Garmin Approach S72 Watch is a new golf GPS watch built around data and analysis while you play. The notable bits: biometric tracking, swing analysis read straight off the wrist, and green reading.
The Approach S72 Watch comes in 43 mm and 47 mm, with an AMOLED display, a titanium bezel, a sapphire lens and a ComfortFit fabric strap. Garmin designed it to be worn on the course and off it.
Built around shot data
The Approach S72 puts swing analysis on your wrist while you play. Hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and other numbers show up during the round, so players have something firm to judge their technique on.
Heart rate comes from biometric data¹ and updates in real time. After a round, players can go back through the heart rate trend and see how it moved against their score.
Green reading and putting analysis
Green reading on the Approach S72 works with a Garmin Golf Membership: it gives you the slope of the green and the direction it breaks. Golfers use that to read the line and go into each putt with more information.
After every round, the Garmin Golf app breaks the putting down into speed trends, direction trends, make percentage and a few other numbers.
The watch also supports Driving Range, where it records swing metrics and shot trends through a practice session. Garmin Connect keeps that data, so players can follow their practice over time.
More data for decisions on the course
Beyond the swing data, the Approach S72 adds Visual Satellite Imagery, an overhead view of every hole. Golfers can use it to pick a landing spot, choose a line, or keep away from hazards.
Garmin is putting more on the wrist here than distance numbers.
Still a smartwatch for everyday use
Off the course, the Approach S72 does the usual health and fitness tracking: wrist heart rate, stress, body energy and advanced sleep tracking.
This is the first time the watch has a speaker and microphone, so calls and some voice commands work from the wrist. There is an LED flashlight too, white and red.
The 47 mm version runs up to 20 hours in golf GPS mode and up to 16 days in smartwatch mode.
