Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor (U3419W) has an ultra-wide display and includes a USB Type-C port that can charge the laptop, even while the screen displays content via the same connection. It’s a good alternative to split-screen use and a viable alternative to a dual-monitor setup. In our tests, the display displayed accurate colors while covering the full sRGB gamut. It lacks the kinds of game-focused features we saw on our recent choice pick, the curved Asus ProArt PA34VC, such as AMD FreeSync adaptive sync technology and refresh rates higher than normal, and it does not support HDR. But those features are beyond the bottom line: This model is a good choice for professionals looking for a widescreen business monitor with good color handling.

A variety of ports

The U3419W is an upgrade from Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor (U3417W), the main difference being the addition of a USB Type-C port. That’s a feature many of Dell’s new monitors and some monitors from other manufacturers are incorporating.

The main feature of the U3419W is a 34-inch display (measured diagonally) with a native UWQHD resolution (3,440 x 1,440 pixels) that operates in an ultra-wide aspect ratio of 21:9. At 110 pixels per inch (PPI) maximum pixel density, this is, in fact, equal to that of the Asus PA34VC. That display is also IPS, with exactly the same resolution and aspect ratio as this one. This pixel density is definitely lower than that of 4K monitors like the ViewSonic VP2785-4K (with a 163ppi display) but more than enough for crystal-clear images.

Dell does not provide an amount of curvature for the U3419W. For sure, though, it attempts to offer a super-wide and immersive super-wide view that may be viewed in any direction at 178 degrees, both in landscape and portrait modes, typical of IPS displays.

The U3419W also has multiple ports. In addition to the USB-C port, I mentioned above includes two HDMI 2.0 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.2 input, two USB 3.0 upstream ports, and four USB 3 downstream ports (two on the bottom, two on the side).

All USBs can be used to charge devices. As USB-C has a power delivery of up to 90 watts, therefore, can do high-speed charging, such as laptops (while, as mentioned, it also allows data transfer via cable). In contrast, the Asus PA34VC has fewer USB 3.0 ports, but it adds a second USB-C port.

Solid frame, but it needs a Joystick.

The display has a narrow bezel, about 0.6 cm wide all around. Including the stand, the U3419W measures 41.6 x 81 x 22.6 cm (HWD), with the height extending to 53 cm when the stand is fully raised. Together, the monitor and stand weigh 8.2 kg.

And in this way, you can tilt it anything between 5 degrees downwards and 21 upwards while rotating it to the left and right of the surface some 30 degrees using the rotator disc at the bottom. The U3419W lacks any pan control (which would move the display between landscape and portrait modes), not really unexpected from an ultrawide but something that would have been welcomed by photographers.

Dell monitors are almost always accompanied by poor and confusing physical control layouts; in this case, there are five buttons just carved on the bottom-right of the screen, which are awkward to use and certainly aren’t as intuitive as these mini-joystick-like menu controllers creeping out on a good number of (most) gaming monitors.

That button they put at the farthest right controls power, just adjacent to it is a button that enters the main menu. The remaining buttons let you navigate the menu system and make selections for brightness, contrast, input sources, and many other settings. There are also six preset Picture modes you can switch between: Standard, Movie, Game, Color Temperature, Custom Color, and ComfortView.

Shaping the sRGB space

Being an IPS monitor, U3419W cherishes color accuracy among its selling points. Dell claims this monitor to be factory calibrated to 99% of sRGB, and it actually went beyond Dell’s claims that I measured 100% coverage.

U3419W luminosity (brightness per unit area) is rated at 300 candelas per meter squared (nits), which I found to be a healthy 332 nits. The contrast ratio, which I measured at 1,142:1, is slightly better than the rated 1,000:1.

There are a few features of the U3419W that an elite gamer might crave. The display is 60Hz in terms of refresh rate and does not have adaptive sync technology, or HDR capabilities. And yet, I feel that in reality light gaming should do just fine based on our experiences with playing a few games and benchmarking them: Final Fantasy XV ran fairly smoothly and without any major issues in 1440p during benchmark playback.

Video playback looks good too, with reasonably bright and realistic colors, although with such a widescreen, any movie or clip at a more normal resolution will show up as black bars at both sides.

A pair of 2-watt speakers are built into the U3419W. They have a decent, if slightly soft, sound. A 3.5mm audio-out is available if you want to use headphones or connect to powered external speakers.

Dell backs the U3419W with a three-year warranty, which is the standard length among monitors of this class.

The displays are for professional business use.

You want everything laid out on a giant spreadsheet, browsing through multiple documents side by side, or just editing videos or photos, so it must be capable of providing ample workspace with its 34-inch ultra-wide display. While it’s somewhat decent for movie watching and casual gaming, it lacks HDR, gaming features like high refresh rates, and adaptive sync-ing. It lacks versatility when compared to Asus PA34VC, a professional display with a very slight advantage when it comes to gaming features. But not everyone wants or needs those features; some call it a productivity monitor. As an alternative to dual monitors, the U3419W works perfectly well as a premier business-grade monitor with good color accuracy.
