amazon Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun reviews
Maybe it’s been a long time since I’ve had the experience of a classic stealth game like this. Actually, the type of stealth game or sometimes called the sneaky action game is not a little. As Hitman series had just released a new game last year, Dishonored 2 was also released in late 2016. In these games, players often have the option of defeating the enemy, however. Stealth action only occurs in certain situations. This play gives players the right to decide how to approach their goals and actions.
But that’s not the play of the classic stealth genre of the old days that I still remember. In the classics of this genre, such as Commandos or Desperados, players do not have the choice of a personal play style approach. Instead, you have only one option to hide in the dark. That is also the play in Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. That is also a common feature of the sneaky type of the late 90s, with real-time strategy and cross-view.
In Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, the player controls five different characters. Each character has its own abilities, and of course, they themselves have a lot of limitations when acting alone. But solidarity is the power, the combination of their power together authentic brings a wonderful experience. I like how the game builds character and maintains the story of each character in each level. It creates the soul for each character thanks to the small details that mean it. This makes the characters go to the players, even after you finish the game. This is what few games on the market today do or focus on.
Attention to the details of the game does not stop at character building. Shadow Tactics is even enough to attract players who are not familiar with the genre due to its equally detailed graphics. Although the top-down view does not reflect the design of the characters, the level of detail of the screen environment can be seen as you enter the game. It’s lively and detailed. Look, do you see plants withered or rivers, waterfalls flowing? You can even see the erosion of time on walls or buildings. Then the flowers of all shapes and colors were crushed by human footsteps, or the snow falling on the streets and roofs. Actually, I never thought Unity engine could bring such nice graphics quality.
Shadow Tactics’ play style is also a strength when it comes to combining unique puzzle, action, and experiment elements together. Unlike many stealth games or tactics today, the game is quite harsh, often causing all your mistakes are quite expensive. Every time you are caught by the enemy, there is always a great amount of guards being reinforced, spilling out and scouring everywhere. And often when they start firing, it’s time for the “fun” to end. Although the player can decide when to save the game, the initial difficulty of the game can cause you to frequently abuse the system.

In return, the feeling of planning and running it perfectly is really exciting. The most interesting is the Shadow Mode feature, which allows the player to instruct each character to execute an action when commanded. If the plan is a bit of a matter of time or place of character then there is nothing to say. But when things went well, that was a great feeling. Unfortunately, this is also a weakness of Shadow Tactics. The problem is that each character is limited to executing an action in Shadow Mode.
Not only that, even the feeling of experience changes less and less. Really, the first time you are excited when you do a character “west east”, so that the remaining characters kill the soldiers. But when you have to do it again and again, the initial feeling has “dropped mood” a lot. Most players will undoubtedly repeat what they have learned fundamentally from the beginning of the game, in a “safe” play. Shadow Tactics itself does not “pave the way” for players to execute creative or “crazy” plans other than some of the available directions. Even the badges for players in Shadow Tactics are often easy to achieve as you play in the purest and most basic way. While they might have been for hardcore players. That is the problem.
Another problem regrettable is how the operation of Shadow Mode. You can not cancel an erroneously assigned command for a character, but must cancel the whole plan of all the other characters and repeat the execution plan. I often encounter this situation when the stage of the game is not as originally thought, and the repetition of the whole plan is quite annoying. I think the problem lies in changing the game’s controls when switching from a PC using a keyboard and mouse to a gamepad console, but I’m not sure because there’s no chance of experiencing a PC. Just know that the PC has been released before about half a year and has a very different interface on the console.
Last but not least, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a game that is full of potential and unique. I really have to praise the efforts of the developer when trying to revive the genre of extinct games on the market today. The dubbed version supports both Japanese and English quite interesting, bringing a lot of different emotions in the experience. On the other hand, while many other titles of the same genre are often more focused on stealth, Shadow Tactics emerge as a bright spot when trying to reach a different direction. Although still a little problem but this is still really a good game, for those who love stealth play the true meaning. Fans of the Desperados or Commandos series can not be ignored.
