There’s nothing flashy about Anker’s Soundcore Liberty Air true wireless headphones, but they deliver very strong audio performance, especially at a good price.

While nearly every audio manufacturer offers true wireless headphones, that doesn’t contribute to the price drop, with most pairs costing over $100. So, on that basis alone, Anker’s $79.99 Soundcore Liberty Air headphones are compelling. Deals get sweeter when you consider that they sound better than pairs that cost twice as much. Add simple controls and a waterproof design.

Design

Available in black, the Soundcore Liberty Air headphones have a sleek exterior and a touch control surface on the outer panel. Like the Apple AirPods, they have a stem that hangs down to your ears, but unlike the AirPods, they are proper headphones that completely seal the ear canal. They are also IPX5 rated, which means they can withstand splashes from any direction but cannot be submerged.

The on-ear controls split the task between the two headsets, with the right ear controlling playback, call management, and forward tracking, and the left ear controls the tracking backward and summons the voice assistant on your mobile device. All these operations are handled by multiple presses or hold for a few seconds. Some phone-specific controls can be used when making a call, such as double-tap to hold the current call to answer an incoming call. There is no volume control.

The flip-flop charging case has a matte black finish, with three status LEDs on the front. The included micro USB charging cable connects to the micro USB port on the underside. You also get five pairs of silicone ear tips. The headphones don’t use any earpads other than the tips, but the fit is pretty secure.

Anker estimates the Soundcore Liberty Air’s battery life to be around five hours, with an extra 15 hours in the charging case. That isn’t impressive, but it’s fine for the price, and your results will ultimately vary with your volume level.

Performance

Internally, the 6mm drivers provide a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. Like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the headphones have powerful low-frequency depth on tracks with strong bass content. At the highest listening levels, unsophisticated, the bass wasn’t distorted, and at a more reasonable volume, the low-frequency response was still quite clear and consistent with the highs.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Soundcore Liberty Air’s overall tonal character. The drums on this track are supplemented with some bass boosters, pushing them into an almost thunderous territory, but that’s it. Callahan’s baritone has a beautiful, rich mid-range that matches the solid definition in the high mids. The acoustic guitar structures and the higher register percussion hits are bright and crisp, and even the squeak of the tape takes a slight step forward in the mix. In other words, this is a sculpted, enhanced, but balanced notation.

In Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets more of a high-mid presence, allowing its attack to maintain its power, while the clank and the vinyl squeak is usually in the background is pushed up to the front. The beat-breaking sub-bass synth hits delivered with serious depth — we certainly heard deeper bass boost on this track, but Anker certainly didn’t shy away from the lows. Luckily, the deep basses are balanced with clear mids and highs. Vocal performances are presented with great clarity but perhaps a bit of added sound.

Orchestral tracks, such as the opening scene of John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, have some extra bass, pushing the lower register instrument forward in the mix. But brightness prevails—higher registers, strings, and vocals have a detailed, clear presence in the mix fixed by elevated lows, not overwhelmed by them.

The microphone offers slightly above-average clarity. Using the Voice Memos app on the iPhone 8, we understood every recorded word, and there weren’t many Bluetooth artifacts. The microphone sounds a bit far away, but this is usually the case with true wireless mics, and the signal is generally clear.

Conclusion

At $80, Anker’s Soundcore Liberty Air is easily among the best-sounding true wireless under-$100 headphones available. Just a little more, we’re fans of the EOZ Audio Air and the Samsung Galaxy Buds, both under $150.

Over $150, there are some great options, including the gym-focused JBL UA True Wireless Flash. But Anker keeps things simple and gets it right without providing unnecessary extras up the price.
