The highlight of the Zune HD is the slim, compact design, personality thanks to the solid lines on the body. When placed next to the Apple iPod Touch, Zune HD is smaller, softer. Though not as big as the iPod Touch, the Zune HD screen uses OLED organic light-emitting technology for brighter and sharper images.
Both are handy touch pads, which allow your fingers to glide across the screen for control. The touchpad is streamlined to a minimum, as Zune HD has a power button at the top, the Home button below the LCD and a button on the right to turn on the song and enter the volume control.
Microsoft never seems to be right with computer and entertainment machines when designing sophisticated software updates. The Zune 4.0 software has to go through many steps, not just as a click away. The installation process is longer, but when done it is really great.
The main menu is quite interesting, including three categories: Pins, History and New. To put a “pin” on the mark, you just press and hold long on photos, songs or movies, they will always be there; History will save the latest activity; New includes either purchased or synchronized data.
The audio experience on Zune HD is quite similar to the iPod in that it is not customizable. You have an equalizer setting before, but the machine does not have a custom EQ for the handy user, as in the Sony Walkman X. The best new music feature on the Zune is the ability to buy songs online. Instead of typing the name of the song on the virtual keyboard, you can also go to the Top Albums, New Releases to see the “hot” or recently released. The FM radio on Zune is a strong point because it supports both normal and HD signals, making the sound much sharper.

The video looks beautiful on Zune’s OLED display. If you use an HD plug, buy videos on the Marketplace, and hook up to a high-definition TV, the picture looks better. One thing to explain here is that the name Zune HD can make people think that it is a device that performs HD resolution on the screen right now, but it only shows HD when connected to a PC or TV with HD plug feet. The HD here is only for HD audio.
With mobile browsing capabilities, users are easy to use and speed. The browser is a special edition of Internet Explorer Mobile, as good as the browser on the iPod Touch. Although it does not support Flash, it displays very impressive websites.
In terms of speed, both seem to balance the load of web pages. No player on the famous systems of Archos, Somy or Samsung can bring the web browsing feel as attractive as on Zune HD.
Over the years Zune is still considered to be behind the iPod, but with the arrival of the Zune HD, Microsoft has proved to be an aging device in the entertainment industry. Only one thing to complain about is the application market for Zune HD will need more variety of software to attract users to explore.
