Narrative and Story
Plot Overview
The story of Commander Shepard in “Mass Effect 2” picks up from the closure of “Mass Effect.” After the first game’s events, the Illusive Man, the mysterious head of the Cerberus organization, resurrects Shepard. An entirely new enigmatic threat arises: the Reapers. Unknown to all, the Reapers seek to wipe out any advanced civilization standing in their way. As Commander Shepard, players must now round up a whole new set of allies and set off to investigate dangerous missions to uncover the truth behind the Reapers and prevent their impending destruction.
The storytelling of “Mass Effect 2” is heavily addicting, with a storyline filled with epic scales of space opera and deeply personal character arcs. These new characters complete the integration of the game story into the new story; each new addition presents a fully fleshed-out history and motivations. The interaction between the players and the narrative structure during these activities heavily influences the game story, leading to multiple endings, shifting character relations, and putting replayability into the mix and depth into the whole experience.
Character Development
Character development stands out in “Mass Effect 2.” Players recruit and build relationships among many characters with personalities, backgrounds, and stories all of their own. The conversations that Commander Shepard shares with these characters are rich and full of meaning, which often lead to important consequences in the narrative.
Main ones include Garrus Vakarian, the turian sniper with a sense of justice; Tali’Zorah nar Rayya, the quarian engineer with a tragic past; and Miranda Lawson, the ruthless Cerberus operative with an agenda of her own. The intimate stories and interactions with these characters become the fabric of the story-lending emotional weight and complexity to the whole narrative.
These character moments were enhanced in the Legendary Edition with more advanced graphics and voice acting, making them feel even more immersive and emotional. Better model fidelity and animation contributed to giving a more human and, thus, engaging portrayal of the character cast.
Gameplay Mechanics
Core Gameplay
Maintaining core gameplay of the original that made it a success, some refinements and extensions were added to it during publication of “Mass Effect 2.” In the tactical combat and a decision-making blend of third-person shooting, role-playing, and exploration are present.
Optimized for combat, “Mass Effect 2” is harsher than its predecessor. Shooting itself has become smoother, and the cover system is more intuitive, permitting a precision-oriented approach towards engaging enemies and building your strategy. It gives players a wide array of weapons and abilities, each of which are customizable and upgradeable so players will have the means to suit their combat style.
Exploration and Missions
Exploration efforts in the “Mass Effect 2” game encompass missions performed on foot with most space travel. It allows players to visit several planets and various locations, having unique environments and challenges, types of missions being the storyline missions, side missions, and loyalty missions from squad members.
One of the most interesting facets is undoubtedly the loyalty missions; not only do they allow players to invest further into the backgrounds of their crew, but by completing such missions, players also tighten their bond with the specific character and even influence certain changes in-game. These missions add dimension and background context to the characters, which becomes part of the entire adoption experience.
Ship Management and Resources
The Normandy is characterized here as Commander Shepard’s own spaceship. This is a feature in the game wherein players manage the ship, may gather information by hanging out with the crew members, and even come up with missions all from the different areas of the Normandy. To top it all, there is an upgrade system for the ship which, players will be able to improve and unlock new features from.
Another fundamental aspect of “Mass Effect 2” is resource management. Players are expected to collect resources to upgrade weapons, armor, and ships. The game’s strategic side is here; with limited resources, players should decide which upgrades are a priority.
Visual and Audio Design
Graphics and Art Style
One of the most remarkable graphics overhauls lives in the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect 2, with all-new textures and models for characters and enhanced environmental detail. The art style in the game still holds close to its original design – a typical future technology with alien landscapes.
The extra graphics improve the detail and realism of the environment and characters in the game. These graphics improve the immersion level, allowing players to view all the intricate designs in the various locations and characters in the game.
And, of course, every player remembers the soundtrack of “Mass Effect 2.” All the music, composed by Jack Wall, just makes everything better in terms of the atmosphere. The main score successfully combines orchestral pieces with electronic ones to give the music a rich and dynamic soundscape.
Sound effects execute, too, meaning more ordinary recordings for weapons, abilities, and interactions with the environment realize voice acting done by a star cast whose performance renders the entire story more believable. Improved audio quality in the Legendary edition also added to the overall experience by polishing sound even better and giving a more immersive soundscape.
Mass Effect 2 (2010) at the time of its release did the unthinkable: overcome the giant shadow of Mass Effect 1 with an equally thrilling storyline, colorful new characters, and huge improvements significant in combat and movement.
Mass Effect 2 is the perfect sequel of a very solid foundation, so what will it take to remake Mass Effect?
From the graphical changes to the gameplay, and the DLC that the writer has not had the opportunity to experience before, Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition is truly the most complete player experience!
So how did BioWare remake Mass Effect 2?
No matter how many improvements BioWare adds to the Legendary Edition, the immediate jump through Mass Effect 2 makes season one look stale and clunky.
The combat and movement mechanics now look more like a top-notch third-person shooter from the 2010s, as Commander Shepard can jump out of cover, sprint, and maneuver the gun more smoothly with The precise loading and aiming mechanisms, as well as the squad member command screen, are also very smooth and easy to use.
These mechanics combine with an expanded arsenal of weapons and customizations, as well as teammates with exciting skill sets.
The writer himself likes the mysterious Kasumi girl with a beautiful and useful set of “flash” abilities.
The Legendary Edition comes with all of the game’s original DLC, so the gameplay experience is truly the most complete!
Now, the player not only transforms into the “cool” cosmic commander in the cutscenes but also fights as a legendary cosmic warrior.
The obvious improvements in gameplay from part one to part two make the writer appreciate the bold steps that the BioWare team has taken from 2011 to here.
The writer himself did not realize the changes in this remake compared to the original, because my memory of Mass Effect 2 is that the computer struggled to keep the game above 30fps at the resolution of 720p.
So now fighting smoothly at 4k and 60fps, the writer is transformed into a super-soldier brought back from the dead by Cerberus, feeling better than ever!
Wait… death?
If some players for some reason want to skip Mass Effect 1, in part two, the game will let players understand what happened in part one with a short comic strip.
And then, Commander Shepard… dead!
That’s right, the Normandy was attacked by a mysterious force, and Shepard, in an attempt to save the Joker, was thrown into space and… suffocated.
Although the writer knew in advance what had happened, it was heartbreaking to see such a familiar and iconic character as Shepard die.
And that’s the perfect start of the story Mass Effect 2 tells, and as always, Shepard is at the center!
Cerberus brings Shepard back from the dead so he (or her) can help the organization investigate and stop a new danger called The Collector – a mysterious alien race that attacked Normandy and killed Shepard, as well responsible for the disappearance of a series of human settlements.
But Shepard is not alone, accompanying him are now Tali’Zorah, Miranda, and Zaeed, .. each with a very own personality and a very interesting story for players to discover.
As with the first season, relationships with some characters can be affected by the “good” – “bad” stats of Commander Shepard and Renegade, but it’s more obvious now, because of the side-leaning Either way can lead to a bunch of new interactions from that character!
As for who and how specifically, you will experience it yourself!
Mass Effect 2’s graphical changes in the Legendary Edition, like the first, are honing and removing outdated graphics techniques.
The gray layer that made every detail of the original look hazy has been removed, in favor of contrasting colors and more modern lighting mechanisms that make the world of Mass Effect 2 so it’s alive.
Although the mechanics of driving around the vast planets have been removed and replaced by exploration mechanics… less annoying, that doesn’t mean Shepard won’t get to go to beautiful places!
From the modern cities of Illium to the mysterious space base of the Collectors, the new locations Shepard visits in the second part of the Legendary Edition are sure to wow players both new and old!
