Introduction
The Olympus TG-610 Tough is a small pocket camera built for abuse — waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof, the works. It packs a 14-megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom, and once you get past the marketing, it’s a pretty capable little shooter for the price.
Lens: 5x optical zoom, 28-140mm equivalent, f/3.9-5.7. Decent range for everyday shots, and the aperture holds up okay in dim light — not great, but okay.
Sensor: 14-megapixel CCD. Nothing groundbreaking, but enough resolution for prints and cropping.
Processor: TruePic III+ handles the continuous shooting and autofocus. It’s responsive enough that you’re not waiting around between shots.
Display: 3-inch LCD, 230,000 pixels. Visible in direct sunlight, which is more than I can say for a lot of compacts in this range.
Storage: SD, SDHC, SDXC cards all work. Built-in memory is a token 45MB, buy a card, don’t bother relying on it.
Battery: Rated around 220 shots per charge on the lithium-polymer battery. Charges off AC adapter or USB, whichever’s on hand.
Digital Camera Features

Image Resolution-The camera can capture images at a maximum resolution of 4288×3216 pixels, allowing for large and detailed prints.
ISO sensitivity-The camera has a wider ISO range from 80-1600, which helps render good performance in low light and best reduce the image noise in bright light conditions.
Shutter speed-With a maximum of 1/2000 sec, the camera enables the freezing of fast-moving objects and the capturing of motion blur effects.
Aperture-The internal aperture range of f/3.9-5.7 enables the camera to exploit shallow depth-of-field effects and gain adequate performance under low-light conditions.
White balance-White balance presets offered by the camera include Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, and Tungsten, and applications for custom white balance settings are also available.
Autofocus-The autofocus system is fast, precise, and offers several AF modes, including Face Detection AF, AF Tracking, and Multi AF.
Image stabilization-The dual image stabilization on the camera combines digital and optical stabilization techniques in countering camera shake to provide clarity and sharpness in the pictures taken.
Another unique feature of the TG-610 is its integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) and an electronic compass, which enable photo geotagging so that one can trace where his or her photo was taken and map them accordingly. A very nifty feature for travelling and outdoor lovers who would like to remember in detail where they had taken their pictures.
Face detection does its job, subjects come out sharp and exposed right, most of the time anyway. Shadow adjustment pulls some detail back out of the dark corners of a shot instead of letting them go muddy.
Video’s capped at 720p/30fps, nothing special. At least there’s a dedicated button for it, so you’re not hunting through menus mid-shot. Fine for casual clips. Don’t expect it to hold up against anything built for actual video work.
Battery’s the real weak spot. About 220 shots a charge is low even for a compact. Bring a spare if you’re out shooting all day.
Overall, the Olympus TG-610 Tough is a great camera for outdoor enthusiasts or anyone who needs a camera that can take quite a beating. It offers a decent set of useful features and shooting modes, with its GPS and electronic compass greatly appreciated. While one wishes for improved battery life, from ever’ POV of ruggedness and performance, it is one for consideration for a durable camera.
