amazon Music Hall MMF 2.2 reviews
The strong return of recent years shows that the LP is no longer a nostalgic play. The audiophile is back in the “fossil” sound format in the hi-fi world. Bearing in mind this trend, Music Hall has launched the popular MMF 2.2 product aimed at players in the process of getting used to coal disk.
Compact, user-friendly, easy to install, easy to operate, sound balanced, the first impression on MMF 2.2. Probably, this is one of the great trays worth to anyone who wants to get acquainted with analog audio reference.
MMF 2.2 is made of lacquer wood, small, compact, but certainly with a weight of nearly 10kg. The needle of the MMF 2.2 is built in a MM type (moving magnet). Of course, the needle design of this type of machine is not to demand high quality, but convenient. Players can hear as soon as they “smash box” device without having to spend time finding and selecting needles outside. The machine uses 2kg aluminum wheels, motor insulated asynchronous with two speeds of 33 and 45 rpm. To switch from 33 rpm to 45 rpm, instead of using the switch as another wheel, users simply lift the aluminum tray and reposition the cage rope in place. Motor of larger or smaller diameters corresponding to each mode. The entire operation takes no more than half a minute.
Installing MMF 2.2 does not require special skills. Installation consists of three main areas: installation of motion transmitting systems, counterbalance of needles, and installation of remaining accessories.
First, remove two plugs on the drive motor, loop the rope around the pulley of the main tray and the auxiliary tracks, set the mode to 45 rpm. Then, place the main dish on the spindle. Considering that the actuator is complete. Switch to a needle calibration that involves a little more cautious manipulation. The first is to place the balance on the arm and select the tracking force at 1.75gr (according to the specifications of the needle under the machine). Next, hang the non-slip balance on the hook in the guide position. Here, the main installation of the machine is almost complete. The rest of the work involved only fitting the inner plastic dust cover and swiveling the three-foot anti-vibration to the abdomen of the machine.
Using an adapter to connect to a power source is one of the remarkable points of MMF 2.2. In addition, the machine also uses the signal line attached. This design is double-sided: saving money on accessories for players, but makes it difficult for the player to upgrade the wiring system to improve the sound quality.
The MMF 2.2 is paired with the Rogers E40a amplifier and uses the 12AX7 phono amplifier. The speakers used in the system are Totem Rainmaker. Analysis Plus conductor system.

From the beginning, MMF 2.2 works stably and smoothly without much tweaking. When listening to the needle in the machine, the sound of MMF 2.2 has some limitations in bass and dynamic, but still retain the warmth of the analog source.
Try with the Wish You Were Here CD (180gr), the system still makes the Pink Floyd crush the soul of the music. In the first track Shine on Your Crazy Diamond, the electric guitar of David Gilmour appears thick and sweet. However, Nick Mason’s statement on the drum set was not “critically acclaimed” because of the low bass, drum beat was not enough to stretch. This disadvantage was overcome when I switched to Clearaudio’s Virtuoso needle. The radio tune sounds like a Wish You Were Here so listeners feel like listening to an old radio. The guitar solos in the lyre plus the lyrical melody of the music give the listener a pleasant feeling. David Gilmour’s distant, reminiscences of singing are rustic and inspirational enough to give the listener of Pink’s “private realm.”
Moving on to the classic saxophone of Deutsche Grammophon, the well-known LP Accardo Interpreta Paganini, MMF 2.2 (with Clearaudio’s needle) made me feel this charcoal fit for the rendition of symphony. The majestic sound of La Campanella is vividly reproduced in a space large enough for listeners to feel the depth and breadth of the music scene. One of the characteristics of analogue sound sources is that it does not need to push the volume of the system too loudly, but listeners still feel the music is being played live. MMF 2.2 also does this. Just close your eyes, the space of the chamber itself appears in the listener’s mind. That is the advantage of the coal disk. No need to invest a lot of money, listeners also have the experience of live sound. The underlying cause derives from the 1.1 reproduced analog signal.
Listening to classic pop records in the 1970s and 1980s such as Air Supply, Willie Nelson, BonneyM … live, rustic music with thick, warm colors. For those not too hard-tempered, such a configuration is enough to satisfy the pleasures of music.
The static of MMF 2.2 is quite good, the sound is stable, balanced. However, space is limited, not really convincing compared to the more expensive coal plates on the market. But compared to the sound of the CD player ($ 1,500), I will choose MMF 2.2, because its sound close, friendly and soulful.
