Intel Core i7-3960X processors support up to 12 processors, 1600MHz 4-channel DDR3 memory bandwidth, promising a powerful powerhouse for demanding 3D graphics and intense gaming.
The Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme is one of the first Intel Core i7-3960X family of processors (codenamed Sandy Bridge). Users and application developers, content creators, 3D demos, gamers … will experience new power from additional cores, large CPU cache, and memory data’s transfer speed four channel. The processor also supports the Intel Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) instruction set that provides faster 3D processing and physics calculations.
The appearance of the new processor is also larger than the first version Extreme is Intel Core i7-9xx. The Intel Core i7-3960X uses the LGA2011 socket.
The new processor, codenamed Sandy Bridge E, is based on 32nm technology, clocked at 3.3GHz, with 384KB of L1 cache, 1.5MB of L2 cache and up to 15MB of L3 cache.
The Intel Core i7-3960X is fully unlocked, overclockers and technology enthusiasts can easily adjust their performance settings with simple utilities. Compared with the first generation Extreme, the new processor has many changes such as integrated memory controller up to 4 channels of DDR3 (instead of 3) with up to 1600MHz. The Intel Core i7-3960X also includes 40 lanes of PCI Express 2.0 so that motherboard manufacturers can flexibly deploy two 16x PCI Express slots, one 8x slot or one 16x slot, three 8x slot. This integration also reduced the functionality of the chipset on the BMC – only one X79 chip played the role of the previous southbridge with support features as shown. (The Core i7 Extreme motherboard comes with two chips – the X58 northbridge and the ICH10 southbridge).
To cool down this processor, Intel unleashes a liquid-cooled CPU cooler solution, developed by Asetek, to cool the system efficiently without requiring maintenance.
