amazon Pentax K-S2 reviews
Design style
The first compliment when looking at the K-S2 Pentax is the design of “flashy” of the machine. Not successful with the K-S1 model last year, Ricoh has learned from the Pentax K-S2. The biggest change was the removal of the leds on the strings compared to the predecessor model. In contrast, the Pentax K-S2 has a circular lanyard around the shutter button, a Wi-Fi button, and a rear control keypad. These circles will light up, change the color to indicate on-off status and current mode. The body is still mixed in many colors but this time it is easier to accept. The version mentioned in this article is black, dark black are made of hard plastic, the front is a bit greyish and uses special material with high grip. The area around the keys and the top control wheel is machined with scratch-resistant metal. In general, the new look looks better and more beautiful … better than the previous Pentax K-S1 a lot.
The structure of the machine is also better, the most commendable point is that the grip is enlarged and more inward. Thanks to that, the button is also taken away from the front a little more. This button is located on the curved edge of the slit and slightly tilted forward about 10 degrees from the horizontal plane. The position is very convenient for the operator to press, the feeling of not being crumbled compared to the usual square.
The Pentax K-S2 is also the first Pentax camera to have a rotating flip screen. This design offers the ability to use a versatile camera for shooting from various angles, including self-shots. In general, there is no point worthy of K-S2 design.
Experience
In terms of configuration, the Pentax K-S2 uses a 20MP APS-C CMOS Sensor. This sensor is supported anti-vibration (placed in the body). The image processor is equipped as PRIME M II, the focus system consists of 11 points including 9 cross-type points. This is a pity for the K-S2 Pentax because there is no improvement over the Pentax K-S1. ISO range of machine from 100 to 51,200. Mechanical and electronic shutter, 1 / 6.000s maximum shooting speed, 5.5 fps continuous shooting capability.
With the above parameters, it can be said that the configuration of Pentax K-S2 is not strong. However, that does not come to the conclusion about its performance and image quality.
Unlike most DSLRs from other manufacturers, the Pentax camera allows users to edit digital photos both before and after the shoot. Even some image editing items that can only be made with dedicated post-production software are now available on Pentax K-S2.

Before shooting, K-S2 has up to 11 custom images to choose from. Among them, notably the Reversal Film, Cross Processing, produces image processing that simulates filmmaking methods from ancient times. In addition, there are 9 filters digital filter (Digital Filter), if the combination of them with the image customization, the results will be very unique, interesting. This feature set can make the owner of another brand camera “desire”. In addition, the Clarity Enhancement feature also works great, it gives the image a more detailed and blurry image, especially useful when shooting landscapes.
Particularly for those who do not want to spend too much time selecting features, filter effects and image options, they can switch to SCN shooting mode. K-S2 has 19 contexts, much more than SCNs of other companies and can be said to be very complete. From basic backgrounds such as portraits, landscapes, macros, fast-paced action to valuable additions such as shooting snow, children, animals, food …
It has the advantage of a versatile swivel screen, high angle, low angle or self-sharp shooting. Connectivity Wi-Fi, NFC for remote camera control, convenient photo sharing. Incorporated bright spotlight, effective night vision. The harmless weathe-seal, outdoor wind, dust at the site does not affect the camera.
The K-S2 also has disadvantages such as slow-focus system, which produces noise with telephoto zoom lenses. Poor video recording capabilities, Full HD framerate resolution only reached a maximum of 30p.

Performance
Autofocus System
The K-S2 features an 11-point SAFOX X autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors. While not as advanced as the autofocus systems found in some higher-end DSLRs, it performs reliably in most situations. The autofocus is quick and accurate in good lighting conditions, but it can struggle in low light. The inclusion of focus peaking in live view mode is a helpful addition for manual focusing, particularly in macro and low-light scenarios.
Burst Shooting
With a continuous shooting speed of 5.4 frames per second, the K-S2 is capable of capturing fast-moving subjects with relative ease. This makes it suitable for sports and wildlife photography, though the buffer depth may be limiting for extended bursts. The camera can shoot up to 30 JPEGs or 8 RAW files in a single burst before the buffer fills up.
Image Stabilization
The K-S2 incorporates Pentax’s proprietary sensor-shift Shake Reduction (SR) system, which provides up to 3.5 stops of stabilization. This is beneficial for handheld shooting, particularly in low light or when using telephoto lenses. The SR system works effectively to reduce blur caused by camera shake, resulting in sharper images.
Features
Articulating LCD Screen
The K-S2 is equipped with a 3-inch, 921k-dot vari-angle LCD screen. The fully articulating design allows for flexible shooting angles, making it easier to compose shots from high or low perspectives. The screen is bright and offers good visibility even in direct sunlight, though it is not a touchscreen.
Viewfinder
The optical viewfinder provides 100% field of view coverage, which is a notable advantage over many entry-level and mid-range DSLRs that offer only 95% coverage. The viewfinder is bright and clear, making it easy to compose shots accurately.
Wi-Fi and NFC Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC make it convenient to transfer images to a smartphone or tablet for sharing. The accompanying Image Sync app allows for remote control of the camera, providing options to adjust settings, view live images, and trigger the shutter from a distance. This is particularly useful for group shots and long-exposure photography.
In-Camera HDR and Interval Shooting
The K-S2 offers a range of creative features, including in-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) and interval shooting. The HDR mode combines multiple exposures to create a single image with enhanced dynamic range, which is ideal for high-contrast scenes. The interval shooting function allows for time-lapse photography, with the option to create a time-lapse movie directly in-camera.
Customization and User Interface
Pentax is known for offering extensive customization options, and the K-S2 is no different. The camera’s user interface is intuitive, with a well-organized menu system. The customizable function buttons and control dials allow photographers to tailor the camera’s operation to their preferences, enhancing the overall shooting experience.
Battery Life
The K-S2 uses a D-LI109 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which provides a decent battery life of approximately 410 shots per charge (CIPA standard). While not exceptional, this is adequate for a day of moderate shooting. For extended use, carrying a spare battery is recommended.
Comparison with Competitors
Nikon D5500
The Nikon D5500 is a direct competitor to the Pentax K-S2, offering a similar feature set and price point. The D5500 has a slightly higher resolution 24.2-megapixel sensor and an articulating touchscreen. However, it lacks the weather-sealing and sensor-shift image stabilization found in the K-S2. The D5500’s autofocus system is also more advanced, with 39 focus points compared to the K-S2’s 11. Overall, the choice between the two will depend on individual priorities, such as weather resistance and in-body stabilization versus autofocus performance and touchscreen functionality.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D)
The Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D) is another mid-range DSLR that competes with the K-S2. It features a 24.2-megapixel sensor and a 19-point autofocus system. The T6i also has a fully articulating touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi. While the T6i offers good image quality and a user-friendly interface, it lacks the weather-sealing and in-body stabilization of the K-S2. The K-S2’s superior build quality and robust feature set make it a more attractive option for photographers who need a durable and versatile camera.
Sony Alpha A6000
The Sony Alpha A6000 is a popular mirrorless camera that rivals the K-S2 in terms of image quality and performance. It features a 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, a fast hybrid autofocus system with 179 phase-detection points, and continuous shooting at 11 frames per second. The A6000 is also more compact and lightweight than the K-S2. However, it lacks the weather-sealing and optical viewfinder of the K-S2. The choice between the two will come down to personal preference regarding form factor, viewfinder type, and the importance of weather resistance.
Practical Use Cases
Landscape Photography
The K-S2’s weather-sealing, excellent dynamic range, and high-resolution sensor make it well-suited for landscape photography. The ability to withstand harsh conditions allows photographers to shoot in challenging environments, while the detailed image output ensures that the natural beauty of the scene is captured faithfully.
Portrait Photography
With its accurate color reproduction, sharp image quality, and reliable autofocus, the K-S2 performs admirably in portrait photography. The customizable settings and controls enable photographers to fine-tune the camera to achieve the desired look and feel for their portraits.
Wildlife and Sports Photography
The K-S2’s continuous shooting speed of 5.4 frames per second and reliable autofocus system make it a viable option for capturing fast-moving subjects. While not as fast as some high-end cameras, it is capable of handling moderate action photography. The weather-sealing adds an extra layer of protection for outdoor shoots in unpredictable conditions.
Travel and Street Photography
The compact and rugged design of the K-S2 makes it an excellent companion for travel and street photography. The articulating screen and built-in Wi-Fi enhance its versatility, allowing for creative compositions and easy sharing of images. The camera’s discreet appearance and quiet operation are also beneficial for candid street photography.
Astrophotography
The K-S2’s low-light performance, high ISO capability, and long exposure settings make it suitable for astrophotography. The in-camera intervalometer is particularly useful for capturing time-lapse sequences of the night sky. The camera’s ability to handle noise effectively at higher ISOs ensures that stars and celestial objects are rendered clearly.
