The hot spot for today’s large, ultra-wide screens is 49 inches. The $1,299.99 Philips Brilliance 499P9H is the fourth example of these titanic displays we’ve reviewed, and like the others we’ve tested, its makers have taken care of it a lot into its design. With its large curved screen, high native resolution, and wide color coverage, the 499P9H is a boon for multitaskers, and it handles photos and videos well. It’s a good investment; it combines with the LG 49WL95C-W as our top pick for a large-screen ultra-wide business monitor.

Superwide

The 49-inch VA display in the Brilliance 499P9H measures 5,120 x 1,440 pixels, equivalent to two 27-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) monitors placed side by side for an ultra-wide display 32:9 aspect ratio. This resolution is sometimes referred to as “dual quad HD” (DQHD). The resolution and aspect ratio of the 499P9H matches the curved monitors’ Dell UltraSharp 49 (U4919DW) and LG 49WL95C-W.

One difference between these monitors is that the 499P9H’s screen is more strongly curved, giving viewers a particularly immersive experience. The curves on the Dell U4919DW and LG 49WL95C-W are more modest. While the 499P9H has a 1800R curvature rating – meaning that if you put enough of these monitors side by side to form a circle, it would have a radius of 1,800mm or 1.8 meters – the U4919DW has a softer 3800R curve. LG does not give a curvature rating for the 49WL95C-W, but it is in the light, similar to the U4919DW.

Brilliance 499P9H, Dell U4919DW, and LG 49WL95C-W are built primarily for business use; The other 49-inch ultra-wide monitor we reviewed, the Samsung CHG90, is built for gaming. It has the same powerful 1800R curvature and 32:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio but a lower native resolution of 3,840 x 1,080 pixels. That allows gamers to push higher frame rates for a given graphics card than is possible with a 5K landscape monitor like these Philips, LG, or Dell models. The downside of the CHG90 is its relatively low pixel density (81 pixels per inch, or PPI). 499P9H, like the 49-inch screens from LG and Dell, has a higher pixel density (109ppi), which – all in all – results in sharper images. Image quality for both text and photos is good with Philips.

The stand is fully extended; the 499P9H measures 57 x 119 x 30 cm (HWD) and weighs 31.7 kg. The base’s metal kickstand is almost rectangular, measuring 39.8 x 30 cm, and the interior is hollow so you can keep your phone, drive, or other small peripherals. The shaft that connects the base to the cabinet is subdivided, a space in the middle to thread cables. The stand supports height, tilt and swivel adjustments.

A webcam pops up at the top of the 499P9H when you tap it and securely snaps back to the screen when you’re not using it for privacy. It is equipped with sensors for Windows Hello facial recognition, allowing easy login to Windows 10 devices.

In terms of connectivity, the 499P9H has two HDMI 2.0 ports, one upstream port, and three USB 3 downstream ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, an Ethernet jack, and a USB Type-C port. You can use the USB-C port to charge or power laptops or smaller devices (it can deliver up to 65 watts) and transfer data over the cable. It also has a built-in keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switch for users using two discrete PCs with one monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

The console also has a 3.5mm audio jack for supported headphones or external speakers. The 499P9H’s pair of built-in 5-watt speakers push volume and sound quality decently, although they’re not as powerful as the two 10-watt speakers found in the LG 49WL95C-W.

Check HDR, Color & Brightness

The Brilliance 499P9H has a modest 60Hz refresh rate and includes AMD FreeSync support. In contrast, the CHG90 has a game-friendly 144Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync 2 support, improving basic, distinguished FreeSync mainly by better HDR support. That said, based on my experience running Final Fantasy XV, Hitman, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the 499P9H should be fine for casual gaming. It also performed well in rendering our standard test photos and both SDR and HDR video.

Speaking of HDR, the 499P9H is certified for DisplayHDR 400, the bottom end of VESA’s DisplayHDR scale, which means — first and foremost — its brightness is at least 400 nits (candelas per meter squared). I performed our brightness, color, and black level tests using a Klein K10-A colorimeter, a Murideo Six-G signal generator, and Portrait Displays ‘CalMAN 5 software. Philips review the brightness of the 499P9H is 450 nits; I recorded it at 348.6 nits in SDR (standard definition) mode, and 445.8 nits died with HDR on. I calculated its contrast ratio to be 3,278:1, slightly above its 3,000:1 rating.

Philips claims that the 499P9H covers 94.6% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 91% of Adobe RGB. I measured its coverage at 89.8 percent DCI-P3 and 85.2 percent Adobe RGB.

Most of the 499P9H’s functions, such as brightness, settings, and color modes, are controlled via the on-screen display (OSD) using five buttons at the bottom of the panel near its right corner. This button-based navigation is intuitive enough, though not quite as easy as the LG 49WL95C-W’s mini-joystick control system.

Bright, wide & user-friendly

With 49 inches of screen space, the Philips Brilliance 499P9H is a delight for multitaskers. Its native 5K horizontal resolution lets you work with complex photos and diagrams or two or three windows side by side. It’s bright, supports HDR, and has good color coverage. It’s a very capable monitor, although it’s on the pricey side like others in its class.

This console has a less powerful speaker system than the LG 49WL95C-W, and it lacks that model’s mini joystick OSD control. But the Brilliance 499P9H has its strengths, including a Windows Hello-friendly webcam. It’s easily recommended for any office looking for a monitor multitasking monster that provides a good user experience.
