewed, or Sony experimented with low volume and turned off Bass Boost.
With average volume, I can hear about 17 – 18 hours in the Bass Boost mode before it runs out of battery, ie, if listening to music through Bluetooth ~ 2 hours per day, you have to recharge for 1 week. Listen once on charging time, you will need about four hours to fully charge the XB950BT, but this does not affect the experience too much, because anyway its battery life is still very impressive then.
Safes
MDR XB950BT can not be the best, but it’s not bad at all, at least compared to other bass players. Adding a shortcut to the Bass Boost is a big plus, as it allows the user to choose, and has good battery life, soft ear cushions, solid build and midrange sound. Better than other products in the Sony XB series.
