The Alienware AW3420DW is a great Ultrawide monitor for both work and play. As expansion panels become popular and some become more affordable, you can now multitask and get the most out of your PC like never before.

Last year’s Alienware AW3418DW was our favorite of the whole year, our review model seeks to make gaming more enjoyable thanks to its high resolution (3,440 x 1,440), responsiveness and responsiveness. Short (2ms) and timeless design. Plus, it has premium RGB lighting and convenient menus that are pretty good to use.

Design

Alienware recently refreshed its game portfolio designs, and the AW3420DW showcases the company’s new Legend design, like the Alienware Area-51m and 15m flagship laptops, and the same aesthetic language adopted found on the high-end Aurora R9 desktop.

The back of the display stand is a masterpiece of design, featuring an accented oval RGB light ring with an RGB header engraved on the back of the monitor. While you can’t really justify the idea of putting the lighting effect on the back of the screen, not that you would look at it every day, but it does create some bountiful lighting effects on the wall behind it.

On the right side of the screen is where you find all the buttons. You get a small bar that lets you open the full settings menu, there are also three other buttons around the back that you can use to access some quick settings or navigate the main menu. Additionally, you can control the RGB lighting through the Alienware Control Center software, available after you connect the monitor to your PC via USB.

Finally, in terms of design, Alienware did a great job with the bezels. They’re not so thick, in fact, they’re less noticeable but they’re definitely there. All of these follow the refreshed Alienware designs we’ve seen in recent years, but we just wish they’d narrowed the bezels here.

After all, Alienware is owned by Dell, and if they can have an infinity display on their high-end laptop line, why should its high-end gaming monitor have to have some thick bezels?

The Gates

All gates are protected by a light shield that easily slides in and out. Here you find power, HDMI, and DisplayPort on the right side of the stand, and on the opposite side there are two USB-A ports, plus a special USB port for connecting the monitor to your PC for lighting control. It’s the same port that allows the rest of the USB ports on the display.

There are additional ports at the bottom of the display, including a quick-access USB-A port and a headphone jack. This small space is also illuminated, making it easy to plug in peripherals, even in a dark room. You’ll love the many USB ports here, but they can’t be many to satisfy all of our needs.

However, for a monitor as expensive as this, being limited to just a pair of two monitor inputs is a bit too impressive. We at least expect a second DisplayPort, and better yet, even a USB-C connector.

First things first, the Alienware AW3420DW looks sleek and that’s indisputable. Whatever you’ll be viewing on the screen, be it your latest work spreadsheet or game, this display simply exudes class.

Playing the Resident Evil 2 remake is fun as the screen makes the zombies – the slow, shaky, groaning kind – come back amazingly. You’re easily lost in the bloodied flesh tumbling down, and the somersaults through the broken windows and down from the darkness are made more vivid than before. And in a game that’s definitely opposite in tone and color taste, the Scavenger looks fantastic, with all of them blue and fluid in motion. Simply put, no matter what game you throw at this screen, it looks amazing.

Incredible gaming performance is not only due to the 120Hz refresh rate, but it’s been pushed down to just 2ms, meaning even the fastest online games won’t be hindered by a ordinary screen. Here, you get great picture quality and fast performance – all you have to deal with is the high price.

Beyond its gaming capabilities, the Alienware AW3420DW is a G-Sync console that makes a lot of sense at such a high resolution. In some games like Metro Exodus, you’ll get around 50fps, but thanks to G-Sync, everything feels like you’re playing at the original frame rate. G-Sync, as long as you have a compatible Nvidia graphics card, is basically the same as cheating and it’s the way we all love it.

When not gaming, this monitor will allow you to do some side work. With Ultrawide resolution, you can open two large browser windows side-by-side without having to switch to an alternate tab on your PC. You really save a lot of time, and at this point we easily recommend Ultrawide monitors to anyone who normally has a lot of work to do on their computer.

All in all, the AW3420DW is a super-powerful premium Ultrawide monitor that delivers superb picture quality – even if the hefty price tag makes most users shop on a tight budget. More affordable 34-inch alternatives include the LG 34GL750-B and the ASUS ROG Swift PG349Q, which, for sure, you’ll spend less but forfeit the high resolution and short response time – respectively – with one of two alternatives. So if you want the best of the best and don’t mind the price, the Alienware AW3420DW makes a convincing claim for itself.

Conclusion

The 34-inch AW3420DW seems like a desirable Ultrawide monitor on paper, and it lives up to its ethos as one of the best gaming monitors available with its high resolution, resounding color accuracy and premium design. The limits and railings here are about the price, but it’s worth every penny, as we haven’t seen some of our favorite PC games look quite as good as they do here.
