Shure and Sennheiser are both major audio companies that have been active in the industry since its beginning and yet they continue to succeed today. I will not introduce these two brands to you because both new and experienced headphone users already know them. At present I possess two in-ear monitor headphones from these two brands: Shure SE215 and Sennheiser IE100 Pro. Packaging and Accessories
The Shure SE215 packaging which was created many years ago remains my personal favorite. The box is small and pretty but still eye-catching, containing all the necessary accessories from ear tips to a carrying pouch and even a cleaning brush. The Sennheiser IE100 Pro box comes with a huge design which uses foam as its main material whereas Shure uses a different packaging method.
The IE100 Pro package contains complete accessories, but Shure provides better package contents. The IE100 Pro pouch uses faux leather which looks premium, but I believe it’s less durable than the SE215 fabric pouch.
Design
The Shure SE215 design receives better evaluation from me than the IE100 Pro design. Both headphones create their structure from hard plastic materials, but the SE215 transparent casing displays all its internal parts. The cables exhibit stronger durability, which makes their appearance more noticeable. The Shure SE215 connectors use standard MMCX connectors, which enable users to substitute their cables.
The Sennheiser IE100 Pro design follows German design principles which require products to have both essential features and practical performance. Its construction lacks premium quality yet users find it highly comfortable because of its compact design and flexible cable material. The IE100 Pro connector uses MMCX technology yet Sennheiser developed its proprietary system which makes finding suitable replacement cables extremely challenging.
Specifications and Configuration
The Shure SE215 and Sennheiser IE100 Pro both feature one dynamic driver yet each company develops their own specific audio driver for their headphones. The Shure SE215 shows an impedance value of 20 ohms and sensitivity level of 107 dB whereas the IE100 Pro operates at 20 ohms with 115 dB sensitivity. Users can listen to both headphones through portable devices which include dongles and music players and computers.
Sound Quality
The Shure SE215 from over ten years ago continues to attract audiophile listeners who enjoy Vietnamese Golden Age music and Bolero because this in-ear headphone represents their preferred listening choice. The SE215 headphones produce very thick midrange sound with sweet tones which make Lan Ngoc and Le Quyen vocals sound more emotional. The SE215 produces abundant bass sounds yet its bass remains partly unclear which makes the headphones better suited for listening to slow ballads. The SE215 treble range functions as the product’s weakest aspect because it shows less strength than the two other frequency ranges and there to many musical details which have been deleted from the sound track resulting in my disappointment when I listened to Pomplamoose and Laufey tracks.
The Sennheiser IE100 Pro produces a lively and youthful sound which differs from the Shure SE215’s soft and smooth audio performance. The IE100 Pro delivers strong bass performance because its bass sounds more lively and clear compared to the SE215’s slow bass response. The Sennheiser IE100 Pro’s midrange produces a dry sound that lacks strong presence but it delivers superior sound detail compared to the velvety smoothness of the SE215. The IE100 Pro treble output delivers more sound detail than the competing product but delivers an excellent acoustic and electronic music listening experience. The IE100 Pro produces a sound profile which matches various music genres because its sound signature develops into a mild V-shaped pattern.
The Shure SE215 and Sennheiser IE100 Pro are two headphones in the same price range but possess very different personalities. The Shure SE215 suits people who want to attract attention with their appearance, while listening to soothing music that maintains their relaxed state. The Sennheiser IE100 Pro suits listeners who want to experience multiple music genres through their cheerful sound which carries detailed audio playback.
