DESIGN AND FINISHING
Sennheiser IE 400 PRO has an almost all-original design from IE 40 PRO, a minimalist design and has no minus points. The biggest difference on these two headsets is only on the connector part. Sennheiser IE 400 PRO’s housing still uses plastic material even in the more advanced segment. Although this material looks inferior and a bit cheap, it keeps the weight of the ears very light as well as optimizes comfort for long-term wear, especially for professional use subjects like Producer or Artist perform on stage.
On a closer look, we will notice a few positive improvements of IE 400 PRO when compared to IE 40 PRO. The muffler on Sennheiser IE 400 PRO now has a mesh screen instead of the temporary foam on IE 40 PRO. Of course they have to and I think it would be sloppy if they forgot this little detail. Sennheiser IE 400 PRO features only a 7mm diameter dynamic driver utilizing its proprietary TrueRespone technology. This is the result of many years of hard research and development of products. Because only one driver is used, the interference in the frequency and phase transfer domain when using multiple drivers is minimized. A magnet system with 3 air vents effectively reduces distortion. 2 sound absorption chambers minimize unwanted resonance peaks. The result is a dynamic driver, even though the high sound pressure levels retain the clean, detailed sound quality and no distortion. EXPERIENCE MEASUREING
Perfect fit, just like the feeling of wearing IE 40 PRO. The housing is thin, small and light, which is very comfortable on the ear. Even if you wear this headset and sleep, it is not a problem (However, this is not recommended because it can greatly affect your hearing)
Soundproof level is <26dB, which means that the Sennheiser IE 400 PRO will be perfect for indoor use, but when you go on the road, there will still be sound inside the ears. SOUND QUALITY
The overall sound is once again quite similar to IE 40 PRO. For those who are new to listening, letting them listen to the same track, they probably will not distinguish between Sennheiser IE 400 PRO and IE 40 PRO. With the PRO Series, Sennheiser is aiming for what they call accurate sound instead of neutral sound. This is a type of sound with a little added bass range for more natural sound and a little hit on the treble strip for this sound range to expand and more fresh.
We have a headset with a little push on the bass strip, the mid strip doesn’t progress like ATH, it’s in a fitting, uncompressed position. The high range has a very good opening and shows the sharpness of detail needed.
Soundstage:
The soundstage is quite nice and wide. It stretches from left to right and if you’re a person who likes a wide soundstage, the Sennheiser IE 400 PRO will not disappoint you. The stage space is not so high that it tends to be just like the sound in a studio. The ability to recreate the position of the instrument in a good space. They are never too technical to lose their music thanks to the emphasis on the bass range that all elements are kept in equilibrium.
Bass:
Bass range recreated by Sennheiser IE 400 PRO is bouncing and powerful. If you listen to tracks with lots of bass, you will feel all the fun in this sound range according to the artist’s wishes. Features that make up the backbone of the entire PRO Series. Bass is powerful but will come with control and separation. The amount of sub-bass will be a little less than mid-bass. Bass beat quite tightly and neatly, most of them kept in the threshold of not being encroached to the mid range. The mid-bass strip has a good bounce, the type will pull the tail a bit before disappearing. Bass does not have the speed of response as fast as the BA drivers. The timbre and nature of bass instruments is perfectly reproduced.
Mids:
The mid range is neither pushed nor pulled back like V-Shape sound. The slight emphasis on the bass range and a bit of boost in the treble range make this range quite unique. The mid range is not boosted by the W sound, it is at its original position. The singer’s voice does not emerge from the orchestra but rather on par. There is a certain airiness in this range that makes it quite elegant and easy to hear. The mid range is very natural and clear. The separation of instruments is also very convincing and commendable.
Treble:
The treble band has a good opening that surpasses the 10kHz threshold unlike many IEMs I’ve heard. Each phase touches the drum edge clearly and accurately. Tonal sound characterized by emphasis on the treble strip. This type of sound is not too bright, nor can it be called smooth. The result is a very clear treble with crisp and fresh sound. By the very good extend of the treble, the resonant are created very impressively. If you listen to music that uses a lot of reverberation effects like Pink Floyd or Chemical Brothers, both Sennheiser IE 400 PRO and Sennheiser IE 500 PRO will bring back the sound you remember.
COMPARISON WITH Sennheiser IE 40 PRO
As I said before, the characteristic timbre of the two headsets is very similar. Sennheiser IE 400 PRO gives slightly higher volume when listening at the same source as Sennheiser IE 40 PRO. The tight, well-tuned bass range of the Sennheiser IE 400 PRO is better, it also minimizes the energy redundancy in sub-bass. Sennheiser IE 400 PRO reproduces bass more accurately, speed is also a bit more. The mid range is clearer, the vocals are more detailed and accurate reproduction when compared to the Sennheiser IE 40 PRO. The treble strip on the Sennheiser IE 40 PRO is sharper and rougher.
You can completely say that Sennheiser IE 400 PRO is a direct upgrade of Sennheiser IE 40 PRO, just like the way Sennheiser IE 500 PRO became an upgrade of Sennheiser IE 400 PRO.
