Review FiiO BTR3K headphone amp/DAC – Upgrade Dual DAC, add 2.5 Balance port.
Today the name Fiio has global coverage, has a large number of fans using it. Fiio products are still strong in headphone DAC/AMP FiiO with many models BTR1K, BTR3, Q1 gen 2, etc., all of the good quality at affordable price.
The company has released the Fiio BTR3K headphone amp/DAC model in this product upgrade, replacing the BTR3 with major hardware improvements.
Unboxing
Here, I will open the box with you and quickly evaluate this BLUETOOTH DAC/AMP FiiO BTR3K. Let’s see if the above improvements make the sound and experience much better with the same price.
In terms of external packaging, BTR3 vs. BTR3K is no different from the white box background, highlighting the BTR3K black DAC/AMP.
About design
FiiO BTR3K BLUETOOTH DAC / AMP remains the same and is not much different from the previous BTR3 elder. Outside the glossy plastic part, the body is made from CNC aluminum alloy with a 2.5D glass layer, bringing new technology design trends like high-end smartphones on the market today. The clean lines are definitive, very comfortable in hand.
Hardware configuration
BLUETOOTH DAC/AMP FiiO BTR3K is equipped with an additional 2.5mm balance output port to help the device expand the connection more versatile.
The device is equipped with AKM’s Dual DAC 2 chip AK4377A, increasing more than 50% of the output power compared to the BTR3, so the sound is fuller and richer.
The Clock counter has also been upgraded and improved with two chips running at 22.5792MHz/24.576MHz to help increase the stability of the audio connection.
FiiO BTR3K uses a Qualcomm CSR8675 Bluetooth processor chip to transmit up to 24bit audio for an enjoyable music experience.
Technology
DAC/AMP FiiO BTR3K uses Bluetooth 5.0 technology to support AAC/SBC/aptX/aptX LL/aptX HD/ LDAC codec standard for fast, stable connection, almost no latency. So we can watch movies, play games with perfect synchronization between picture and sound if BTR3K does better than BTR3, which only meets Bluetooth 4.0 standards.
BLUETOOTH DAC/AMP FiiO BTR3K supports listening to many different music formats with distinguishing RGB LED colors such as SBC (green), AAC (blue), aptX (purple), aptX LL (yellow), aptX HD (white).
In addition to being a Bluetooth receiver, FiiO BTR3K also supports users to connect to devices such as PCs and laptops via USB-DAC to expand device connectivity.
The battery life of BTR3K remains 11 hours with only 1.5 hours of charging time.
Talk mic
On the FiiO BTR3K device, FiiO is equipped with Qualcomm’s cVc 8.0 omnidirectional microphone capable of canceling noise in many different noisy environments but still keeping clarity.
Regarding control, the device includes a control key cluster; you can use the microphone and the keys on the normal headset.
The BTR3K version can simultaneously support the simultaneous pairing of up to 2 Bluetooth devices, which is very convenient for people who use multiple devices.
Adjustable volume on both music player and BTR3K. In addition, you can use the intelligent virtual assistant on many different operating systems.
Sound quality
Back to familiar test tracks such as Alone by Alan Walker, Hello by Adele, Hotel California, My heart will go on with lossless FLAC file quality.
Using Apple iPhone 6S and Apple Macbook Pro through Beyerdynamic Beat Byrd headphones as a source, testing music after more than one week of experience:
With the upgrade of the Dual DAC chip AK4377A, the amplification capacity is doubled. Bass quality is somewhat solid, neater, and more coherent in the mid-bass range, so EDM and Pop songs sound quieter and more soulful.
The low bass range has depth, so the bass drums or rock drums have good tension and clarity.
The mid-range sounds okay for both men and women, but not great. The sound is somewhat but a bit dry, the running time will improve significantly, the mid-range will be softer.
The bright, fresh soprano Celine Dion Treble contributes to the very tinkling treble range. The feeling is very luxurious; both humming and nostalgia sound very fresh.
In terms of imaging, I feel that the Fiio BTR3K, BTR1K, or BTR3 series all have a common point about the space in the middle, close to the listener’s ear area.
Summary
The overall sound quality of the Fiio BTR3K has a marked improvement over the BTR3 in the bass vs. mid-frequency range. Listeners will feel the freshness in the mid-range vs. the certainty in the bass range.
