When the Apple iPhone 7 came out, people started to pay more attention to Bluetooth headphones, and the Westone Bluetooth cable is one of the rare solutions for true audiophiles.

Audio players rarely trust Bluetooth connectivity. But what has to come will also come; after Apple, many smartphone manufacturers are “threatening” t

o soon abandon the traditional 3.5mm port. We only have two solutions: using DAC/amplifier via Lightning/USB port or Bluetooth headset.

The Bluetooth headset solution is inherently more popular with general users because of its high convenience. But with new technologies, the sound quality is not bad. The combination of the aptX (and possibly aptX HD) codec and Bluetooth 4.0 or later is considered capable of transmitting the equivalent of a CD’s content, which is considered a standard with audiophiles worldwide.

Westone Bluetooth Cable is one of the products that I spend the most time trying out in the past. Because this is one of the very strange items compared to the usual concept, this can be considered an upgrade or change in style is not wrong.

Most who are interested in this product already have one or several quite satisfactory headphones, and now there is a need to add Bluetooth connectivity only. But of course, the amplifier built into this signal wire is also of equal or significantly better quality than most smartphones today.

That said, it doesn’t mean that Westone Bluetooth Cable is the perfect solution for me. As a signal wire, but the wire core that Westone uses is only at an intermediate level to optimize the cost factor. Still, the fact is that they also do not publish any specific information about the wire core like other cables. Manufacturer of other signal cables. I think the signal wire core will be similar to Westone’s standard EPIC line of cables. Of course, the price also reflects that it has not been brought to a high-end level, suitable for pairing with headphones that cost about $450 or less.

The design of this Bluetooth cord is quite reasonable; the circuit, controller, and battery are evenly distributed in weight on both sides, so the feeling of wearing on the neck is relatively comfortable but still has enough weight to hold the product dropped unexpectedly.

Using a flat wire in the middle makes the product anti-tangle; while the wire at the top is round, it can be worn around the ear or straight as usual. There is a button in the middle of the wire to easily adjust the wire’s length, increasing the grip on the tip if needed. This little feature comes in handy when doing sports, especially relevant when this product is IPX4 waterproof.

A big plus for this product is that the battery life is quite close to the manufacturer’s announced number. In the last test, a full charge got me about 7.5 hours of continuous use. Charging through the laptop’s USB port also takes less than 2 hours.

If in an open space, a Bluetooth connection can reach a distance of 8-9 meters. But it should be noted that the stability of the connection is quite good. One of the rare headsets that don’t have trouble listening with my HP Elitebook laptop, which has a very bad Bluetooth connection.

Westone originally designed this signal wire for its headphones, so there is only the standard MMCX connector. So, I used the Westone W60 headset in this article, once considered the top product of the universal in-ear group before the W80 was launched not long ago.

With the W60, I was able to tell the difference whether the source supported the aptX codec or not, thanks to the significantly more subtle change in the treble range. To make the most of this signal wire, perhaps you should pay attention to using a source with aptX; here, I use the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (because the iPhone does not support this codec). The built-in amplifier power is also higher than that of my main smartphone, the Apple iPhone 5S.

The change of W60 when using standard EPIC signal wire and Bluetooth Cable also has a change. It’s not hard to tell that the physical wire still has a slightly better sound quality than Bluetooth in this case. The most obvious effect is that the soundstage is slightly narrowed, the dynamics are reduced slightly, and the sub-bass is not as deep. Sometimes, the sound tends to be warmer, but the clarity is not lost impact. When watching movies, I noticed that the sound has a certain delay, quite small, compared to the picture. That will not affect the experience when listening to music.

Although the Westone doesn’t offer a great experience, it does its job well by adding Bluetooth features without losing sound quality, which is completely acceptable. I still think that this is a good and most convenient option to use with Apple iPhone 7.
