It is no exaggeration to evaluate Amazfit PowerBuds Pro as the most genuine headset device. In addition to functions such as listening to online music, and receiving calls from phones, laptops, or wearable devices, this wireless headset model can also automatically track your running progress, let you know when you’re running out of breath, and can even detect your ears are exposed to too much noise.

This is a significant upgrade in smart features from the Amazfit PowerBuds, including heart rate monitoring, fast charging, and a completely different design.

The new PowerBuds Pro, priced at $149.99, is more expensive than the previous PowerBuds model but is a decent choice for those looking for a wireless headset that offers more than just comfortable sounds like other headphones.

We have tested the experience and below are detailed reviews of Amazfit PowerBuds Pro.

Amazfit PowerBuds Pro: Design, fit, and controls

While PowerBuds have a rounded appearance, Powerbuds Pro has a completely different design. This headset model has a white stem body, combined with a white charging case, giving a very similar feel to AirPods in appearance and size.

Comes with 4 sets of silicone earphones of different sizes, this is a good idea to be able to choose the right size for each person. And it’s really useful, although it may not fall out, often the headset will move a bit back and forth, especially during exercise. We like the small earcups like the Jaybird Vista 2 or the hook-and-loop design like the Beats Powerbeats Pro, so they won’t budge during workouts.

This headset is IP55 water and dust resistant, suitable for when you sweat a lot during exercise or even when it rains.

Amazfit is also equipped with touch control buttons integrated into the body of the headset. You can tap it to play/pause music, launch your phone’s voice assistant and use the built-in microphone to talk, or switch between noise-free and full listening modes. A simple tap on the headset can also adjust speed, heart rate, and other fitness data when paired with the Zepp Health app.

These controls can also be changed in the linked application if the current settings do not suit you, but there is no option to adjust the volume.

If you move a little, those controls should work just fine. But if you’re running and need to triple-tap to activate the Google Assistant, it’s a little trickier.

The interactive physical buttons always work well even when exercising, sitting on the train, or at a desk.

Smart features

After pairing it with the Zepp Health app, you will find this headset model very versatile. We’ll dive into the audio features in a later section, but now let’s focus on the health and fitness features of Amazit first.

The first new feature is Hearing Health, based on hearing protection standards released by the World Health Organization to protect your ears. Amazfit has created a suggested mode not to use the headset on each side for more than 40 hours.

If you still want to listen, you can go into the app to refresh the suggested listening time. It’s a simple addition, as other headphone manufacturers warn users to keep an eye on their ears in case they are constantly subjected to excessive noise.

The next new feature is rather strangely named Cervical Spine Protector, which should probably be called a posture monitor. After you’ve calibrated the headset by sitting upright, the headset’s built-in motion sensor assesses how much back pressure you’re experiencing from any posture. It will also give you a warning if you’ve been sitting in one place for too long. Aside from the somewhat odd name, this is a great feature if you use the headset a lot at your desk, and won’t have to pay extra for dedicated posture monitors to do this.

In terms of fitness training, Amazfit retains the heart rate monitor from the previous Buds line to measure exercise levels, through the built-in PPG sensor in the right ear. You’ve got a comfortable headset with reliable heart rate monitoring. In addition to monitoring, you can set up high heart rate alerts, the headset will receive a simple tone when the heart has reached the limit you set in the app.

In our experience, heart rate monitoring works well when running at a steady pace, only 1-2 bpm different from average and maximum heart rate readings from the Garmin HRM chest strap -Pro. If you look a little closer at the graph, the Garmin chest strap shows a more even heart rate up and down than the headphones that are prone to shifting. For high-intensity exercise, the difference increases, and a difference of about 5 bpm occurs for the average and maximum heart rate data. While the heart rate monitoring feature is not bad, you need to use it according to the right circumstances to get the best results.

Amazfit also introduced a new feature that automatically detects when you’re running and starts recording data like distance, speed, average cadence, stride, and step count. This feature also works with third-party apps like Runkeeper, and MapMyRun, and like other Amazfit watches, we can also work it out through Strava. However, you can only share heart rate data and travel time. To get more metrics you need to access the Zepp Health app but the accuracy won’t be too high.

Accelerometer-based running tracking compared to Garmin running watches will give completely different results in terms of distance as well as metrics: speed and pace. The screenshot above will clearly show you the extent of the difference. You can standardize yourself in each run according to your experience, but it will be annoying.

Sound quality

The sound of PowerBuds Pro in our opinion is very excellent. The sound is big, warm, detailed, sharp, and has a wide soundstage. If you are not prepared according to your preferences and habits, then you can customize it as you like. A music equalizer is built in to better tailor the sound to your ears, with a wide range of settings available for different genres of music.

There are also three noise control modes including a Thru mode for more ambient reverberation, an Active Noise Canceling mode, or both off.

With ANC promises noise cancellation of up to 40 decibels. You also get dedicated ANC modes that adapt to your surroundings, when you’re traveling, exercising, and indoors. We found the adaptive modes for travel and training to work quite well, although it was difficult to tell the difference between the modes. The overall performance of the ANC is very good even on busy roads or when trains pass.

The final audio feature is called Motion Beat Mode, which, once enabled, automatically enhances the bass for more dynamic sound. Again, it’s hard to describe exactly how well this mode works because the sound on these headphones is often heavy on the bass.

All in all, for $149.99, the PowerBuds Pro delivers crisp and solid sound, and strong ANC performance, and even with ANC off it can please everyone.

Battery life

PowerBuds Pro’s battery life is largely dependent on frequently used features, and you can enable power-saving mode in the Zepp Health app. Statistics show that you will have 9 hours of use with ANC off, and only 5 hours and 45 minutes with ANC on.

The expected call time is 3 hours 30 minutes (when ANC is on), you will get a total of 30 hours from the headset and fully charged battery case when ANC is off, and when ANC is on this figure is 19 hours.

It must be said that the total time of use is quite a lot. In an hour of listening with ANC, while jogging and using auto-run detection, it drains 20% of the battery on each headset. Also in these conditions of use, if ANC is turned off, the number will be 10% on each headset.

If you compare the above numbers with AirPods Pro with ANC, the total time using Apple’s headphones is only 4.5 hours with ANC enabled. So it is still a good choice compared to competitors with higher price ranges.

If you want to check the battery life, you can go to the Zepp Health app to check the status of each headset and the battery life of the case. The single LED light on the front of the box will also let you know how much battery it has left to charge when needed. Use a USB-C charging cable and it takes 2.5 hours to go from 0-100%.
