GoPro has unveiled the latest in a line of premium action cameras. The GoPro Hero 10 Black is an updated design of the GoPro Hero 9, but with a better and more powerful brain.

An updated version of the company’s custom processor, called the GP2 is fundamental to the new camera’s capabilities, something we’d love to see on the DJI Osmo Action we reviewed a little while ago time. This not only enables high frame rate recording in high resolution but also better stabilization and higher speed on panoramic performance.

The camera can shoot at an astounding 5.3K resolution at 60 fps or 4K resolution at a massive 120 fps. That means 4x slow motion video has 4K resolution. Alternatively, if you want slower speeds, there’s a 2.7K resolution at 240 fps (or 8x).

This is the result of the new 23.5-megapixel camera sensor. Alternatively, you can also get 15.8-megapixel still frames from 5.3K video.

For still photography, the Hero 10 Black shoots 23 megapixels in Burst mode, night mode, SuperPhoto, and RAW.

Like its predecessor, the Hero 10 features HyperSmooth technology which is – essentially – advanced in-camera electronic stabilization. This means that footage is exceptionally smooth, almost gimbal-like – even when you’re in motion. For example, running with it in hand or mountain biking over rough terrain.

You cannot use both the latest HyperSmooth and the highest frame rate recording options on the go. However, it works at 4K/60 settings, so you can still get very sharp, quick footage when it’s on.

Besides the features mentioned above, GoPro has also made the lens cap more durable and hydrophobic, which means that when it gets wet, the water will glide away faster than in previous versions to ensure the scene. Your camera is not damaged by large water drops on the glass.

In addition, GoPro has also updated the in-camera horizon balance feature. The company has increased the tilt limit to 18 degrees: from 27 degrees in Hero 9 to 45 degrees in Hero 10, when shooting up to 4K/60 or 2.7K/120.

It can be used in webcam mode if you like, using the front screen to frame your footage. In addition, the quality of the live streaming image has also been improved.

There are many additional benefits to the new GP2 processor and sensor. Like, such an improved low-light performance where noise is visibly lower in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
