One year ago, when the MDR-1000x flagship was released at IFA 2016, Sony did not expect that their wireless headset to be so successful. The big japanese company continues to introduce the upgraded WH-1000XM2 with the slogan ‘Smarter noise canceling’. Exclusive noise canceling features like Ambient Sound, Personal NC Optimizer, Quick Attention are all optimized by Sony, beside the Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing technology on this new version.

The WH-1000XM2’s design does not have much of a difference with the preveous one MDR-1000X: stylish, bol, high-tech metal frame incorporates smooth leather covering the two earbuds, The smallest details are carefully perfected, with no minor errors. The WH-1000X’s earcup looks pretty simple – but this is where the latest technology in this headset converges. The first is a sensor that allows the user to control by touch: increase the volume, transfer messages, receive calls with just a few touches on the housing of the headset.

Still the familiar features of the previous version have, now it been upgraded with quicker, responsive and accurate swiping. Swipe up and down to increase or decrease the volumn, swipe to switch songs, double tap to Play/Pause or receive calls – simple and smart.

‘Quick Attenton’ – a technology based on the sensor in the ear-cup, quick turn on/off noise canceling when hans are covered on the headphone. Help you talk to your friends or listen to your surroundings without the need to take off the WH-1000X. After the conversation is stopped and your hands are down, the music will play back and the previous noise canceling  will be restored – very convenient.

Last but not least, the Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing – a feature that Sony developed specifically for frequent travel by airplane. Developed based on the Presonal NC Optimizer technology in its preveous version, the headphone analyzes air pessure based on the sensor system, along with the external microphones in the ear, and then refines the noise- canceling effect make the most comfortable feeling for the user during each long flight.

Another change from the previous version that the WH-1000XM2 has just two control buttons: power on/off and noise-canceling (NC). So the Ambient Sound button on the MDR-1000X has been integrated into the NC on/off button, when activate will reduce the noise- canceling by 50 percent, allowing the user to hear the sound from the surroundings.

Put the modern technology aside, the experience it brings is prefect: headband with soft quilt, earcup is wrapped with soft leather, inside is airy sponges, doesn’t feel uncomfortable for the first 3 hours with the WH-1000XM2.

The noise-canceling of the WH-1000XM2 is also improved compared to the previous model, without having to turn on the music, the space around it has become much quieter just wearing headphones. When it started, the microphone system on the ear-cup determines the ambient noise as well as the pressure in the ear-cup, from which the system will process to produce reverse-phase sound waves to eliminate the noise without feeling uncomfortable.

Although this noise-canceling system works perfectly but users still can improve by using Sony’s Headphones Connect app. App are available on both iOS and Android allow you to control noise, noise filtering and tweaking for each environment.

The battery life of the Sony WH-1000XM2 is impressive, compared to the same range from Beats or Bose. This wireless headphone can operate continuously for 40 hours (with cable) and 30 hours (wireless) – clearly different when the number on the MDR-1000X is only 20 hours. In additon, the WH-1000XM2 is also equipped Quick Charging feature – charging 10 minutes, listening to 70 minutes – really useful for user moving a lot.
