The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S in this review has been around $200 more than the model from last year, so yeah it’s not exactly subtle. For that extra money, it gets you Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30 Series “Ampere” graphics, and honestly that change feels worth it because it bumps gaming performance in a noticeable way.

A lot of what we liked in last year’s Predator Helios 300 is still here, and we kinda keep the same recommendation to stick with this base model: the feature set fits this price better and the RTX 3060 should land pretty close to the performance you’d see from the pricier Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH317-54-70Z5) with its RTX 3070 Max-Q GPU.

That said, if you want something lighter, more portable with a slimmer silhouette, the MSI Stealth 15M (A11UEK-009) is the top pick. Still, this year’s Predator Helios 300 once again takes home the Editors of the Year award for mid-range 15.6-inch gaming laptops.

Gaming Laptops From Any Angle

The Acer PH315-54-760S can’t be confused with anything but the regular gaming Predator Helios 300, which features an all-black chassis, angled lid corners, signature rear cooling vents, and a blue jade Predator logo with parallel lines on the cap. The only place you see the word Predator is below the screen, with a more confident vibe and a leap toward a broader appeal.

Measuring 0.9 x 14.3 x 10 inches (HWD) and coming in at 5.3 pounds, the Predator Helios 300 is kinda a mid sized gaming laptop, not really too big, not too small either. You know, that sort of middle ground thing. By comparison , the HP Omen 15 is thinner (0.89 x 14.1 x 9.4 inches) , and the MSI Stealth 15M is also on the slimmer side (0.6 x 14.1 x 9.7 inches).

When it comes to build quality the Helios 300 uses part aluminum, with the lid, palm rest, and keyboard deck all made from it, and honestly at this price point, it doesn’t really wow. A lot of similarly priced rivals go for more metal looking finishes; The Gigabyte Aero 15 and Razer Blade 15 Base Model are both good all metal choices, if you care about that sort of thing.

A Smooth Predator At 144Hz

On our review unit the 144Hz high refresh rate panel gives smooth visuals across most game types, and it really shines in e sports. The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-53-71QX from last year keeps the same full HD display, but it maxes out at a 240Hz refresh rate instead.

Still, both screens bring solid brightness and wide viewing angles, with anti glare surfaces too, and they cover 100% of the rated sRGB color space , so colors look vivid pretty consistently.

Like the older model, the PH315-54-760S also includes that colorful four zone RGB keyboard. Acer’s PredatorSense app lets you do proper RGB control, meaning you can set red, green, and blue values for each zone. You can even launch apps using a dedicated button on the numeric keypad,, which is a nice touch sometimes.

While the keyboard lacks the per-key backlight customization of the more expensive Omen 15 and Alienware m15, its four zones and endless colors should satisfy most gamers’ needs. Even better, the app lets you save individual profiles.

The typing experience is satisfactory, and for gaming, the keys have an intuitive feel so your fingers feel sticky. The thicker border on the arrow key clusters advertises WASD making them appear brighter, and highlighting this laptop’s gaming appeal. Below the keyboard is a buttonless trackpad that fits the 15.6-inch screen perfectly.

Honestly the port selection looks solid even if you dont have Thunderbolt 4. Over on the left there is that mix of stuff, a couple USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, plus a Killer E2600 2.5Gbps Ethernet jack, and the audio combo jack. For getting online you’ve got Wi‑Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 there too, and it runs through the Killer AX1650i wireless card.

Then on the right, you’ll find both USB Type-A and USB Type-C, with device charging support when the laptop is powered off. Also included are HDMI 2.0b along with a mini‑DisplayPort 1.4 for video output.

Performance – Refreshing with Ampere

The Acer Predator Helios 300 in this review (model PH315-54-760S) is kind of a mid-range setup with a GeForce RTX 3060 6GB, you know. It comes together with Intel’s octa-core Core i7-11800H processor, 16GB memory ,and a 512GB solid-state drive, running Windows 10 Home as the operating system. Honestly this looks like a more muscular spec sheet, compared to the similarly priced MSI Pulse GL66, but the Helios 300 also has that extra punch in a way, because the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 (16GB) option is more powerful there.

Still, the Pulse GL66 and also the Helios 300 , don’t quite measure up against the Asus ROG Strix G15. That laptop has an AMD Ryzen R9-5900HX processor, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. But yes you will end up paying a little more for the added performance boost, and a more premium configuration overall, I guess.

16GB of RAM feels good enough for anyone just buying this laptop for gaming, but if you’re into creatives then this memory becomes a good choice for anyone who needs the device to work remotely.

In fact, 16GB of RAM makes it pretty good for multitasking, so its one of those rare gaming laptops that can manage live streaming while gaming, pretty easily. So yeah, here’s also an option worth eyeing if you’re a content creator.

A Smooth Sailing Player

As mentioned above, the gaming engine inside the Helios 300 is driven by an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card with 6GB VRAM. Now, what does that actually mean in real terms? Basically, you should be able to roam through the big, wide English countryside at over 58 fps while playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on Ultra, at 1080p .

For Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Ultra 1080p the Acer Predator Helios 300 landed at an average of 57 fps, which is comfortably above the mainstream gaming laptop figure of 49 fps . And, more interestingly, it also edged out the MSI Pulse GL66 (51 fps) plus the Asus TUF Dash F15 with its RTX 3070 (also 51 fps).

Then there’s Far Cry New Dawn , still at Ultra 1080p, where the Helios 300 did it again. It pushed past the category average of 74 fps, clocking 79 fps, and yes it beat the MSI Pulse GL66 (77 fps) as well as the TUF Dash F15 (71 fps).

Battery Life – Not exactly a surprise

Battery wise, you get about 3 hours and 24 minutes (Acer says even more). That’s slightly better than the 3:21 category average for gaming laptops. Still, super capable gaming machines often hover closer to 2.5 hours , so things could be a lot worse. It’s not going to power you through a cross country flight, but if you stay within range of a wall outlet for roughly three hours, the 300-nit display should do its job.

A Competent Mid-Range Gaming Opponent

The Acer Predator Helios 300 (2021) kind of gives gamers serious power together with a bright colorful display and a really comfortable keyboard. The Acer PH315-54-760S model we reviewed seems pretty fairly priced for what you get ,especially with its GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. But the competition is stiff, and that matters a lot – for about the same money, or just a bit more rice, you can look at Alienware m15, Gigabyte Aero 15 XC, and HP Omen 15. Those options bring eight-core processors, stronger graphic engines and, more polished features.
