Call of Duty: Vanguard is the 18th version of the Call of Duty series.
That’s it, Call of Duty is finally… old enough to vote, but in the eyes of the fans, this series of games is forever stuck in place but never “big”. How many times have we been stuck in a cycle of boredom – excitement – expectation – disappointment from the time a Call of Duty game was announced to the time it came out?
This year is the first year since 2007 that we see the return of the three “pillars of modern FPS gaming” – Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield, but times have changed and the public’s reaction to the three of them is not as cheerful as they were 14 years ago.
But if Battlefield and Halo need to prove themselves after a long absence, Call of Duty still seems to be in an “unbeatable” position, especially in terms of revenue and number of players, and fame.
And so, Call of Duty has no reason to improve itself, and it is an obvious fact that a product “confused about who I am” like Call of Duty: Vanguard will still collect hundreds of million dollars for Activision, and they will continue the “milking” cycle that no one can stop.
“Call of Duty” and “war” are a pair of cards that love to play together, but no one takes the other seriously. It is an obvious fact that telling a good story about World War II is not difficult, for we are all clear about what is good and what is evil. But Call of Duty throughout its lifespan has covered all fronts that have long been ignored, and now in an attempt to tell a story that promises to be a “hidden corner in history,” the Call of Duty: Vanguard’s single shows the “catastrophe” that occurs when trying to create historical reenactment.
The story of the game revolves around a squad of special forces recruited from all over the world to carry out a secret mission in Berlin while the war is coming to an end. A raid on a train under a torrential downpour leads them to “Project Phoenix”, a plan hatched by Nazi remnants to create the Fourth Reich, and their mission is simply to hunt down the oligarchs behind it.
This is an interesting “What If” scenario and, if cleverly explored, will bring players to lesser-known fronts, allowing Sledgehammer Games to freely create a historical context and own fantasy.
However, that did not happen, because the plot of Project Phoenix, led from the point of view of Nazi officer Jannick Richter, was only summed up in the first and last two levels of the game, as well as in the passages cutscenes interspersed with each mission.
After the squad is captured during the raid, the game goes back in time to recount the events they were involved in, and so instead of offering a different perspective of World War II, Call of Duty: Vanguard has once again become “an anthology of fierce (famous) battles in history”.
To be fair, Call of Duty: Vanguard is a bit more innovative. Instead of letting you directly attack the Normandy coast during the usual D-Day battle, this time you will land in the woods inside and attack the enemy bunker from behind. Instead of immediately pushing Stalingrad into the frigid winter, players enjoy the summer just a few hours before the city falls. The North African campaign is dotted with mischievous “Tobruk moles” that help stir up the vast desert, and the Pacific stage on the Numa Numa trail brings back many dire memories of the World at Old War. On the other extreme, the Midway air battle is extremely eye-catching, but the aircraft control mechanism is quite bad making the experience of this level much more relieved.
Although the levels are well-organized and well-paced, it can’t hide a story that completely deviates from the narration of captain Arthur Kingsley. He praised a lot of the qualities of the team members, and how much they have sacrificed to be together now, but, except for the last screen, the game never gives the feeling that They are strongest when working with teammates.
These characters are not a vehicle to push the story of Call of Duty: Vanguard forward, but on the contrary, this story is completely focused on them, from the way they completely “hacked” Richter’s brain without meeting him without difficulty, until the quotes (which appear when the player dies) that previously came from politicians or philosophers in history, now belong to these four people.
This creates a script that has to be said to be “thinner than wet paper” in Call of Duty: Vanguard, with most of the time focusing on Richter and the CGI clips are very realistic but at the same time … long, meaningless, and doing only one thing is to “lift the compassion” of our superior quartet.
When the game’s story ended, it revealed itself as the springboard for the next Call of Duty: Warzone storyline this year, and also made the writer doubt that the 5 hours of single player It’s just a disguised character marketing, intended to motivate players to feel connected to these four characters and buy skins for them shortly.
Call of Duty: Vanguard has the best and worst multiplayer in recent years. That’s because the question “Is Vanguard’s multiplayer at least as good as Modern Warfare 2019?” is not an easy answer.
If you’re looking for the thrill of shooting and the “top” character animation/image quality of the 2019 game, they’re generally still present in Vanguard.
Sledgehammer Games also does not forget about new, sometimes controversial features such as mounting barriers or doors that can be opened and closed. The experience it brings is quite familiar… no, more precisely, so familiar, that the writer feels he is playing a World War II expansion of the 2019 version rather than a new game.
Fortunately, unlike Modern Warfare 2019, the levels in Call of Duty: Vanguard are designed to be “playable” with high diversity.
Some maps like Tuscan or Berlin still have the classic three-lane layout but add some new details, like a small side lane or a line connecting all three lanes to create a high separation. Others like the trenches in Numa Numa have a triangular layout with three evenly spaced Domination points, while the Red Star’s large size requires players to move around the edge and avoid the center, bringing many similarities with the Bloc screen in Call of Duty 4.
No Call of Duty: Vanguard map is as bad at the “living meme” level as Gustav Cannon in Call of Duty World War II, and they don’t favor campers too much by dozens of windows like Modern Warfare 2019.
The environmental destruction feature of the game is only on a small scale, but the wooden planks, wooden fences, and stone walls can be suddenly shot down, creating quite “Rainbow Six Siege” moments, allowing you to “kill” through small holes in the wall in a cheeky way! It’s only a pity that the respawn mechanism, although improved a lot from the beta, in the official game still causes situations like facing the character … at the wall, or placing them right in front of the cliff (especially on the Eagle’s Nest map).
However, if you are familiar with Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War, then your main question will probably be “How does Gunsmith in Vanguard do?”. God, where do we start…
This time, the guns will have 10 accessories that players can completely fit 10 slots at will without using Wildcard Gunfighter like in Black Ops Cold War. The game also brings back the Proficiency and Weapon Kit – special gun-specific properties that first appeared in Modern Warfare 3, and unlike the usual accessories, they are not flawed.
The game has a similar setback to Black Ops Cold War, which is that most of the guns in the same segment have the same selection of accessories, so “in the name of freedom of manipulation”, players can customize guns to the point of erase its inherent characteristics and create death machines that are very enjoyable but also break the game insatiably. STG44 and MP40 take down enemies with two shots at any distance, Double Barreled Shotgun with two hands, two guns with 30% of the screen shooting all enemies with a single shot, Combat Shotgun with fire bullets.
The problem with the Gunsmith system is that Call of Duty: Vanguard does not force players to choose between different accessories, no need to sacrifice scopes to get grips, but now your choice is simple. It’s just a matter of choosing between the A/B/C/D scope, the A/B/C/D grip, and the A/B/C/D barrel.
A gun with 10 accessories no matter how many flaws it has will always outperform its “empty” version unless you intentionally make the gun as weird as possible.
It creates a big barrier between new players and long-term players when level 1 guns have no doors to compete with level 70 guns, as well as too many accessories in the game made to shorten the time to kill enemies (“Time to Kill” – TTK), which was already short in the 2019 version of the game, is now even shorter in Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Not only does the barrel increase the rate of fire and bullet velocity, but the game also has Proficiency types that help shoot in the chest but deal headshot damage and increase the accuracy of the first bullet without completely compensating defects.
Vanguard’s gunfights are not a contest between who shoots better, but rather measure your reflexes and compete to see who has the most game-breaking gun. How is “competition” when you are shot down in 0.3 seconds and can’t react?
The rest of the Multiplayer is so familiar it’s boring. The options Combat Pacing are classified into three types of Tactical – Assault – Blitz which only measures how many players the map has in total, to serve the shooters who want the target to appear before the target every 2 seconds for easy kills, rather than smart moves and familiarity with the maps.
The Killstreak system is boring in terms of numbers when there is no Killstreak aircraft that you can directly control. The game also omits some small but useful changes in Black Ops Cold War, such as assigning a Field Upgrade to the Loadout, changing the tiny flag in Domination mode into a whole small area so that the scorer is easier to defend, or even the “Ping” feature learned from Apex Legends.
It’s hard to say much about the Zombies part because it’s actually… nothing to talk about!
Der Anfang is a new level that blends some of the mechanics from Black Ops: Cold War’s Outbreak and Onslaught into the classic map. It was quite fun in the first play. From the central area of the Red Star map, the game lets you teleport to other locations (one of them, surprisingly, is Shi No Numa from Black Ops 1) to complete single missions as simple as escorting a floating statue, protecting a gem (also floating), and shooting as many zombies as possible before time runs out.
Complete them and you can activate Covenant pedestals that contain skills like healing when smashing zombies, or getting teammates up faster.
If it sounds… drier than normal Zombies mode, you’re not mistaken. Der Anfang currently doesn’t have an “Easter Egg” (main storyline), doesn’t have Wonder Weapons like the Ray Gun, and even the Pack-a-Punch upgraded gun doesn’t have its camo. Right now it’s simply Outbreak mode encapsulated on a small scale and doesn’t offer a different experience except shooting zombies until you… get bored.
Treyarch says Der Anfang’s Easter Egg (and likely the rest of the features) will land when the first season of Call of Duty: Vanguard kicks off in December, and maybe we won’t get it until then to get an overview of Zombies.
