More sophisticated
When booking a Canon 5D Mark III next to its predecessor, the 5D Mark II, the difference between the two machines, is not significant. 5D Mark III lumpy surface rougher, making it easier to grip than the version released in 2008.

The 5D Mark III has two card slots, one CompactFlash and one SD. You can write to both at once for backup, split RAW and JPEG between them, or let the second card take overflow.
For connections there are HDMI and USB ports. There’s no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so wireless transfer needs an add-on accessory. Otherwise, use a card reader.
Controls
The Q button opens the Quick Control screen, where you change the main settings without going into the menus. The buttons are well placed, and the menus are straightforward.
Battery
The LP-E6 is rated at about 950 shots per charge (CIPA), which is a lot for a DSLR. A full day of shooting or a wedding fits on one battery.
How It Compares
Canon EOS 6D Mark II: cheaper and newer, with 26.2MP, a vari-angle touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It also has a weaker autofocus system (45 points against 61) and a less rugged body, so it’s more of an alternative than a rival.
Nikon D810: 36.3MP and better dynamic range, which matters for landscapes and studio work. It shoots 5 fps to the 5D Mark III’s 6, and I’d give the edge in autofocus for action to the Canon.
Sony A7 III: a much smaller mirrorless body with 24.2MP, 4K video and in-body stabilization. It’s ahead on features. The reason to stay with the 5D Mark III is a bag of Canon EF lenses, since switching systems is expensive.
Weak Points
There’s no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or 4K. Video tops out at 1080p, with no in-body stabilization. The body is big and heavy, and it wasn’t cheap when it came out.
Verdict
The 5D Mark III is an older full-frame camera that still does the basics well. The body is weather-sealed magnesium. The viewfinder shows 100% of the frame. The 61-point autofocus, 41 of them cross-type, keeps hold of moving subjects. The 22.3MP sensor gives clean files for its age, including at higher ISO. It’s a good choice for events and portrait work if handling and focus matter more to you than the newest features. If you shoot a lot of video, want wireless sharing, or want something light, look at a newer body. Used, it’s a lot of camera for the money.
