Design and Build Quality

A Slim and Lightweight Profile

The HTC Snap was kinda designed with portability in mind. It weighs just 120 grams and measures 116.5 x 61.5 x 12 millimeters, so at the time it was seen as slim, and not too heavy. Its compact size made it simple to slide into a pocket or purse, which many users kinda liked because they were always moving, without much time to fuss around.

The phone’s build is mostly plastic, but there’s this soft-touch finish that gives comfort and better grip. Even though it is plastic, the Snap still felt steady in your hand, you know, no obvious creaks or unwanted flex when you press it. Overall the construction quality seemed to match other HTC devices from that era, the ones often praised for toughness and for the little details that actually matter.

QWERTY Keyboard and Navigation

One of the HTC Snap’s most noticeable features was the full QWERTY keyboard. It was made for people who cared about quick texting and email. The keyboard has four rows of keys, and each row sits a bit higher, so you get that tactile feedback, like you can feel what you’re pressing. The keys were spaced in a way that helped typing stay accurate, even if you have larger fingers, which honestly is a nice bonus.

Also there was a dedicated number row, which feels like a thoughtful move because entering numbers is less of a hassle, you don’t constantly need to switch modes or toggle around.

Above the keyboard, the Snap featured a navigation pad with a central OK button, flanked by call and end buttons, two soft keys, a home key, and a back button. This setup allowed for easy navigation through the device’s menus and applications without needing to rely heavily on the small 2.4-inch display.

The Snap almost imitates the BlackBerry Curve from design to control. However, comparable in size, the larger one, the screen of this model is 2.4 inches wide.

Right below the screen, a series of buttons, in which the marbles like the trackball on the BlackBerry are in the center. This model owns a full QWERTY keyboard.

Although the Snap screen looks sharp and bright, but the resolution is only 320 x 240 pixels, far behind the BlackBerry Curve 8900, this model has a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels. This is a device that is significant when browsing the web, because Snap will not let the characters and images display as well, in addition to the site becomes more difficult to see.

However, the screen disappointment is just a very small point, the real keyboard of the Snap great, get back the image for the model. The keys of the machine are separate, spaced in rows, raised high and wide, allowing easy finger typing for fast e-mail and instant messaging.

But, the Snap’s hardware really wasn’t made for heavier apps, or for multitasking in the proper sense. So yeah, people might notice little slow moments when they jump between several applications, or when they’re doing more complicated stuff like opening big email attachments, or browsing pages packed with images and other heavy content.

It also came with 256 MB of internal storage, and only around 150 MB was actually available to the user. This was enough for emails, contacts, and maybe a few apps, still, it didn’t take long before it started feeling tight, especially if someone wanted media files, or wanted to add more programs. Good news though, the HTC Snap included a microSD card slot, so storage could be expanded, up to 16 GB.

Battery Life

The HTC Snap had a 1500 mAh removable battery, which was kind of roomy for the size of the device and its overall power needs. Since the hardware was relatively frugal, and it didn’t include power hungry features like a massive screen or a high performance processor, the battery results were pretty solid. Basically the phone could last a surprisingly long time, without feeling drained too fast.

Under usual use, like sending and receiving emails , plus messaging and a bit of web browsing now and then, the Snap could really go on for a full day without much trouble on one charge. For lighter users , it might even edge into a second day before needing a recharge, which was pretty convenient. That mattered a lot for business users too, since they were on their phones for hours during the workday and needed the thing to stay responsive to their pace.

Powering it up was handled through a microUSB port, the kind people were used to back then. Also, the removable battery setup meant you could bring along a spare battery if you wanted extra juice while you’re out, something that is mostly missing from today’s smartphones.

Connectivity

The HTC Snap offered a decent set of connectivity choices. It supported quad-band GSM for voice and text across regions, along with 3G for data. On top of that, there was Wi-Fi 802.11b/g for wireless internet, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for audio streaming, and GPS for navigation.

Having 3G in particular was kind of a strong point, because it could deliver faster data speeds than the EDGE networks that were still pretty common around that time. In practice, that ended up making things feel smoother for email sync, web browsing, and app downloads , so the overall experience was simply better.

Software and User Experience

Windows Mobile 6.1

The HTC Snap was running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, which was a fairly well known operating system for phones back then, especially for business use. Windows Mobile 6.1 gave people a sort of familiar feel, mainly if they already used Microsoft desktop software a lot. You had the usual Start menu, taskbar, and a set of pre-installed productivity apps ,ready to go.

It also came with Microsoft Office Mobile, so users could view and tweak Word docs, Excel sheets, and even PowerPoint slides while they were out and about. For business folks, this part was huge ,because staying effective between meetings or while traveling mattered.

There was multitasking too. In other words, users could run more than one application at the same time, then hop between them using the task manager. Still, the HTC Snap had limited hardware, so yes, multitasking could feel a bit sluggish, especially if multiple demanding programs were active ,at once.

HTC’s Custom Software

Beyond the typical Windows Mobile setup, the HTC Snap included extra applications and tweaks from HTC. One notable example was HTC Home, basically a flexible home screen widget. It let you reach frequently used things faster, like email, calendar ,and weather without digging through menus every time.

HTC also put in a custom email client called HTC Inner Circle ,and it was sort of built to help people decide what mattered most. With the dedicated Inner Circle button on the keyboard, users could jump into messages from their top contacts really fast, so those important conversations felt, more or less never missed.

These changes were actually well received by users, because they added something to the Windows Mobile experience, but without bogging the person down with too many extras. HTC’s software mostly fit with the operating system in a nice way, so the overall flow felt pretty smooth and… cohesive.

Messaging and Communication

The HTC Snap was mostly sold as a messaging phone, and it followed through, leaning hard into email, SMS, and instant messaging. The full QWERTY keyboard made it easier to type out messages quickly. It also helped that there were multiple messaging clients, so users could stay connected across different platforms at the same time.

The device supported Microsoft Exchange for work email, and also POP3 plus IMAP for personal accounts. On top of that, Windows Mobile came with a basic SMS client ,and Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging.

One of the nicer standout bits, was Inner Circle itself ,which let users rank messages from particular people. That was especially handy for business users who needed to keep track of important messages from colleagues, clients, or superiors.

Multimedia and Entertainment

Camera

The HTC Snap came with a pretty plain 2-megapixel rear camera, which was kinda usual back then for many smartphones. That camera didn’t really include the more advanced stuff, like autofocus, a flash, or proper image stabilization , so overall it was more like a simple point-and-shoot setup rather than anything fancy.

When it came to image output, it was sort of “okay” at best, but a lot of pictures ended up looking grainy, and not very sharp, especially once the light dropped. Still, it worked well enough for quick captures, or when you just wanted to send something through MMS . If you cared a lot about photography though, this definitely wasn’t the right choice.

On the software side, there were basic controls in the camera app for tweaking things like white balance and exposure, but those options were rather limited compared to the more advanced camera applications you could find on other devices.

Music & Media Playback

On the HTC Snap there was a built in media player that could handle several audio and video formats, like MP3,WMA, AAC, and MP4. Still, because the display was so small and the hardware had limited processing power, it was not really ideal for heavy multimedia consumption, if you know what i mean.

When it came to audio playback, things were pretty solid. The speaker managed decent volume and pretty clear sound for music, or even podcasts. But somehow there wasn’t any normal 3.5mm headphone jack, so users basically had to go with the included microUSB headset. Otherwise you had to grab an adapter so your own headphones would work, and honestly it was a bit annoying, like in a small everyday way.

It also had FM radio support, and that was slowly showing up less often on smartphones, though many people still liked it for live broadcasts and similar content.
