One feature I was curious about when I picked up the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 was the 86 dB emergency siren. The number on its own tells you very little about how loud that is, so I set it off in a few different places to see whether it’s useful and how far it carries. Here’s what I made of it.

How loud is an 86 dB siren, and how far does it carry?

The siren on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is more than a box-ticking feature. In some situations it does real work. How well it works depends on what’s around you and how far away the person hearing it is.

How loud is 86 dB in practice?

From what I heard, 86 dB on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is loud enough that anyone standing nearby notices it straight away. The tone is sharp and cuts through normal conversation, but it isn’t painful if you only hear it for a few seconds.

What I liked while testing the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is that the siren holds its volume the whole time it’s sounding. It doesn’t trail off after the first few seconds. In a quiet room I could still hear it clearly from a fair distance away.

How far it carries in a quiet environment

Samsung says the 86 dB siren on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 can be heard from up to 180 m away. The sound keeps enough clarity at that range for people nearby to work out which direction it’s coming from.
I wouldn’t treat it as a long range signalling device, though. In my testing the Samsung watch kept the sound steady even while I was moving around.

How it performs in a crowd or outdoors

Testing it in a busy area and outdoors, the siren on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 was still sharp enough to get the attention of people close by. But traffic, wind and crowd noise cut the usable range down a lot.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 does its best work when you need people nearby to find you quickly. I’d call it a useful bit of extra safety for moments when you can’t make a call yet, or you need attention right away.

Is the siren on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 worth using?

After some time with it, I’d say the siren is one of the more practical features on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, particularly if you run, trek or travel on your own. 86 dB is loud enough to signal with in plenty of real situations.

I still see it as an extra layer of safety rather than a replacement for proper emergency contact. Use it at the right moment and it can genuinely help when something unexpected happens.
Having tried it, the 86 dB siren strikes me as a small feature that makes the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 more reassuring to wear. What do you think, is 86 dB enough to count as a real safety feature on the Watch Ultra 2?
