amazon Huawei Honor 8X reviews
Nice design, good material and finishing
The Honor 8X has a design quite similar to the Huawei Nova 3i that BiaReview has recently reviewed. The similarity between the two machines comes from the overall design and material of the body. This phone uses a double-sided glass design with a popular metal frame on the phone market today. However, Honor has included some design details that make a difference to the product.
On the front is a large 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with rabbit ears, strong beveled edges in corners and a thin screen border compared to other price range products. Rabbit ears contain 16MP front camera, round voice speaker, proximity / light sensors and a notification light. The chin of the device is also cut quite thin, more compact than the brother Huawei Nova 3i.
On the back side, Honor makes some minor changes that make the product a certain difference. The left side of the back has a rectangular strip along the body which is rough and slightly redder than the rest. This is just a small detail, but it makes it different from the Huawei and Honor family products. The product is currently sold with 3 color options: red, blue and black, without the same color transition effect as the current trend but using light-streaking effects that run along the dorsal side.
The Honor 8X rear camera cluster splits into two separate cameras, not clustered into a seamless cluster like Nova 3i. Fingerprint sensor is also placed on the back in an easy-to-press position. This is a multidirectional, one-touch, always-on sensor and has a fast recognition speed. Besides fingerprint sensor, it also supports unlock by recognizing face from front camera with fast opening speed but not as safe as fingerprint.
The Honor 8X’s metal frame is rough. This is a small detail but makes a significant decision to feel the grip of the product, helping the grip grip is not slippery. The reason that the rough surface of the chassis determines the grip of this phone is because the back is designed flat, so the frame on both sides is the only point when holding the device in hand. The phones that have the back of the beveled face, the back of the hand that is hugging the palm will be the point of influence on the slippery grip.
On the sides, it has enough familiar ports and keys: power key, volume, audio jack, external speaker, micro-USB port, 2 SIM slot and independent memory card. Unfortunately, the device does not use a more convenient USB Type C port and is also popular in the mid-range segment.
Along with metal frame and glass, the Honor 8X also has good finishing. The details paired between the screen, the frame and the back of the glass are seamless, tight and free from hand. It can be said that the design is praiseworthy in this product compared to the same price range.
Large screen, slightly pale colors
The Honor 8X screen uses a large 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel, Full-HD + (1,080 x 2,340 pixels) resolution, 19.5: 9 ratio for pixel density 396 PPI, enough detail for display Clear content.
It gives users the option of color mode (2 normal and bright options) and color temperature (default, warm and cold). By default, the device will display in bright color mode and default color temperature. In this mode, the display colors look a bit pale, lack of freshness. The color difference can be seen very clearly when compared to phones with good screens like Apple iPhone 6 Plus / 6s Plus. When compared to the same Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2, the color of the Honor 8X is still a little lighter, most notably with the hot colors like red and orange.
The color temperature in default mode is also slightly cold due to blue hue. However, you can switch to warm color mode in the settings screen to improve. The maximum brightness of the screen is quite good, enough to see clearly in normal environments, except for direct sunlight viewing. The viewing angle of the screen is moderate, the color and brightness have slight variations when viewed from corners.
Overall, the Honor 8X’s display has pluses in size, a fairly thin border, but the display quality is average, especially in a slightly pale color.
EMUI 8.2 software is customizable based on Android 8.1
The Honor 8X now comes with EMUI 8.2 software customizable based on Android 8.1 like Huawei’s machines. The basic interface and software features are similar to the Huawei Nova 3i, which has been rated by BiaReview. In terms of software, Huawei and Honor are considered to be quite powerful customisers Android and include many of the manufacturer’s own features.
On this phone, you can hide basic navigation keys (Back, Home and multitasking) to switch to gesture-like actions like Apple iPhone X to have an overflow screen or to navigate with a key versatile (light touch to replace Back, touch and hold to return to Home, hold and slide left or right to enter Multitasking interface).
You can also hide the rabbit ears if you want with a black strip running along the top of the screen, the screen will no longer overflow. By default, the machine does not have an application tray, but there is an option to switch to the traditional Android interface with the application tray icon at the bottom of the screen.
EMIUI also has a magazine lock screen that constantly changes the wallpaper every time the screen is turned on and the theme store with lots of free themes to change the look. The phone management application available on the device helps manage data usage, intercepts harassing and virus scanning. Safe cabinet feature allows personal data security stored on the device with a password. Notably, even when driving mode helps to track the location and automatically answer incoming calls with messages.
Operations to control the phone by moving gestures such as turning the phone up to mute, pick up the phone to reduce the ring volume and wake up the device or put the phone on the ear to receive an incoming call and take a screen shot with 3 Finger is also equipped.
Even Party Mode, which allows you to combine multiple Honor 8Xs into a portable speaker system with various audio channels that appear on the Nova 3i are also available. Also, the Game Suit app store to optimize the gaming experience and block notifications that disturb the play process continue to appear on the Honor 8X.
Agile performance, good battle heavy game
The Honor 8X has similar performance-related parameters like the Huawei Nova 3i. The microprocessor developed by Huawei is Kirin 710. This is the new mid-range processor of Huawei that has comprehensive upgrade compared to the previous generation Kirin 65: 12nm process, which is more energy-efficient and has more cores. Cortext A73 and GPU performance are more powerful. Besides the new processor, it has 4GB of RAM along with 2 options of 64GB and 128GB memory.
On benchmarking software, the Kirin 710 outperforms Kirin 659 and is on par with the Helio P60 and Snapdragon 660, only slightly below Qualcomm’s processor for graphics processing capabilities.
In actual use, Kirin 710 and 4GB RAM on the Honor 8X handle relatively smoothly the phone usage tasks. This configuration also handles quite well the games on the current Android platform. Try two graphic heavy games that are not locked in frame rates: Dead Trigger 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade, this phone has a high frame rate of up to 60 fps with good frame stability: 92% with Warhammer 40,000 game: Freeblade and 85% with game Dead Trigger 2. This result is almost equivalent to the phones using Snapdragon 660 that BiaReview has a review not so long ago as Samsung Galaxy A9 2018 or Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite.
However, the device has a hot phenomenon after a few dozen minutes of playing games or using heavy applications. When the machine heats up, performance is affected, making the gaming smoothness significantly reduced. But overall, Kirin 710 can be said to be enough to satisfy users in the mid-range smartphone segment.
Battery life improved significantly compared to the previous generation
The Honor 8X has a 3,750 mAh battery, does not support fast charging. The included 5V / 2A charger takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes to fully charge, in which the first 30 minutes charge about 30% of the battery and 1 hour of charging is 60%. The absence of fast charging and USB Type C charging port is a pity on this product.
However, the battery life of the device is quite good, especially with two activities to watch movies and surf the web. Compared to the old Honor 7X, the new Honor 8X has significantly improved usage, on par with the recently rated mid-range smartphones like the Oppo F9 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. This result shows that battery is a factor that users can rest assured on the Honor 8X.

Camera with many features, colors close to reality, average night photography
The Honor 8X uses a back-facing dual camera cluster with a 20MP main camera and a 2MP secondary camera to capture the image depth that supports the capture of the font. The main camera has an f / 1.8, supports phase focus and has a bright flash. At the front, it has a 16MP camera with f / 2.0 and only supports fixed focus.
The camera has a familiar interface on recent Huawei / Honor devices. Users switch between modes by sliding across the screen. In particular, Honor phones have many shooting modes. In addition to the usual modes, the company has introduced many new shooting modes that young people will enjoy such as light painting (exposure), aperture adjustment, AR lens, food shooting, scanning documents, funny stickers …
AI mode on camera can identify 22 scenes to automatically adjust the corresponding image parameters. Features can turn on and off before and after shooting. Turning off the AI mode is also quite convenient, just tap once on the camera interface. In AI mode, photos are often pushed in color and contrast slightly compared to normal mode. However, AI images are only 12MP resolution, not 20MP images like other modes.
It also has night mode in the same manner as Google night mode on Pixel phones or night mode on the recent Oppo R17 Pro. In night mode, the machine will multiplex multiple images at different exposures to create the final, brighter, more detailed, more colorful image and handle well the light sources if taken in the common sense. However, the limitation of night mode is the slow processing speed, usually 3-5 seconds, so it is easy to shake hands and if there are moving objects in the image will be blurred.
In terms of image quality, the Honor 8X shows true color, brightness and contrast, but the detail is not high. AI images improve slightly on the freshness and balance between the dark areas in the image but the detail is reduced. The resolution of images in AI mode is only 12MP, not 20MP as in normal photos.
When the photosynthesis was taken, the color standard remained well but the noise was very pronounced. Neither AI mode will save the noise problem other than improving the brightness of the image. As mentioned above, the night mode will improve the overall low-light image quality but this mode exposes it for quite a long time, up to 5 seconds, so it requires shooting to be sure and in the picture there are no subjects move.
The Honor 8X has a dual camera, so it has a screen capture mode, which is very popular on today’s phones. The photo deletes the 8MP resolution font. Although only 2MP secondary camera, but quite surprising, the image quality is quite good. Photos in true color, many details and subject edges are erased relatively naturally and smoothly. However, images with subjects too close to the background are not well separated.
This phone has a 16MP front camera, only fixed focus. It also has a beauty mode with a ladder that adjusts 10 levels and removes fonts. Even, the mode of removing fonts is the default mode of the front camera. When switching from the following camra to the front camera, the device will automatically turn on the font removal mode (called the virtualization mode by the company). Photos from cameras have many details and colors also follow natural orientation like the rear camera. However, the point to note in this camera is not to allow focus customization, so the subject of photography must be at a reasonable distance close to the camera to ensure the definition, and if it is far away, it will be blurry.
Mid-range is currently the most fiercely competitive segment with the participation of almost all phone manufacturers. However, this is also the segment that requires buyers to suffer the most because there is no truly comprehensive product. Each product has a number of points that the manufacturer pays attention to. For example, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) has just got a good battery and good performance but the plastic body and the average camera; while the 2018 Galaxy A7 impresses with the cluster of 3 rear cameras and beautiful AMOLED screens, but the performance is much lower than the same range; Or the Oppo F9 has a camera, performance and battery are all good but only plastic body design.
Compared to the same price range, the Honor 8X has the advantage of beautiful design with metal / glass material, agile performance, good battery life, multi-function software, bright enough camera for color Honest and pretty selfie. However, this product has some noticeable drawbacks: the screen has a slightly pale color, lack of bright camera shooting, the battery does not support fast charging and still only uses the old micro-USB port.
