amazon HDD WD Red reviews
WD Red NAS Hard Drive
First I will review the current product line of WD:
– WD Black: High speed than regular HDD, quality and good durability (synonymous with high prices).
– WD Green: Mainly serving the storage needs, speed is not fast, but power saving, low price. The capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB.
– WD Blue: Located between the Black and Green, serving ordinary users to install a combination of operating system, applications and storage. Blue drive only 250GB, 500 GB and 1 TB.
– WD RE: Speed, endurance, better than the Black (and higher price).
Designed to cater to the NAS storage system, Red is equipped with impressive technical features: the ability to operate 24/7, temperature resistant, vibration resistant, error correction algorithms. Unfortunately, these features are difficult to verify in a short time, so in our eyes can only trust the manufacturer.
Product line with Red sold capacities 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB. All are using SATA 6 Gbps interface and 64 MB cache. Looking at the specs, it seems Red owns and persistence of RE and energy efficient Green.
WD does not give information about MTBF (average life) of Green, but there is news that that figure is about 750,000 hours. RE4-GP and for Red, MTBF respectively 1,200,000 and 1,000,000 hour. Green drive 300,000 cycle load/unload, RE4-GP while and Red can withstand double. In addition, Red can operate when the temperature reached 70 degrees Celsius – taller than any other product of WD with good vibration resistance. Power consumption is also the lowest of Red: 3.7 – 4.4 W when active; 3.2 – 4.1 W when idle and 0.6 W when sleep.
In my hand is a 1 TB version of the product. Like other 1 TB drives, real capacity drive is just 931 GB.

The benchmark software
The first test is Crystal DiskMark as usual. This software measured read speed – recording of drives up to 160.2 to 157.0 MB / s. This is a very high speed in the world of HDD.
ATTO Disk Benchmark results noted equivalence, even longer reach read speeds of 163 MB / s.
One other popular software HD Tune Pro measured average read speed of 116.2 MB is Red 1 TB / s and an access time of 20.5 ms. HD Tune Pro, this is not a bad result.
HD Tune Pro is still, switch to contents File Benchmark. From 32 KB or more capacity, speed reading – recorded stable for about 150-140 MB/s reading speed even up to 175 MB/s when the file size grows.
Both 2 mode Long Bench and Quick Bench of HD Tach recorded read speed of drive WD Red 1 TB around 122.8 MB/s.
Actual speeds
Now I turn to measure time data replication. I test the 1 file ISO 6.37 GB and 1 folder 3.61 Gb containing 690 JPEG image. Note the drive speed may vary depending on operating systems, applications installed and used capacity should the following results are for reference.
– Copy the ISO file from Kingston HyperX SSD into WD Red 1 TB takes 34 seconds, equivalent speed 191.8 MB / s.
– Copy the folders from Kingston HyperX SSD to WD Red 1 TB takes 21 seconds, equivalent speed 176.0 MB / s.
– Copy ISO files from WD Red 1 TB to Kingston HyperX SSD took 43 seconds, the equivalent speed of 151.7 MB / s.
– Copy the folder from WD Red 1 TB to Kingston HyperX SSD took 38 seconds, the equivalent speed of 97.3 MB / s.
Temperature using Red 1 TB is also quite good. In terms of room temperature 31 degrees C, the hard drive (put together one tray, fanless) temperatures as follows:
– Red 1 TB drive: 42 degrees C.
– Green 2 TB drive: 44 degrees C.
– Black 500 GB drive: 47 degrees C.
Conclude
WD Red is the first hard drive manufacturer dedicated to the NAS. Designed to work in environments 24/7 data access, high temperature (due to the small case and there is no cooling fan), certainly no doubt about the durability of the Red. Not only that, vibration is also almost completely limited. Even if the data is copied, I do not feel the vibrations when placed his hand on the back of the drive. The speed of the drive also is high compared with many other HDD, reaching up to 160 MB / s. Above all, with so many advantages, the power consumption remains the lowest of the WD Red family: just 3.7 – 4.4 W when active; 3.2 -> 4.1 W when idle and 0.6 W when sleep.
Compared with previous products of WD, Red faster Blue, more durable Green, less heat and less electricity than Black. Therefore, Red proved to be a worthwhile product not only for NAS that even normal computer users should not ignore. Especially if you have a need to access the data often do torrent seeder, graphic design, HTPC … then Red is the worthy replacement for Green in your system. Even with ordinary users, if you feel not satisfied with the pace of Black and Blue while RE too expensive, you can also come to mind Red.
