The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 initially appears to share the same design elements as its earlier models. The device maintains its traditional book-style foldable structure which displays identical dimensions to previous models. The Fold 6 introduces a range of improvements through Samsung’s subtle yet essential upgrades which enhance the device’s overall performance. The Fold 6 has become lighter and thinner while its width increased and its hinge design became more even throughout.
The device achieves improved performance through its enhanced design which includes a stable hinge that allows full flat folding. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 hardware represents the final achievement of Samsung’s product development process which began in 2019. Chinese smartphone manufacturers have already introduced many of these advancements through their foldable devices within previous two years.
Samsung has narrowed its gap with competitors through its progress in making products that are both thinner and lighter. Hardware design represents only one aspect of a foldable phone. The software for Samsung’s foldable devices provides users with the most straightforward experience which includes superior support for common Western applications.
The Fold 6 includes all the practical Galaxy AI features which first appeared with the Samsung Galaxy S24 product line. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 serves as a minor upgrade to the Fold 5 model because it includes multiple substantial enhancements. The device maintains its identical battery capacity and near duplicate camera system while it weighs 238g and has a thickness of 11.9mm.
The device achieves better protection through its enhanced IP48 rating which replaces the previous IPX8 standard. The Fold series introduces its first symmetrical design through this device which eliminates excess hinge protrusion during the folded state.
The hinge represents the component which Samsung maintains as its strongest product. The Fold 6 hinge provides exceptional strength which creates a complete and stable opening experience. The device needs specific force to operate its opening mechanism which can maintain multiple positions beyond what I have seen in other foldable devices. The hinge functions as the most dependable component which provides essential value to the product. The new Fold design shows two features which make it distinct from previous models which current Galaxy S Ultra design language established.
The hinge area between the folded points creates a corner section which causes discomfort when the device rests in my hand. The case provides a solution but it remains strange that Samsung engineers chose to ignore comfort design for devices without cases. The outer display now shows an increased size of 6.3 inches which is larger than its previous size of 6.2 inches. The screen now displays wider content because Samsung changed its aspect ratio from 23.1:9 to 22.1:9.
The cover screen has gained enough width through these small adjustments which allow users to type comfortably. I can now type with both hands at close to my maximum typing speed. The main 7.6-inch foldable display now has a wider display area because of this development. The new folding screen display shows a shallower crease which improves user experience when compared to earlier Samsung folding displays.
The bending mechanism creates a visible line on the screen which exists as an obvious feature that users can see. The main display achieves its stunning visual quality through its 2160 × 1856 resolution and 3000 nits peak brightness. The ultra-thin glass material Samsung uses to cover its flexible OLED display now exhibits improved glass-like qualities according to Samsung although the company does not state this information.
The Fold 6 uses the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor but maintains the same 4,400mAh battery capacity which creates disappointment. Samsung needs to act carefully because of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 incident but Chinese companies now produce foldable devices with batteries that exceed their current limits. The Fold 6 has a smaller battery capacity than the larger battery present in Xiaomi’s foldable device. The good news is that battery life maintains its solid performance because Samsung optimized system and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor operates efficiently.
The camera system maintains its previous design with a triple-lens rear system and two selfie cameras that exist on both screens. The ultra-wide camera system received its only hardware improvement through the installation of a new sensor. The Fold 6 test results show strong camera performance because Samsung image processing has advanced and the mirrorless display system achieves peak performance except for the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro which exists in China only.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 operates Android 14 together with OneUI 6.1.1. OneUI provides users with an efficient interface that supports advanced multitasking functions even though its animations and icon design lack complete refinement. The main screen taskbar provides users with speedy app switching while three-app split view and multiple floating windows create a better productivity experience than iPhones and Pixels.
The biggest software upgrade, however just like on the S24 Ultra—comes from AI features. It’s sometimes unclear whether these tools are powered by Samsung or Google, but they work very well. “Circle to Search,” introduced with the S24 series, is included and incredibly useful—I use it dozens of times a day. Real-time two-way translation is also available, even supporting niche languages like Cantonese. The Fold 6 can summarize web pages or text in Samsung Notes, and even translate handwritten text between languages.
AI-powered photo editing is also present, along with a new feature called “Sketch to Image.” This allows you to draw a simple sketch even a rough one—and use generative AI to transform it into artwork (in Samsung Notes) or a realistic image (on actual photos). The “Sketch to Image” feature works remarkably well—it’s genuinely impressive.
